I just picked up a Ruger 10/22 the other day. It's actually my first .22lr firearm. I bought it because I needed something I can plink and practice with that doesn't break the bank. I'm absolutely 100% impressed and satisfied with everything about this gun so far. My first plan was to get a lightweight polymer folding stock with a pistol grip for it, like a Tapco or the Butler Creek stock. After shooting it with the traditional wood stock, I just don't see that happening now.

Very nice Matt.
They are a classic design that shoots just fine.
They make all sorts of accesories for them.
A 10-22 is the Barbie of 22 rifles.
Although all ll I did to mine was put a scope on it.

I just read yesterday that Ruger is now making a factory 25 round mag, (Bill Ruger is surely turning over in his grave right about now...1911's, AR's, high cap mags, etc...)
My main issue with aftermarket 10/22 mags is less than stellar reliability. Ramline, Butler Creek, et al. All seem to wiggle around a bit too much and cause failure to feeds from time to time.
I may just have to go pick up a couple and see how they shake out, $25 a piece.
I love my 10/22. Still one of my favorite guns to shoot!

Never fired mine. Still have the original box and those goofy mounts.

Nice how much did that set you back, are you going to scope it?

Cost me about 240 after tax. I might put a scope on it, I haven't really decided. The sights are already pretty nice. I didn't know about the factory 25 rounders... I wonder if they're just as reliable? That would be bosstastic.

If I could get a stock with a similar appearance to the AC-556 I might try that out.

25 rounders are a kick in the pants. Especially if you get the coupling mags. 50 rounds at the ready. You know, for that can or squirrel problem. I'm not a fan of the 10/22 mods, the rifle is fine the way it is!

I agree about not messing with perfection.

I haven't taken this thing down yet, are the stocks fairly quick to swap out? If so, I might pick up a "tacticool" stock anyways just for the days when I want to have fun with it.

10/22 is a great weapon

Even the Israeli Army thinks so-

They use it for severe crowd control. When Molotovs and rocks start injuring policemen and soldiers, this baby is brought in to shoot knees out. Also is used by IDF Special Ops for killing dogs who may be aggressive or that may alert terrorists to their presence.

I'm going on a kayak trip in a few days (weather permitting) and I'd kind of like to bring it with me as a critter-gitter. I haven't been kayaking before though, and I'm kind of worried about it falling out into the river, especially if I tip the kayak. :-/

Matt, on a 10/22 I would worry about a barrel before a stock. Also, wood is great because of the weight and feel, but if you live by the ocean it will swell and mess up your scope/sights.

What you really need is a dry bag but they are kind of pricey.
If it was a handgun I would say put it in a ziplock inside a another one or just put it in a snap lid plastic container if it was a small pistol.
This is where polymer (notice how I never say plastic when I am referring to firearms?) really shines.

You can use two heavy duty garbage bags and removable zip ties for the rifle. Inside of that put two empty 2 liter plastic bottles inside another garbage bag and make sure you use the bottle caps too.
Not pretty, but it works, and if it goes into the drink it will float. Make sure the bag won't allow water in. I would also bring a silicone gun/reel cloth and a soft, small cotton rag for use on the rifle. Keep them dry. Gallon ziplock bags work well with ammo as well.
We've done this for years, no problems. We then upgraded to a protective rifle bag waterproofed with "Camp Dry" spray sealer....two coats. Make sure it dries before use. About 24 hours.

the stock isn't hard to remove at all. just pop the pins out. A co-worker of mine had his fancy 10/22 at the pit about a year ago. this guy really liked his rifle. heavy barrel, bi-pod, monte carlo stock, a variable magnification scope (don't remember make or specs), match trigger, all of that good stuff. Brought it down to bust a critter that was responsible for plugging a culvert. I've got to say, that was a nice shooting rifle. But, I'm fond of the bear bones. I'm fond of .22's period. I've had a savage mk. II for years and years. my old man got it for me from walmart before Michael Moore had his way with them with his Bowling for Columbine flick.

Anyway - Savage Mk. II- Great little rifle.

To take the stock off, just remove the barrel band, make sure the safety is set at the halfway point, (even on both sides), and unscrew the little screw forward of the mag well, it's just that easy...

zbuddy: What's wrong with the barrel that I need to worry about?

Bob: I could probably put my .380 in a dry bag. lol.

I think I'm just going to leave it here. I asked the guy who set this up and apparently our route follows a bike trail, so if I go shooting at chipmunks when we camp I might scare a libtard and get the law after me.

As a dirty gun fearing pot smoking liberal, I find that offensive. we prefer the term "Saviors of humanity". Because of carbon credits and taking those scary guns away from dirty rednecks.

Although if you hear banjo music it's time to break out the pistols.
