Posted Image See what is making everyone go ga-ga at the Toronto Film Festival. Just watch the trailer right below the synopsis... I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Toronto 2011: 'The Raid' Starts Midnight Madness on a Butt-Kicking Note

This movie is a whole mess of bone-crunching, face-pummeling, throat-slicing and fist-pounding awesomeness. The midnight screening had people cheering, wincing and shaking their heads in disbelief.

Wow, what a kick-off. Literally and figuratively.

The Raid opened the Midnight Madness portion of the Toronto International Film Festival early Friday, and if you love action movies, you cannot miss this movie.

The film comes from Indonesia and tells the story of a SWAT team that becomes trapped in a tenement run by a ruthless mobster, armed with two highly violent martial arts killers and an army of machete-swinging, machine gun-toting dealers and thugs.

That simple logline betrays all the amazing and inventive sequences using the Indonesian fighting form called silat that were put into this by writer-director [Read More Here]

Synopsis:

Deep in the heart of Jakarta’s slums lies an impenetrable safe house for the world’s most dangerous killers and gangsters. Until now, the run-down apartment block has been considered untouchable to even the bravest of police. Cloaked under the cover of pre-dawn darkness and silence, an elite swat team is tasked with raiding the safe house in order to take down the notorious drug lord that runs it. But when a chance encounter with a spotter blows their cover and news of their assault reaches the drug lord, the building’s lights are cut and all the exits blocked. Stranded on the sixth floor with no way out, the unit must fight their way through the city’s worst to survive their mission. Starring Indonesian martial arts sensation Iko Uwais. -Twitch

THE RAID Wins TIFF Midnight Madness Award!

Big congratulations go out to writer-director Gareth Huw Evans, stars Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim, Yayan Ruhian and the rest of the team behind Indonesian action picture The Raid, which has just won the Cadillac People's Choice Midnight Madness Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

A largely non-competitive festival Toronto gives out very few awards, the most prominent of which are the People's Choice picks, three awards given based on [Read More Here]

"And The Inane Non-News Headline Of The Day Award Goes To ..." (by Todd Brown, May 24, 2011)

Just a few hours ago I posted a rant directed at the PR folk behind The Hunger Games in particular but also against the generally growing wave of inane junk that is increasingly passing itself off as film journalism online these days.

. . .

Seriously, people, what were you thinking? How could this possibly be considered news? Did you owe the publicist a favor?

A smart reader had the great idea to see how many "The Raid" articles have been posted on [Twitch. "Bradford 2012 Review: THE RAID: REDEMPTION" (May 8, 2012) is the forty-seventh (47th) Twitch article about the movie, and the fifth (5th) Twitch review of it.] The results... A tsunami of news? THE RAID, THE RAID everywhere! Hard to keep up?

[JPEG of Sasori41@ADC's outdated list of the articles in question]

Let's push further! When the film was finally coming out in North American theaters, the distributor Sony Pictures had the great idea to create this amazing poster... Oh wait! What's written on the building...? [The following: "'The best action movie in decades!' - TwitchFilm".]

[JPEG of the poster in question]

And if you look carefully, you can see the name of Twitch founder Todd Brown at the bottom of the poster. Most reviews published online were positive (7.4 rating on RottenTomatoes), and yet... Great choice!

The website of the executive producer is praising the film! [One of the companies that produced The Raid was Los Angeles County-based XYZ Films, which has "an ownership stake in" Twitch, and is partners with Paris-based Celluloid Dreams in the international sales agent for the movie, Celluloid Nightmares.] What's next? A quote from the director himself saying that he loved working on this project? Not obvious enough? Marketing fail.

This movie was just great. I don't usually go for action films, but this was such a fun, exciting ride, with plot twists and interesting characters.
