I'm not a big collector on them but I know alot of people are.

I have a really nice 8" knife with serated edges on top and brass knuckles on it that I bought like 10 years ago and it's bad ass. If you have ever seen the Slyvester Stallone film called Cobra where the killer has the knife it is very similiar to it.

I have a 22" inch type machete sword but it's not your normal looking machete. It's very slender from the neck but widens up to the top if you know what I am talking about. I bought it too many years ago cheap at a flea market.

I have a wierd looking scythe type knife but it's from the 80's.

I have an Old Timer little knife from boy scouts too lol.

So what knives or swords do you own?

I own several sharp stabby things. At one time I carried no less than four at once. I do have a few favorites. One is my old Gerber Mk. I boot knife. The other is my CRKT M16 which is my daily carry knife.

You know, we're doing a medieval theme for my father's 60th this year, any chance I could borrow one of those?

And leaving out the 'made in China' and other display ones here's my knives:

Again, just camera phone quality. My tanto I bought at a swap meet a few years ago, the machete that's mainly used for yard work -not like there's any other uses for it yet-, and the Ka-Bar I bought at the end of year sales after last Christmas.

On a "Dirty Jobs" that I watched recently, one of the guys had a machete with a hooked blade. What was interesting was that there was a guard that protected his hand from the spikes on the palm tree. That would come in handy of Z day.

He was using it to clear off the weaker layer of bark so his boot spikes could get purchase as he climbed up the tree so he could chop it down and there were bees in that tree.
You get like a five second glimpse of it as he is busy whacking away with it, but I think that is the one you are talking about.

Funny thing, my smaller knives cost way more than my larger ones.
CRKT M1-13K clip folder
Benchmade 910 clip folder
SPEC PLUS AF survival knife 5.5 in blade
don't know what it's called... Gerber fixed 5 in blade (very wide blade) rubberized kraton handle. Got it new at a gun show $30
and of course my Gerber Camp Axe, love the thing.

Anybody familiar with MOD knives?

if you have to destroy the brain, or remove the head to kill a Zombie, then I don't really see how a knife is going to help you that much. I suppose you could stab a z through the skull but that wouldn't be that easy and it would probably be easier to do with a screwdriver or a chisel. a longer blade may seem better but to cut well with a sword (particularly a straight bladed one) takes practise, getting the edge alignment, and the mechanics of cutting with a sword Z, even cut one in two. but while its would be possible to disable one Z, I think it would be difficult with multiple targets.

Really fighting a zombie close quarters with a knife or sword isn't going to be a picnic. I don't even think it's worth the risk to try and go in for a kill shot on one. Sure it's possible I suppose, but really to have a weapon that would be able to consistently and easily destroy the skull it's going to be so heavy and unwieldy that your going to tire out far sooner than using the weapon would be worth. Especially considering the risk involved by getting that up close and friendly with a zombie. I'd much rather go for blows to disable the zombie and leave it be and move on rather than actually trying to kill it. Hamstrings, tendons, biceps, aim for blows to cripple it's limbs and then when it's flopping around helplessly maybe you can go back around with a sledge hammer or something to try and bust some skulls open. A hatchet or a tomahawk with a spike on it maybe. Just like actual sword fighting I think mobility is going to be a far more important skill than the ability to cleave a skull in two.

insanely expensive for what you get. Cool looking and well made, granted, but spendy.
In my mind, a knife is a tool. Tools get lost, broken, borrowed, stolen...
I LOVE knives, don't get me wrong, I own more than a few, and usually have more than one on my person at any given time. The vast majority of my blades are very high quality, but I just don't ever see myself spending $300 on one. Not when a $70-$100 blade is going to do everything that the Gucci knife will do. That, and I won't cry, (at least not too much), when something crappy happens to it.

One of my favorite EDC knives is a generic copy of those Winchester generic swiss army style knives. It was literally a free "gift" for filling out a survey on Copenhagen's web site.

The way I see it, if it cuts, it's good.

What if your knife breaks in the skull of one zombie and you got another dozen coming? Your in a stairwell, hallway, small room, etc where there isn't a lot of room for swinging anything meant to maim or kill a normal human being, were as a zombie won't die if you severe the throat.

I know next to nothing about edged weapons. I own some utilitarian folders and a bunch of bayonets (from my C&R craze). Could stand to learn more about their use.

Have read here and elsewhere that a sword would be more dangerous to the user if not trained. I can see that fighting people, but if one was dealing with (slow) undead, how much skill might one really need?

Imagine this: You've just decapitated a couple zombies that were in the street you needed to cross. You put one hand on the sheath as you sheathe the sword, whoops, you've just nicked your hand. In a few minutes the scratch starts to itch, then burn. Well, better luck in your next life.
