What are some of the things you hate to see in horror films?

For example:

I hate it when someone has to go piss and then walk like a mile out into the woods only to be stalked and killed when all you gotta do is open up your car door and take a whiz right there.

I hate it when someone knocks on the door and the person says "who is it, who is it" and yet they still open up the damn door to get killed, jeesh.

I can't stand really atrocious acting.....even though I do love corny slashers like Splatter University and Pieces but I'm talking about really atrocious acting like in say the films Splatter Farm, Alien Dead, Scalps, Oasis of the Zombies, The Last Slumber Party, etc.... where the actors seem to be reading from cue cards with no emotion lol.

Those are just a few things off the top of my head now. I will think of others later this weekend.

So what are your dislikes in horror movies?

CGI

I can deal with everything else (aside from animal cruelty) But cgi is killing my interest in new horror films. If the filmmakers are too lazy to create on set effects, I'm not watching anymore. I'm tired of it.

I totally agree with CGI! I might also add:

Jump Scares - If it's only a few times in the movie, it's alright. However, a lot of horror films nowadays rely almost entirely on this!
The Token Stereotype - Especially if it's the black guy who assumes every white guy is racist. Seriously, I've seen this enough times to know it's not funny or creative!
Walking backwards - Has ANYONE in a horror movie ever walked backwards and NOT get killed for it?!?
Any American remake of a Japanese horror film - Nuff said
and PG13 horror films - Seriously, the goriest PG13 movie I ever saw was Cast Away!

I hate animal cruelty too especially in the cannibal 70's films.

Along the lines of the CGI and the Jump scenes, I'm tired of horror movies that don't try to actually be scary.
Nowadays they seem to rely on insane ammounts of gore to try to make the movie scary.
I'm looking at you, SAW I-XCIX [Seriously, how many of those are they going to make? haha]

I do love gore though in films.

I agree about some new films not being scary. I love creating gore, but atmosphere and genuine scares are more important.

I appreciate your films greatlly Brian and I'm not being sarcastic lol cause I know CGI costs $$$$$ but I love it that you wanna do "your" own makeup effects and gore in films just like the ole days and I wish hollywood or indie people would go back to making films that way with "real" makep effects artists like you and Savini and Nicotero, etc......

The other day I searched for examples of forced perspective on youtube and found an episode of Movie Magic that used to play on The Discovery Channel. That reminded me of how fun it was to watch movies and see how they were made.
There is hardly any magic left anymore. It's just some guy behind a computer.

I hate continuity mistakes. One of the worse mistakes in film making. Also the screwups like out in the middle of nowhere and you see a car drive by in the background. DUH! Your empty your weapons, it locks back then all of a sudden it's ready to go again? You've already been attacked, you're entering another room/building and then load/cock the weapon? Most hated....check that safety on your glock....then a "click"???

I hate "documentary" style horror films like The Blair Witch Project, Quarentine, Diary of The Dead, Cloverfield, etc.

CGI....practical FX are amazing. Id rather have a bad practical effect then a bad CG one.

A part where its a stressful situation...and the woman who previously was useless decides to do something good..then the male characters all look at her with the "I know you had it in you look"

Stupidity. I hate stupid movies. I like some research to go into the movie, some realism. I like sitting there thinking, "wow, that could happen", or "wow, what if that happened". Yes, even in my zombie movies I like realism.

I thought that when these films were becoming mainstream that they breathed a new lilfe into the genre, but it too has become too overdone. Blair Witch was good as well as Diary. Never saw Cloverfield because I can't stand J.J. Abrams. My greatest dislike is the overdone slasher-type formula. Even with the rebooted Friday the 13th it did not stray away from the same formula that killed the franchise in the first place. Killer kills some people, the rest of the group figures it out, more people get killed and then the killer gets killed. I hate movies that have shallow plots and hardly any (if any at all) character development for either the protagonist(s) and/or antagonist(s).

Showing the monster/murderer/whatever too often, which usually goes hand-in-hand with the CGI complaint. You can't fear the unknown if you see it every five seconds.

Yup, but also how the movie gives a stupid reason for the people not being able to escape like tripping and falling over, and the car won't start.

I don't like stupid teens in films. There's good teen films like the first Scream.....btw, I mean teens in films like that the characters are teens in them not teh actors cause generally the actors who play them are in their mid to late 20's lol.

How about incoherent/boring plots? The movie "Fear dot com" comes to mind. One of the worst I've ever seen.
