Wow lengthy post there.
But, no... I've never had a .22 go "bang" or I guess what you're talking about there is misfire (that I can recall). I've shot probably 1000's of rounds and can't remember a single incident.
For me there is one reason I would not want to carry a .22 and 2 reasons I would. (the one reason would trump the 2 given a choice)
The reason for me not to have it as a primary weapon, is simply lack of power.
2 reasons I would, ease of scavenging ammo, and ability to carry 100's of rounds. Still though if I'm running out the door with only the chance to grab one gun 7.62mm a compromise of the best of both worlds...done..

Why 22 sucks for use against the Undead Undead or Not Dead Yet is still is a poor choice

.22 rifles are easily suppressed. just saying
In my very limited and humble experience, a supressed gun is still noisy, just a bit less so, but I've only seen a supressed .22LR used once plinking off a dirt road and it constantly failed to cycle (it was a semi-auto pistol). To this day I don't know if it was the gun, the ammunition or poor maintenance since that happened a looong time ago.
Still loud? No way, even out of rifles, no need for ears on. From a 100 yards away it's difficult to know where it's coming from. 30db makes a HUGE difference.
Less loud, but still hard to ignore if there's no background noise. That was with Aguila .22LR standard (40 grains, about a thousand fps I think).
Would a Zombie at over 100 yards hear it and start coming at you, hear it but shamble about unsure where to go or not hear it at all?

We were in the desert, flat and barren. The same thing in the woods or a city street would be even less noticable I believe. We were using standard 5.56 surplus. The same can on a Walther P22 and we didn't even notice right away somebody was shooting it.

Sounds very nice, I didn't even know you could use the same supressor for .22lr and milspec 5.56. Did you have any FTE's with the Walther using it?

Zero issues, except a little blowback to the face.

I rather have a .22 than not having a gun at all when the SHTF.

$279 will get you a Remington 770 bolt rifle with a scope in a real caliber like .308 or 223

If we are talking about a 22 as an offensive weapon I would say absolutely no, for me it's a weight thing. If I am out and about and my choice is between a 22 or ~10lbs more of center fire ammo, I am taking the ammo every time. That weight is for a rifle obviously but I wouldn't even consider a 22 handgun.
But if we're talking defensively and I had no option but to pick up a 22 and put a tight group in a zombies forehead, yah I would use it.

Razor
I am not sure how to answer that question.
I guess one with a really smooth bolt that feeds well.
You would typically only have 4-5 shots and would have a scope which is unsuited for close quarters
I would think that low recoil would be important
So lets say a 16" barrel chambered in 223 that would be a manageable length.
I would think a removable box magazine would be a plus.
Is cost a factor?

well... Would you be convinced to stop attacking someone if they tagged you six or seven times in the chest with a .22lr handgun?
If they tagged me six or seven times, he might've also missed a few times too. It might be an opportune time to press the attack before he has a chance to reload.

the 45-70 does come in a marlin lever gun!
if i needed to use a bolt action i would probably go for a 1903 Springfield or a smelly if it was chambered in 308, or i had access to plenty of 303. a weapon that's designed for fighting and can manage the heat and volume of fire. a bayonet would be mighty handy in a weapon with a low rate of fire and a limited capacity.

it's pretty powerful medicine in a lever gun.
You can get AR uppers chambered in similar calibers, well, ballistically at least.

Would .22 WMR perform better enough than .22 LR to be a possible alternative to larger calibers?
