Well it happened.
Bob had bought a complete AR lower not intending to get an upper.
He could not stand it and got one anyway.

I really do appreciate the story. not much of that stuff happens in my neck of the woods, good thing to bare in mind.

on a side note
You know what's always a bit spooky? Finding a cache of ammunition and magazines in a dumpster. I don't quite understand who would have ditched it in a dumpster, but Hand to god. I was living in a small sh!t dump town of about 14,000 called Red Bluff. The town was a Sh!t hole. lots of crime, lots of meth, heroin, pills, the bad stuff. Well, I was taking the trash out in my Quadplex to the dumpster, and noticed a yellow dewalt duffle bag. Always curious, I decided to pull it out of the trash. Opened it, and immediately closed it, and took it up to my apartment. probably a stupid idea, but what the hell, right?

Three AR mags, two .45 pistol mags (Maybe 1911? not sure), and three 15 round 9mm mags- all gassed up, three boxes of 9mm, one box of .45, a couple hand fulls of twelve gauge 00 buckshot, and two boxes of 5.56. I understand that it's probably just someone's shooting bag, but considering the location, the fact that someone just dropped it in a dumpster, and the fact that the magazines were loaded was cause for suspicion.

Hey I saw that this was originally about the Ruger 10/22 and I've got a question.. when my firearms' license finally comes in I am going to get a .22 and I have been thinking about a Remington 597 (VTR to be specific) but I know that the Ruger is an excellent rifle (modded or not)

Which is a better purchase - why?

Out the box a 10-22 is rock solid and there is just so much you can do to one.

Never shot that Remington thingamajig but I can tell you I'm happy as can be with my Ruger purchase.

If you aren't sold on the reliability alone, do yourself a favor. Do a search for the aftermarket stuff you can get for that Remington... and then compare it to what's out there for the Ruger.

I'm ordering a couple of these Matt , I've heard that they are the best mags that you can get for a 10-22 .

really these are supposed to be the "best" . but they cost like it too

Part of the reason I like the Remington VTR is that I don't need to buy much with it to have it look the way I want. It's already in an "AR style", which is what the VTR refers to opposed to the regular 597, I have done a bit of research regarding the Ruger and there is a lot of things I can buy to kit it up but I'm not sure I want go through all of that. The Remington 597 VTR is more expensive here, about $400-$450 while the Ruger 10/22 starts at $220 with a synthetic stock.

Here is an image of the Remington 597 VTR out of the box

This is the Remington 597 standard version

Here is the Ruger 10/22 as we all know

As you can see there isn't a huge difference between the base models of either gun, it's just getting a head start on the accessories, and it's factory Remington parts on it, not Joe Blow's Gun and Cola store which has advantages for various reasons.

I'm leaning towards the Remington but my hands on time is still low with firearms and I know people around here more know than I do so I'm honestly looking for a significant reason NOT to purchase the Remington in which case I will go with the Ruger

And just to note the only firearm I use on a regular basis is taken very good care of with thorough cleanings so it's a matter of the Remington jamming a lot when it gets dirty unless I take it for a week without my cleaning kit I don't see that being an issue (kind of enjoy sitting down having a smoke and cleaning my gun lol)

A while back I posted a picture of an AR with a disco ball.
Does anyone know what thread that picture is in?
I can't find it.

If you want an out-of-the-box AR style .22, Ruger also offers a version of the 10-22 in a similar configuration to that. It's called the SR-25. It takes standard AR-15 stocks and pistol grips.

If it takes a standard AR stock I bet a bump stock would fit on it.
I wonder if there would be enough recoil to make it work.

I just bought a Charter Arms Undercover 38 Special.
It is 44 years old, nickel plated, fired 10 shots total.
It looks like brand new, came with the original box and 40 rounds of the box of bullets that was bought when it was.
Not too bad for $100

I just picked up a Smith & Wesson 686 revolver, 2 different Browning HiPower pistols and another No4Mk1 Enfield. Shot them all this past weekend.
We got in more Mosin Nagant 91/30's from the Ukraine last month. Set back a nice laminate stocked beauty for myself. Going to bring it home in a few days after I find a way to break it to the missus.

We are getting in about 5 million rounds of 7.62x54R ammo in a week or so. May have to get a case or 3 of that stuff also.

Dear god scope it! and get a cheap sling swivel for the front and put cheap bipod on it. Buy a extra mag plunger spring, and butler creek makes good high cap mags. Its not the rifle so much as the scope. My 10-22 scope rings cost 6.99 at meijer, and the rifle was about 180. but I paid over 300 for the scope thats on it, and we shoot at nickles with it.

My latest is a nickel Charter Arms undercover manufactured in the sixties.
It goes on the block after the first of the year though.
