You'll find the same with just about any stock GI 1911. Install some new sights, fix the trigger (which isn't bad for a stock gun)....Some light mods would make it into a real tack driver. On the problem with lighter loads? Polish the feed ramp. That should solve the problem. Just make sure you use GI mags with the flat follower. Anything else gave my Norc severe indigestion.

What side arm would you take?

good info, thanks. i will look at the ramp and see if i can make it pretty. i swapped out the barrel bushing figuring its an easy place to start, it helped really well for what is involved lol.

Picked up the 642 yesterday. Lighter than I had expected. Not thrilled with the trigger. Hopefully it will smooth out with use.
Is it okay to dry fire these w/o nap caps? Can I use empty brass or should I wait until I get some snap caps? Used to dry fire the stink out of my S&W19, but I also broke the hammer.

I used to dryfire my SP101 all the time . it helped smooth it up some and built up my hand strength .

Even though i live in the UK i would love to use an 1873 single action army revolver :P call me old fashioned but i love the weapon lol! 20 zombies on me = 5 zombies dead and 1 bullet for me hehe

You haven't seen enough zombie movies. You aim your shots so the bullet will kill multiple zombies with one shot!
If they ban guns, how will I fight the zombies?

most of the standard 1911A1 pattern guns liked the Chip McCormick shooting star mags.

When I posted the comment about a ramp job I almost mentioned throating.
A 1911 barrel on a series 70 Colt needs to be throated and ramped.
I did not say it then to avoid the snickering.
When did throating become a sexual term?
What type of holster would you use to carry your sidearm?
In the ZPAW concealment would for the most part not matter.

Good question. I'd probably stick with my belt holster. I'm so used to carrying in a pancake style that anything else would feel out of place.

I have a handful of non concealment holsters. A G&G G17/22 retention holster, a no-name open top leather holster for G17/22. Also a couple generic flap holsters that will fit most any full size handgun. Any of these would do me fine.

Been using a SERPA in competition for a while now. Very secure and durable.
I know it's a little mall ninja of me but I prefer a thigh rig. I usually have lots of junk on my belt: Leatherman, fixed blade knife, mags, etc. and having the pistol off of the belt just works for me...
I also always kind of feel like Han Solo with the pistol slung low like that...yeah, definitely mall ninja...

What's with the Serpa? I've read there are a lot of complaints about the lock design. Several top instructors and schools, like Vickers, Gunsite, VTAC...., refuse to allow students to use them in classes citing a danger with the lock. According to them the lock sometimes refuses to disengage and using the trigger finger to unlock tends to put that finger in a poistion to grab the trigger early. You don't use the drop leg in competition do you?

I have heard and read about possible safety issues with the Serpa, never experienced one personally or know of one other than internet urban legends...I am sure those trainers and instructors know what they are doing and have sound reasons for making the decisions they do...I have been using mine now for almost 5 years now and I really like it. Put it through a lot of different conditions from snow and ice to fine blowing desert sand and it always works.
I only use the drop leg when it is allowed. Which it often times is not. That is one of the reasons I like the Serpa so much; it can go from a thigh mount to a belt to a paddle with the turn of a couple of screws.

Tex did a good job on that , in that he didn't throw the gun down or pass out . He also calles it correctly that it was an ND and not an AD . I couldn't imagine a much better place to be shot with a .45 and have a through and through wound track that long .
He also had a good technique for doing a draw at that range and speed , just needed to start over from square one when he changed holsters . Confidance builds complacency , which he mentions .
