As of now this project's status is classified as being in pre-production, and I serious a doubt we'll see this anytime in 2012.

Personally, I feel neither overly excited nor pessimistic about this venture. I have a lot of questions though about what direction they are going to take the story.

I'm sure it will be good. Although I am getting tired of Tim Burton's style.

I agree but he did do a great job with Sleepy Hollow.

I liked the early 90's short lived Dark Shadows tv series that starred Ben Cross(from Chariots of Fire) as Barnabas Collins.

The 1991 Dark Shadows "Revival Series" lasted only one season, and was basically a remake of the Dark Shadows 'Original' Series which began at episode #210. I like the Revival Series too, but I don't really want to see it turned into a movie. I'd rather see something different than telling the same old Dark Shadows storyline all over again.

The only thing so far that really puzzles me with their cast selections is choosing Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass) to play the role of Carolyn Stoddard. They are going to have someone who just turned 14 years old to play that part? Carolyn Stoddard is supposed to be a 20 something, single girl who come and goes often from Collinwood. She occasionally stays out half the night but is not exactly what you would normally consider to be a 'party animal' however she's living the life of a adult female who is in the market to get engaged.

Btw... As of yesterday, according to IMDB the status of this production has suddenly gone from 'Pre-Production' to "Filming' now!
Wow, what timing in the creation of this thread.

Carolyn Stoddard could be a bit of a bad girl too. Actually I got to see the original DS from the 60's on scifi back in the 90's and it was pretty fun and 'kicky' to use a 60's expression.

I see they have not cast Victoria Winters yet. I wonder if they are holding out for Natalie Portman. She would make a good Maggie Evans. I'm thinking of the 60's Maggie Evans not the 90's revival one.

What I really want is a spoof of Dark Shadows.

Thats true. Burton's horror atmosphere was excellent in Sleepy Hollow. One thing that blew me way when I watched the behind the scenes was when they showed the forest was actually a set! Now that is movie magic.

Jonny Lee Miller, Chloe Moretz and Helena Bonham Carter Join Johnny Depp in 'Dark Shadows'

Tim Burton’s Johnny Depp starrer begins U.K. shoot.
LONDON – Jonny Lee Miller, Chloe Moretz and Helena Bonham Carter have joined the already star-spangled cast of Tim Burton’s Johnny Depp starrer Dark Shadows.

The Warner Bros.-backed big-screen take on the 1960s cult gothic vampire TV soap opera is shooting in the British capital and at Pinewood Studios.

Burton’s adaptation of the TV show – reported to be a shared favorite of the director and long-time collaborator Depp – is penned by Seth Grahame-Smith based on the TV series created by Dan Curtis.

Posted Image Cool DS Interview with Kathryn Leigh Scott who played in the Original DS series! Kathryn and many of the original cast members will be making cameo appearances in the DS remake.

[Interview] Original 'Dark Shadows' Star Kathryn Leigh Scott!!
It was a dream about a mysterious young woman on a train that led to the creation of the gothic soap opera "Dark Shadows", which originally aired from 1966 to 1971. With the twisted tale of vampire Barnabus Collins and his endless search through time to find his lost love, Josette du Pres Collins, I was enthralled at any early age.

I vividly remember watching reruns the series on the small black & white television in the kitchen of my childhood home. Thus, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with Josette herself, Kathryn Leigh Scott, about her new novel, "Dark Passages", and her cameo in the upcoming Dark Shadows movie directed by Tim Burton. Posted Image Here's a few pics released yesterday with what appears to be Johnny Depp and Chloe Moretz walking on a remote beach in South Devon, England... What's up with the face paint on Barnabas? Is that sunscreen or has he become the new spokesperson for Noxzema? Maybe they decided instead to shoot a film about the the life & times of Michael Jackson or make another Batman Movie featuring the Joker again.

Synopsis:

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy… until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

Posted Image In reaction to the paparazzi pics which I posted the last time on this thread, Warner Bros. in a 'knee jerk' reaction released this cast photo.

Johnny Depp's true 'Dark Shadows' vampire revealed! -- EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK

Behold the real visage of Johnny Depp’s vampire from Dark Shadows!
Last week, long-range paparazzi shots of the actor wearing ghostly white makeup, large sunglasses and a pulled down fedora made fans of the original 1966-71 supernatural soap opera bristle nervously, with complaints he looked simply too strange.

Nevermind that he’s playing a 200-year-old vampire, which is strange enough.

As you can see from this cast shot, Depp’s bloodsucking pater familias Barnabas Collins actually borrows heavily from the aged-little boy look of original Dark Shadows star [Read More Here]

Dark Shadows (2012) Cast as seen in the photo (from left to right)

  • Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter) - More make-up, and hair dye please.

  • Carolyn Stoddard (Chloë Moretz) - How did Carolyn got from a free-spirited, 20+ something to a girl in Jr. High School?

  • Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green) - Why is she wearing long pants and the rest of the ladies are in skirts? Is she protesting something or is it fashion statement?

  • David Collins (Gulliver McGrath) - This is your big break kid.... Don't blow it!

  • Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcote) - Hmmm... Vicky's hair color has changed, and she's dressed like a 13 year old. What in the hell is going on here?

  • Barnabas Collins (Depp) - Not bad JD! You fit the part exactly. You're even carrying the wolf's head cane to compete the look... BTW, I want it! Posted Image

  • Mrs. Johnson (Ray Shirley) - Wow! You're a lot older looking than I last remembered.

  • Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley) - Gheesh! Who in their right mind would let this guy into their house.

  • Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller) - Yep, that looks like Roger alright! Snobby as usual.

  • Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) - Interesting look. She's a little easier on the eyes than Joan Bennett was.

I did too. I was looking forward to the 2nd season since the 1st ended in a cliff hanger with the duel. Any idea why it was discontinued?

I didn't think it was too bad. Definitely reeked of Burton's style, not to mention Bonham-Carter and Depp are in more of his films than not (I read that of the last ten features Burton did, Depp starred in nine of them). The stylizing of the film made Depp's Barnabas Collins look less painted than in the early release photos.

Overall, it was not bad. I saw it in theaters, but I think waiting for the DVD would have suited just fine.

On a side note, I saw Depp on an interview about the movie. Apparently, the fingernails he wore were so hard to function with that he actually hired a couple of people with the specific job of helping him use the bathroom.
