When things have settled somewhat, what items do you think will be the most traded, most valuable or both?
Off the top of my head, perishable goods* would get traded, and its worth would go up the rarer it becomes.
Firearms. Not everybody will have them. Not everybody knows how to make ammo for them. Everybody will need them.
What else?
*I was mostly thinking foods here. It's too general a statement. Batteries would be good, and maybe soaps could be worth something. Toilet paper? Anything else?

Well, some of us are a whole lot older than that. I think Bob might have actually fought in the civil war

i think recreational drugs would have immense value, due to their sparcity and also everyone's need for an escape from a zombie world

Whisky. Pretty much anything made in the south, Ireland or Scotland and I might give you my soul for a bottle of that in ZPAW.

Yea. I think you'll see a def demand for alcohol and it traded at a premium. I would constantly be on the hunt for scotch im sure

I'm a huge fan of Glenlivet, Chivas Regal, Maker's Mark, and Bushmill's. Bourbon, Scotch and Irish Whisky, any of those and I'd be likely to trade a share of my soul, or something much more useful.

I don't think Alcohol will be that expensive, it keeps for years and even though no doubt some liquor stores will get looted they're probably below gun shops and supermarkets in terms of target order. Even if you pick up all you can carry, glass bottles tend to be kinda heavy. And you can make hooch with a still, granted not many of us know how but it doesn't require a damn laboratory.
Modern medicines on the other hand, I think those will REALLY be expensive, even more than ammo, if even up for trade at all. In this forum alone there's like 3 reloaders and not a single pharmacological chemist, even if there was it's not like setting up a lab is easy (unless you're cooking meth I guess). I'm guessing a simple box of 2nd gen antibiotics will go for several bottles of JD.
The only thing I could think of that you'd trade medicines for is some kind of autonomous power generator like a wind turbine or solar panels. Even a wood-burning Stirling engine would be very valuable. I mean, anything that cranks out electricity but doesn't need scarce fuels would enable you to use all these electrical lifesavers from simple fridges and lights to machinery and GPS systems, even digital optics for guns.
As for rec. drugs, it depends. MJ will be cheaper, probably even cheaper than alcohol since it's a lot more efficient and easier to grow it than to grow wheat, barley or rye, ferment it and distill it. Meth might be more expensive than alc but not by much. And I'm kinda walking on thin ice here but meth might actually get hella popular given its obvious military applications. Coke will probably be unexistant outside Colombia. Anything harder will probably not be very popular on account of high probability of getting you killed.

For certain medicine will be worth far more than it's weight in diamonds or gold.
I think the alcohol will go in a hurry.
Like many things it will depend on how fast the general population goes.
It if happens in days there will be long term supplies galore.
If it takes months there will be killings over a bottle of water or a can of sardines.

Not one mention of salt? It is one of the main things you can use to preserve food without refrigeration. I really think that salt would turn into a currency during a post-apocalypse situation.

Hygiene products that we take for granted like tooth paste and TP. Alcohol for its obvious reasons and for cleaning of wounds. Whoever said they'd trade firearms...that doesn't sound like the best idea to me.
Check out my story "Zombies Across the Border" in the books section and let me know what you think!
