John Cairns' Schoolgirl Apocalypse (Sêrâ-fuku mokushiroku) - one of last year's Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF) It Project selections - is set to have its world première at this year's Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan), which runs from July 14th to July 24th.

The cast of Schoolgirl Apocalypse apparently includes Rino Higa, Asami Miyakawa, Mai Tsujimoto, and Kaoru Nishida.

Here's a synopsis for Schoolgirl Apocalypse from the It Project: "A Japanese schoolgirl, Sakura, finds her average life in a small town turned inside out when all the males begin to attack and kill females. With few skills and only her kyudo bow and an English textbook to accompany her she sets out on a journey through a dark world of murder and survival. The trauma of witnessing the inexplicable mass murder of friends and then her own family begins to drive her toward madness. As her world devolves, she loses her grip on what is reality and what is fantasy. Through the madness comes something even more frightening, something not of this world. The weak women are quickly destroyed and those that survive are damaged. Sakura must make a choice if she is to survive at all and it is even doubtful that she can survive even if she chooses. With her sanity in question she wanders about narrowly escaping her own death until she finds a woman who is equipped and mentally ready to kill. But this woman is also dangerous and instead of support only offers Sakura violence and more punishment. As Sakura begins to find the way through the madness and toward survival she is confronted by the question of why this is all happening, who or what is doing this? In this place of fear and dread Sakura must decide whether to survive and find the answers or give up and die."

Here's a synopsis for Schoolgirl Apocalypse from the official website for the movie: "Japanese schoolgirl Sakura (Higarino) has her idyllic small-town life turned inside-out when the local males start savagely killing the females. Armed with only her kyudo bow for protection and an English textbook for comfort, Sakura journeys through an apocalyptic world of mayhem. As trauma from witnessing the violent deaths of friends and family drives her toward madness, Sakura takes refuge in an animated dreamworld where she meets Billy (Mackenzie), a character from her English text! Billy helps her survive murderous zombies, as well as an even more formidable foe in Aoi (Tsujimoto), as she races to find real-world Billy and answers to the questions: Why is all this happening? And who or what is behind it?"

Schoolgirl Apocalypse star Higarino is in another Japanese zombie movie: Kôsuke Hishinuma's upcoming Life Is Dead (Raifu izu deddo).

The screenplay for Life Is Dead was written by Hishinuma, based on the eponymous manga serial by Tomohiro Koizumi. The movie stars (listed order corresponds to order on official website) Atsushi Arai, Higarino, Ryôsuke Kawamura, Shintarô Akutsu, Ryô Shihono, Takuya Nagaoka, Airi Nakajima, Aya Enjôji, and Susumu Kobayashi.

Earl Grey Film K.K. (K.K. Âru Gurei Firumu) is scheduled to release Life Is Dead theatrically in Japan on February 11th.
