There's some guys around here who shoot blackout .
I have heard them mention it a time or two but I am running out of room in my head so unless it is something I am interested in I tend to ignore it.
Is it something I should take notice of?

Well, some of us are a whole lot older than that. I think Bob might have actually fought in the civil war

Why don't you give it a try Homey.
Tell us how it works out...

A buddy of mine just ordered an upper in Blackout. He shoots quite a bit of multi-gun and claims it's the next big thing.
I can barely afford to feed the guns I have. Don't see a brand new caliber in my near future.

i think the blackout's been around for a while, a couple years at least.
here's a link: http://300aacblackout.com/

the round looks silly, huge long bullet in a case about the same size of the bullet.
Posted Image
the case is barely a bottleneck-type, someone not familiar with cartridge case types could easily mistake it for a straight walled pistol case.
its about 2/3rd the length of a 5.56 round.

The .300 is only about 1/8 of an inch or so shorter than 5.56 as it was designed the be used with the same mags, receiver and BCG.
All one needs to do to convert an AR to this platform is swap out the barrel.

You would have to be pretty thick to confuse this round with a pistol round.

There's a visible shoulder on the case. No way anybody could mistake it for a straight walled case.
Looks like a whisper cartridge, maybe designed for suppresors?

Yeah, one of the spec'd loads for it is sub-sonic, specifically for suppressed fire.

I've fired a 300 Blackout in a suppressed AR15. It is very quiet and very accurate. The guy that had the AR was having a Rem700 built by a local company, Predator Custom.
The other 2 rounds I've never heard of.

Go here to find out about the 7.62 x 40 http://www.wilsoncom...om/762x40WT.htm

the wilson round is not meant to be subsonic . its something like the 6.8 , more power than the .224 bullets in the same package .

The blackout is pretty much the same as the whisper just backed my remington and AAC .

I dig the idea of the .338 specter too . The one that I've seen we couldn't get it near quiet enough .

You'd be surprised how thick people are... I decided to do a test. bring the round to Walmart and pretend I'm looking for that caliber (of course Walmart doesn't stock it, but I just wanted to see how dumb people are). one guy thought it was some kind of pointy-bullet 30 carbine. LOL
I could barely hold in my laughter.

Ever seen 7-TCU?
It's a .223 case necked up to 7mm.
I used to shoot it in a contender.
I found forming the brass to be a pain in the brass so I got rid of the barrel.

Way to be an ass, dude.

Supposing your story is true(which I doubt), all you did was purposely throw away an opportunity to spread some knowledge and show non-gun folks that the opinions they have of gun-folks are correct.

If the folks at your walmart are anything like the people staffing the walmarts around here, they're either 19 years old, don't care about anything, are just barely paying attention to anything around them, and just there between semesters, or they're 50-something-year old immigrants and barely speak English. In any case, you knew they wouldn't know anything about the weird ass boutique cartridge you walked in with, and made fun of them for it. It's like a brain surgeon asking you to identify some lump of tissue, and then looking down his nose and deriding you for not knowing. The girl that runs the ammo counter at my walmart usually runs the automotive desk, and only comes over when a customer shows up, the only reason she has the keys is that she's been there the longest, 7 months. She usually just opens the case and lets people go back behind the counter and pick their own stuff out, she knows what she doesn't know. I go out of my way to teach her at least one thing every time I go in, because she's very nice, and hangs on to stuff she learns. I sure as shit don't look down on her, and never think low of anyone who doesn't know or has some very basic questions. Take your ass to arf.com or glocktalk, you'll find your kind of people there.

Barely hold in your laughter? I say again.....way to be an ass, dude.

On topic-

Do you guys notice how rifle cartridges are trending back to sizes and ballistics of some pretty damn old designs, like 30-40 Krag, 6mm Lee Navy, and .276 Pederson numbers?

What's old, is new again.

Yup, .30-40 is a nice, comfy round to shoot.

She's married, and pregnant. No, you can't talk to her, remember what the nice doctor said.

I was eyeballing the 30 RAR, it's basically the 7.62x39 done wrong. Based on I think 284 Winchester brass cut down to fit an AR mag and necked up to 30 caliber. CDNN has them real cheap right now, all camoed and everything. Ammo uses cases made from gold instead of brass appearantly. I thought about picking one of the R-15's up that CDNN has because they look nice and are cheap but component brass is hard to find already and I heard the reason CDNN has them is because Remington has discontinued them and the production of ammunition. Ballistics are not much better than the 7.62x39 and capacity is low due to the size of the cartridge.

The 300 AAC BLK/Blackout is the same as the 300 whisper and 300/221 Fireball. A 221 Fireball necked up to 30 caliber. I think the 7.62x40 Wilson Tactical might even be the same thing not 100% sure though. With all the range pickup 223 Remington/5.56 available I've given thought to one of those. Then again the 7.62x39 can be made to run in the same guns without case forming or expensive brass.

And you guys shouldn't be so hard on Zephyr. Part of the blame should go to Wal-Mart and their hiring and business practices.
