Forlorn (2002)

Want a quick zombie fix? Then feast your rotting eyes on
Forlorn. For fifteen minutes you'll be treated to
some good, wholesome zombie fun. A massive epidemic has
broken out. We don't know how it happened or how widespread
it is. All we know is that the cities and populated areas
are places that you do not want to venture into. The film
follows two young travelers as they are attempting to get
as far away from the outbreak as possible.
I'd love to see this movie stretched to full-length. These
15 minutes impressed me more than some of the horrible full-length
zombie flicks that I've seen. Dare I say that I would rather
watch Forlorn 6 times in a row than have to sit through
some of the zombie movies that I've seen in my day.
Director Derek Kopet's zombie film research really paid
off, and I think he did a masterful job with the subject
matter. He was able to really capture the feeling of isolation
and of being alone out there in a messed up world. The camera
work was excellent and there were quite a few really creative
and impressive shots. The opening sequence reminds me a
lot of the opening to Night Of The Living Dead. It
really worked in NOTLD and it really works here again
in Forlorn. Kopet's vision is his own though, and
adds the radio in the background giving us some set-up to
what's going on.
Special effects are limited to the zombie makeup and a zombie bite, and it's all done well.
It's not the focus of the film, and certainly adds to what I believe is the
real strongpoint, the atmosphere and setting...alone in the middle of nowhere, on a deserted
stretch of road...gotta love it. Equally impressive was the music, it's top notch and doesn't
detract at all from everything that's going on.
Its ironic ending is reminiscent of the 1990
remake of the aforementioned NOTLD, but in a subtle
way, and in a way I think is a bit of a tip-of-the-hat to
the films that inspired it. I would also be remiss without
mentioning the pretty good scare that was thrown in, which
I suppose I didn't expect from such a short film. I was
sitting back in my chair, enjoying the show, legs outstretched
on my desk and my hands behind my head...and then BLAMMO!
I nearly jumped out of my chair. Oh, how I love a good fright!
