Lets talk about green/renewable/maintenance free zombie killing devices (GZKD's ™ for short). Devices that will outlast you, that do not need a lot of maintenance, manpower, or fuel to work. I have a few ideas. These are long-term devices intended to keep on killing, even when nobody is around. Here are some that come to mind;
Windmills. Not only can they be utilized to create power, they can also be and effective zed killer. Yes windmills. Think about it, what do all windmills have? Blades. There are a few things that would need to be considered before you go crafting your own power producing zed slasher first though. Height is a major factor in todays windmills. They are usually to tall right? It will take some cutting off of the base to get them to a desired height, even then, not all zeds are the same height, so what would work for say re-animated Shaq may not work on an toddler. This is why there will need to be a variance of heights on your windmill ranch.
Secondly, your blades will need to be modified in a way that will either slash or bash zed's head and not bend or dull. This is where size matters. We are not talking about a 4 foot windmill that you see spinning on a mast of a sailboat or the like. We will need supersize ones. Ones that will wreck several zombies at once and not even slow down. Think about a fan blade. Most of us have stuck our finger or a pencil or the like into a small ventilation fan and stopped it. But a massive blade weighing a hundred pounds or more will take much more to stop. When these blades have the momentum from the wind they can reach some very substantial speeds. Of course no wind and they are ineffective, which will make placement, clearing of surrounding areas, and weather all decisive factors on whether or not a windmill ranch will serve a purpose for you or not.
Thirdly, who says that zeds are going to come flocking to the whirling blade of a windmill? Doesnt sounds very tempting to something that is after human flesh right? Well this is where you need to get creative. Your windmills are going to be producing power right? Even if its just a little bit of power, its enough to power a small stereo or PA system that will be transmitting the recorded and repetitive sounds of a young girl (virgin girl for effectiveness) in distress. This is assured to draw in the dead by the droves. I have a few other ideas but need to hammer out the details on this one first.

Quite possibly the stupidest idea I've ever heard. Do you even know *WHY* windmills are built so high?

You would need a VERY consistent and substantial wind to turn a rotor of that size with any speed.
I think the idea is one that would be cool to see in a movie though...
Possible line of defense for a fictional group of survivors...

Heres some you could possibly live in that are not up high. With a little modification and in the right place, say atop a cliff or mountain, and you could have plenty of wind to supply your uber home defense and power generation system.

Here is a suggestion for you.
Instead of the vanes making contact with the Zed how about instead of driving a grist wheel it drives some sort of horizontally rotating blade near the base.

That would be pretty wicked.

And rather than wind driven build it near a source of running water using a paddle wheel to drive a small generator for power and a blade for defense.

Hrm.... Set up next to a nice big river and you could make a "Chain Saw" fence.

The chainsaws would be loud as hell. Green energy seems the most logical solution for a power source though. A combination of wind, solar, and hydro power would provide all the energy a small colony could ask for. I'd use it to power an electric fence. One that's been juiced up to deliver a brain-frying jolt.

Imagine if you could have enough energy to put a few of these around your base. They could have seismic sensors that switch them on if anything approaches. If you wanted to be able to go near them, you could wear RFID bracelets. Put strong RFID readers on the tesla coils that switch the system off completely when you're near it.

If you get bored, you can have them play music for you.

Well, some of us are a whole lot older than that. I think Bob might have actually fought in the civil war

Well my vision of a chain saw fence was more like a fence made out of a series of long chains with some sort of blades attached to them. The principle would be rather simple in that your just having a series of these chains that encircle your camp. In essence it would be just the chain part of the chain saw serving as your fence, and you could use a large river to power whatever mechanics you would require to keep the chains rotating around in a circle. Might be a little noisy, I couldn't really say, but I think any noise made would be negated by the fact that the fence itself would slowly grind zombies into itty bitty pieces without much human help.

If you have that much power at your disposal I say just electrify the fu**er and fry em all!

Think Zed can be stopped/killed by an electric fence? Would a powerful enough one cook their brains enough to re-kill them?

Suppose you could do that... Assuming electricity works on them. Or you could just as easily use the electricity to power lights, homes, and such instead. Couple thoughts. How many volts would you have to be producing to create a respectable electric fence that you could potentially light them on fire with? How easy would it be to generate that amount of power off a river.

Probably depends on the speed of the water and the technological level of the production equipment.
An electric fence would be most effective against raiders who were not expecting it.
Let a bunch of them get halfway up and turn on the juice.

For the most part electric fences are like locks.
They are a deterrent.
My daddy used to say a lock was to keep an honest man honest.
