I was wondering how dangerous a cut shell is?

I not asking for a lecture here just wisdom or thoughts.

I had a friend once use a cut shell. It was a 12 gauge bird shot. He cut it so it would be a slug.

Not really understanding the term "cut shell", or how one could turn birdshot into a slug by simply modifying the casing...
Explain please.

He cut all the way through and around where the plastic wad was. He had it in case he saw a deer during bird season. When he shot the cut portion of the shell didn't open, yet came out as a slug.

I've heard 'em called "poor mans slugs" or "redneck slugs".

I've seen them made by cutting the hull just below where the shot sits in the wad, almost all the way around, leaving an 1/8" tab holding the hull (and shotshell) together. As Mike describes, when you fire it, the end of the hull breaks off, that and the wad, and all the shot stay as one piece. It's not very accurate, if you shoot one out of a full choke it'll fall apart and make a terrible pattern, but it does act as one of those Glazer Safety Slugs when it hits something.

They work best when loaded right into the chamber by hand, or in a break action.

Watched the video...there's no denying the stopping power I guess, but why not just carry a couple of rounds of 00 buck?
I suppose that if that's all you had it would be better than just straight birdshot though.

That's where I was going with it. In the ZPAW you might find some shells only to find they are #8 bird shot. A cut shell could save your life.

I've shot quite a few of these . They have no problem going through 2x4's and plywood . Never shot at much else with them yet though . They are mentioned in the Mi hunting regs btw .

Accuracy at various distances
Penetration at various distances.

By the way when I was told about this originally I discounted the idea saying I would just buy real slugs.

Exactly, they are contraband and if the DNR finds them you get fined. And you can't BS why you would have them on you!
