Let's say that you're on walking down the road during a zombie apocalypse, and you come across an adorable pet dog... but it doesn't look as if it's been infected. It seems to be very tired, hungry, and dirty. You walk up slowly to it, and reach your hand out to pat it, and it lowers it's head down because it's scared and doesn't know what to do. You manage to pat it on it's head, and it looks up at you and licks you on your cheek. You smile, but then start thinking to yourself...

You have food in your backpack, but it could run out very soon, so you think about taking the puppy and killing it for food. But then, you think about just keeping the poor little puppy, sharing your food with it, and taking him with you so that you'll have a nice little buddy by your side. And then another thought comes up... 'this dog doesn't look as if it's been bitten by a zombie, but it COULD have been bitten by an infected mosquito.'

There are many things to consider, but what would you do in this scenario?

If mosquitoes can carry the infection then mankind would be wiped out during a nice hot summer.

I would try to keep it. Puppies wouldn't require as much food as humans, so it's not like it would drasticly shorten my food supply. Plus, a dog could be a good asset to have to indicate if zombies are nearby (like in World War Z), or even to call for help if I'm in trouble.

I'd probably join the dog, 'cuz if mosquitos carry the infection then we're all screwed.

The dog is not infected. Mosquitoes are not infected. If the infection were that capable of crossing species, there would be no survivors. Nobody goes their whole life without getting bit by *something.*

I would probably eat one of those dumb little rodent dogs if I were starving. If I still had food, I'd let such a dog go. If it were a breed that makes a good hunting, guard, or other utility dog I would raise and train it.

you sure about that? a dog fed on a raw meat deit needs to eat between 2.5%-3% of its own body weight a day. so my 65lb dog is eating around 2lbs of meat a day. and he isn't a particuarly big dog. small puppies soon grow in to big dogs.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Aaawww, come here pup, I'll feed you, give you a name and cherish you for the rest of our short exsistence while zombies chase us down and eat us both.
I'd take the dog. Period.

Lets see. "Awww a cute little puppy. Your so cuddly." I would take it if I was getting lonely but I've never been to much of a dog person so I would probably leave it. Then it's the dogs choice if it wants to follow me. If its a chiuaua then I might use it for food like the Aztecs did.

Tell them King Rat. If you raise a dog on meat alone it's going to be real hard to train them to eatting Kibbles n' Bits. A dog eats, especially a big one.

Never had a dog as a pet before, so I wouldn't really be the best at training it or taking care of it, but I'd still try to get it to come with me. I mean, it would be better than just leaving it on its own, wouldn't it? I feed it and give it shelter, and it could help by watching for any dangers/keeping me company/become a possible food source if it ever came to that. Not saying I'd just up and kill a dog, but if my life depended on it and there was no other food, then i guess I'd have to.

True enough but if you had a dog as your boon companion for a length of time that would be your last resort before starving to death.
Some people would resort to cannibalism before eating their four legged companion.

Cannibalism does have advantages. After all I do have a dog to track them with. :zombie4:

What Bob said. I've heard that during turmoils times people eating OTHER people's pets. The accounts of anyone eating their own pets is probably extremely limited.

I'd take the dog if it wasn't one of those toy breed chihuahua poodle thingies.
