I would have to say that The Clone Wars is in my top 5 favorite TV shows right now.
Kinda bummed that we have to wait till fall for the next season.

I love the original three films. They were a major part of my childhood. But I hate to say it, but I HATE episodes 1-3. Those movies are terrible and Lucas should have let others direct all the sequels like Empire and Jedi.

Me and a few mates are in a local pub quiz team, its every thursday and always has a different theme, this week is star wars and as I'm the weekest link (only seen phantom menance) I now have to spend my free day watching all 6 films. I thought I would like them as I'm a huge Kurosawa fan and my housemate said that they are infulenced by his work, but seeing the 1st one, if there anything like that, I'll need to get really drunk to vaugly enjoy them.

I think it must be an age thing when you see them, my brother and sister love the films cause they grew up watching them, while I love Indiana Jones as thats was my childhood films.

What age was everybody when they saw their 1st star wars film? I was 23.

I saw A New Hope when I was 4 or 5 way back in '77 when it first came out. I've loved Star Wars ever since and apparently it's wrong of me but I loved the prequels also. I saw Phantom Menace 8 times at the cinema. Darth Maul rocks!!! Posted Image :drinker2:

I thought the whole duel between Maul and the Jedi was epic. Probably the best of any of the lightsaber fight scenes in all the movies. I especially loved the final exchange between Maul and Obi-Wan just after Qui-Gon went down.
The thing I think I loved the most about the whole fight was that nobody said anything. It was nothing more than each side trying to destroy the other. No attempts to lure either over to the other side, just battle and death.

It was good, a bit like the old samurai films, were two masters let their fighting do the talking, but the way he died I was a bit miffed after the fight, but then the whole force thing isn't my cup of tea that and I wanted Maul to win.

I've just watched clone wars, why did noone tell me Christopher Lee was in it?!!?! I would have watched it yonks ago if I had have known.

Btw DarthJoe Love the pic!

Well of course I was going for Darth Maul but I knew that facing Obi Wan there was no way he could win.

That pic of Luke kind of looks like that maybe he turned to the Dark Side after all. Posted Image

We already have a SW/ST thread tailored for that purpose. However, if you wish to complain about anything else involving SW, that would be acceptable.

You're making a joke, right?
What was so special about that? Are you referring to the CGI, and fight choreography? Because the light saber scenes involving DM were totally uninteresting, and devoid of all emotion. I mean, why should we or anyone care? In The Phantom Menace, all we knew about Darth Maul is that we wore black robes, KISS makeup, and spoke secretly to someone who looked a lot like Satan. Unlike in the original SW film with Darth Vader, we never see Darth Maul say or do anything bad to make us loathe him as a villain. But when this guy finally confronts the Jedi, George Lucus expects us to feel emotionally charged about a character that we hardly know in the film? Again I ask, why should we care?

For the reasons I gave above, why? Yeah, there was a brief moment where Obi-Wan yelled out, and you thought he was going to lose it like Luke did in ROTJ, but he didn't.... It just went right back to the fancy fight choreography, and that was pretty much it. The only thing about that scene which I found ironic was at the very end of it. Remember when Obi-Wan fell over the edge and was hanging on by dear life, but somehow he managed to catapult (I know, the force) himself back up, and kill Darth Maul? Well, in Revenge of the Sith, a similar situation occurred when Anakin was standing on that floating segway at Mustafar, and he said, "I have the higher ground." Gee. I guess someone forgot to teach DM in his Sith training about how to point his light saber up in that situation.

It may have been a more interesting duel if DM had uttered something, even anything. Perhaps DM was mute? Boy! Something like that would really come in handy to a writer who had no clue as to how to write a descent dialogue in a script.

*sigh*

If you like people having chats in the middle of a fight scene then good for you. I like my action fast, hard and decisive. Always have, always will. Darth Maul provided just that.

Why should you care? Only you can answer that. Why do I care? It was the first major encounter between the Sith and the Jedi for perhaps a thousand years. And what did they do when they met? What any mortal enemies are likely to do. Simply destroy each other. I love that sort of stuff. I love characters that are all business. That's why I like characters like Maul and Boba Fett.

I myself also am a huge fan of the whole force/chi/ki concept & the swordsmanship (or weaponmastery) of the Jedi & Sith. It makes for a very interesting space opera besides laser blasters & explosions. That being said, I also have to ally myself with you SWAT. While no major villiany did happen involving Darth Maul, there is something beautiful about silence in battle where it isn't about how fast of lip & wit you are, but how precisely you have honed your skill of arms. It was very much like classical kensai (sword saints) battling & letting the technique & florishes speak louder than any banter they could've spouted.

I am an action junkie, martial arts enthusiasts & former practitioner, creative writer & illustrator, & just really enjoy a great combat sequence that is presented. Having grown up with Star Wars, I only disliked the Jar Jar Binks character & found that it was that creature that ruined my experience with the 1 - 3 episodes. I don't really see why besides some annoying CG creatures how those episodes was such a let down to people & fans. I enjoy the movies for what they are worth, & they are not terrible at all. Hell I sat through worse zombie films & even tried to justify why I shouldn't smash the DVDs.

F^ck a mind trick! Less chatting & more light sabers! That is the way of the force damn it! Also we need more General Grievous battling like he did on the animated mini series of Clone Wars that was on the Cartoon Network before the CG series was released!

+1 on being an action junkie. :kenny: :ninja:

Some of my favourite movie characters have been some of the most taciturn. Deadly, little Miho in Sin City, who never says a word, and Ogami Itto from Lone Wolf and Cub, just to name a couple off the top of my head. Two characters who were also no nonsense types and didn't muck about in a fight.
I think you hit the nail on the head with the comparison to the classical kensai. The banter happened before and possibly after the fight. When it's on, it's on and that's what I loved about Darth Maul, his focus and intensity. One of the things I learned through martial arts was that you're either in or you're out. If you're out then get out of there as fast as you can, if you're in then go until there's no more threat. Even the quick exchange in the desert between Qui-Gon and Maul was great for those reasons. Maul had a target and he went for them. Qui-Gon saw an opening and took it to escape when he leapt onto the ship. Straight to the point. On mission; make it to Coruscant for Qui-Gon and kill the Jedi for Maul. No need to talk about it. Just get on with why you're there.

Mentioning manga like LoneWolf & Cub? Excellent! & Yes, you are 100% correct, exchange of idle threats & wit happens before or after the battles. Another no nonsense kinda warrior is Guts (Gattsu) from the Berserk series, who says talking during a fight is pointless, during a scene versus Griffith when they first met. Movies like Hero (Jet Li) show how martial arts is just as much a mind game !s it is about power & prowess. A chess battle waged in thought with Donnie Yuen produced a victor & some awesome fight scenes that was silent wxcept zither music olaying during the rain storm. So much of the force & Jedi/Sith lore comes from our very own martial arts inspired genre. Lucas even admitted Darth Vadars helmet design was Japanese based in concept.

SWAT you have your own pluses coming dude! LOL!

Then why spend millions of dollars, waste studio resources, and time creating something that could be easily done in a video game? The goal in every writer's, director's and producer's mind is to make a good movie. The keys in making a good movie are THE STORY, THE CHARACTERS, THE ACTING, and THE DIALOGUE.
Why should you care? Only you can answer that.
This statement you made totally makes no sense whatsoever, and I'm not going to try to analyze it because you go on and answer it anyway. :duh:
Why do I care? It was the first major encounter between the Sith and the Jedi for perhaps a thousand years.
That's cute factoid but there a lot of empty space here. It's just a statistic and nothing more. We the audience don't see the the history or the journey the Jedi took over that thousand years, so again I ask, "why should we care?"
Btw... I could be wrong, but wasn't it a thousand generations, and not years? There is a huge difference but then again it just another trivial number.
And what did they do when they met? What any mortal enemies are likely to do. Simply destroy each other.
Just like in a video game right? At least in a video game you participate in the unfolding events. Sorry but I couldn't sit still for more than 5 minutes watching someone else playing a video game.
I myself also am a huge fan of the whole force/chi/ki concept & the swordsmanship (or weaponmastery) of the Jedi & Sith. It makes for a very interesting space opera besides laser blasters & explosions.
That just adds a little ambiance to the scene, but it's no substitute for good story writing, character development, and dialogue.
While no major villiany did happen involving Darth Maul, there is something beautiful about silence in battle where it isn't about how fast of lip & wit you are, but how precisely you have honed your skill of arms. No you're right, because then the audience might get emotionally involved in the interaction between the two characters. Besides the lack of dialogue, you should have included character development, and motivation. Couldn't the emotional charge that you received from watching this scene be better satisfied from playing a video game? At least you would have varying outcomes.
I don't really see why besides some annoying CG creatures how those episodes was such a let down to people & fans.
Do I have to keep pounding home the the same speech over, and over again? People really don't give a damn about CG monsters, and effects as they do about the characters, and the story. Compared to the last 3 SW films, explain how GL got away with his first three movies with relatively little or no CGI?
I enjoy the movies for what they are worth, & they are not terrible at all. Hell I sat through worse zombie films & even tried to justify why I shouldn't smash the DVDs.
The comparison is not even remotely close. That would be like comparing the New York Yankees to a pee wee baseball team. How much would you say the average movie budget for a Zed film compares to that of any of the SW films?
The banter happened before and possibly after the fight.
More video game, video game, video game nonsense.... If not a verbal exchange during the duel then how about the Darth Maul himself? Who is he? What is he? What are his origins? What's his motivation for hating the Jedi? What was his motivation for join the the Sith? What's his connection with Palatine? What changed in his life to make him want to join the dark side? Perhaps if he said something during his confrontations with the Jedi, we (the audience) would have gained more information. Hmmm I guess that's the writer's fault, don't cha think?
Lucas even admitted Darth Vadars helmet design was Japanese based in concept.
Yeah, I guess the whole SW trilogy would have been a better off if DV said totally nothing at all. GL could have saved himself a bundle of money if we would have cut loose James Earl Jones from the very beginning.
