If you are physically trying to harm me, and a browning buckmark comes into the mix, it doesn't matter if it kills an attacker, getting plugged in the chest six or seven times might change your mind about continuing your assault.

what i'm getting at is - don't underestimate the firearm. a .22 can kill. .22 can daunt. hell, .22 hallow points can wreak havoc on someone's torso, especially with multiple round fired.

I have never said a 22 can't kill a Zombie or a Raider.
What I say is they are not suited for it.
They are proven as an assassins weapon and for small game but for stopping a 250 pound raider?
Not so much

I shoot lots of 22 maybe too much.
When I say too much I mean the volume may be so high that I realize how many rounds there are.
If I shot a couple of hundred a year I might go years without seeing enough bad rounds to get upset.
Some brands are better than others, some of the models within brands are better than others.

Hyper-velocity rounds like Stingers are great if they will work in your gun.
I have seen pocket pistols that would not cycle with them or mini-mags but would work fine with standard off the shelf Federal.
For about the same cost as a 22 pocket pistol you can have a .380.

a 250 lb raider could fall deader'n hell to the feet of an assailant armed with a .22. however, I understand. I was looking at it more as a self-defense pistol, not a secondary firearm. in the street, if you dump half of a mag into an attacker, they will probably stop their assault. if not, dump the other half.

Do you feel any different about .22 magnum?

Maybe it was on this forum, or maybe it was somewhere else.... But I read a pretty good point about that. The more rounds you pump into an attacker, the less likely a jury is to believe self defense. The average person doesn't understand phrases like "Shot the attacker until the threat was neutralized," they understand phrases like "Unloaded a pistol into the man's chest."

I do see what you're saying though. A .22lr *CAN* kill. It beats a knife.

I don't have any experience with 22 mag.
I intend to buy a Kel Tec PMR-30 so that will change eventually.
I think a big part of the problem is quality control at their price point.

No doubt a 22 to the heart will drop you.
A 22 to the liver will cause exsanguination in short order,
Most any organ it is going to be fatal eventually.
Peritonitis is a bitch just ask VJ.

But the undead don't care the only organ hit that will stop them is the brain.

22 pistol wouldn't hurt a zombie lol. They only do internal damage really cause once they go into someone they bounce around alot and that's why so many people die cause it will bounce around to their heart.

I mean they will kill a person if you shoot yourself in the head lol but to a zombie they wouldn't do shit.

Sorry RIP but I don't agree.
We are in the same book but on different pages.
A 22 generally has enough penetration to get in the skull if it is a good hit at relatively close range.
It does not need to be a Kronlein shot to put down a Zed.
Roger proved all it takes is Cranial penetration with a screwdriver through a Zombies ear.
Relieve the cranial pressure and the reanimation ends.

That's not true. Knives are more dangerous than guns if you're within arms/knives reach. Guns have one wrong end. knives, well- knives have more than one wrong end. Stab, slash, chop, slice, plunge. Gun = Pull trigger, or use as cudgel.

To stop a Zombie a slash attack is better than a stab attack.
Go for tendons

To stop a raider either will work.

Back in the good 'ol days, the .22 was WAY more powerful than it is today. We used them to stop tanks and hunt moose with until they dumbed it down and wussified it until it was only good for plinking and for shooting bunnies. :zombie5:

Okay, the .22 has a few uses, it has very little recoil, so it's ideal for teaching new shooters with out developing a flinch. Ever been to the range where some idiot takes his girl to shoot for the first time and hands her a .357 Magnum? Too much noise and recoil, then she's afraid of the thing. Either he's a complete idiot, or he wants her afraid of the gun to make himself feel more manly.

The other big plus is the cost of ammo- I can get 500 rounds for $18. To buy that much 45 acp ammo would cost me $180, that's just for cheap WWB target ammo, good hollow points are about $1 a bullet.

While I agree strongly with Bob on the .22 for defense, it still has uses.
If they ban guns, how will I fight the zombies?

I have yet to have a single failure to fire with my 10/22, however, I'm in the "I've shot hundreds of rounds" camp with that gun as opposed to the "I've shot thousands." Also, they've all been the same kind of ammo. Remington, I think... I don't have the original box.

In my very limited and humble experience, a supressed gun is still noisy, just a bit less so, but I've only seen a supressed .22LR used once plinking off a dirt road and it constantly failed to cycle (it was a semi-auto pistol). To this day I don't know if it was the gun, the ammunition or poor maintenance since that happened a looong time ago.

Still loud? No way, even out of rifles, no need for ears on. From a 100 yards away it's difficult to know where it's coming from. 30db makes a HUGE difference.
