Finally!
I knew I couldn't be the only FAL fan here.

I have an AR in 6.8 that I built up about a year or so ago. I really like the rifle a lot. But ammo and components are pretty pricey. I strictly reload for it for now. It hits like a hammer with the couple if deer I've taken with it.
The SF guys we built when I worked at Barrett uppers for that used them in Iraq and Afganistan liked them also. They AAR's we were privy to said the round performed extremely well.
I like my 6.8, but would probably only use it near the home till ammo ran out. Going out and about would give the 5.56 the nod, better chance on finding that round in stores.
Love my M1A scout, but it has a wood stock and is a little hefty for extended walking trips. I would probably use the carbine FAL.

C'mon, give me the lowdown on your FALs.

Had great respect for Cooper. He earned that many times over. However, did not agree with him 100% and the bolt action scout is one of those times.
Yes, if a bolt action was what I had, I would not feel disarmed. However, why accept such a limitation in the here and now? I read an article on that Ruger and my opinion is that it may serve as a hunting arm but it is a fail at anything else. Much rather have almost any AR platform than the Ruger scout.
As to my 'one', the M1 Garand. That may make me seem as outdated as Cooper, but I can shoot fast, reload quick and club the snot out of anything that gets too close.
Sorry, no gadgets. Have a sling.

I remember having massive grins as a kid seeing a new G&A magazine in the mail every month so I could read Cooper's artiicles. That guy was a 1911 NUT!

Built them myself.
The top one is a Para that has a 16" barrel with a British L1A1 flash hider. I cut the barrel and threaded it for the right hand threads of the L1A1 threads.
The upper reciever(the serialized part) is a Entreprise Arms Metric receiver. I came into the Para parts right at the end of the AWB in 2004. It is a great shooting rifle.
The bottom rifle has an 18" barrel I cut back when I worked at Barrett. I kept the left hand threads so I could ue the Belgian combo device or any other after market flash hider. I have a short flash hider to put on it, just haven't done it yet.
The receiver on it is a DSA, the stocks and handguards are Penguin Arms furniture.
The top cover is a DSA railed top cover to allow the mounting of optics. Haven't done it yet. Don't know what I want to do yet. Probably a .308 calibrated ACOG.

I read something about a new (to me at least) ACOG. Something like a 5x35?
What do you think about the DSA Tactical Carbine with the short gas system? Could be a good overall weight decrease for me. I don't know how difficult finding parts would be or how much more expensive they are.

It's a great FAL. A friend has one. It takes all the common FAL parts. Just the gas tube and piston is what is considered the short items. Well the handguards also. A really handy rifle. I just like my 2 rifles.
DSA puts out top notch gear. If people ask me about them, I tell them to buy with no reservation. I just build the same version much cheaper myself.

I'm not a builder unfortunately. My thoughts on the short system......
I haven't seen parts for it anywhere except DSA. That's a problem in a pinch.
All parts on my rifle are DSA except the glass. I've seen quad rail handguards from other companies for half the price, but I'm leery about buying them. DSA parts are the best so you get what you pay for. The quad rail runs about 250.
I only use Styer mags, are there good ones from somewhere else?

The standard rifle has a 21" bbl. You can get an 11, 13, 16, 18 "bbl
Mine is the carbine with the side folder. I would only buy DSA, pricey but worth it. Check out the website........dsarms.com

Well there are metric and inch patterns, no interchangability between them. Metric is more common. Many different versions available but I don't know who makes the rifles for Classic.
DSA bought all drawings and tooling from Europe and brought it here. Damn good stuff but you pay for it. They do ARs as well. I think cav has a DSA upper.
They can build a rifle based on your needs. Best customer service I've come across in this field. They also sell the rifle they submitted for the SASS program. Prices on their website are high, mine was 300 cheaper.

those might be Imbel parts rifles. Imbel makes FAL's in Brazil and are known to be pretty good rifles, actually contract factory items IIRC.

DSA uses Imbel parts on their receivers on some rifles. They used to have a heavy barrel version as well. Can't remember if it's the G1 or L1A1.
