We've pretty much flogged every other dead horse into oblivion, but I've never heard any talk about first aid kits. There's the sexy part of disaster survival and preparation, which most here are familiar with, and then there's the stuff that is essential for survival following an emergency and not as cool; medical supplies being one of them. What do you guys keep in your jump kits as far as disaster medical goes?

I keep a separate trauma kit for the home, car, and recreational outings, but they usually have some pretty standard stuff in it.

All Kits:
- 2", 4"ACE bandages
- 2", 4" Kerlix bandages
- 4x4's
- 2x2's
- triangle bandages
- surgical tape
- SAM splint(s)
- band-aids of various shapes and sizes
- alcohol wipes
- small bottle of PVPI
- petroleum gauze
- 60cc irrigation syringe
- Burn-Jel packets
- Cold Pack(s)
- CPR mask
- stethoscope
- EMT shears
- flashlight
- space blanket
- BSI

Home Kit:
- C-collar
- head blocks
- Oral glucose
- tongue depressors
- BP cuff
- Cardboard
- OPA's and NPA's
- duct tape
- blankets

Car Kit:
same as home, minus the headbed and cardboard for splinting.

Wilderness Kit:
- Tegaderm a few small, a few large
- moleskin or second skin blister dressings
- headlamp

ETA:
- CAT tourniquets
- Israeli trauma bandages
- NaCl for irrigation
- Large animal syringes (with the right sized NPA, these are good for suction and at a fraction of the cost of a suction device)
- Large trauma dressing
- Abdominal pads

I'll add more as I remember.

The Expendables was a mix of all men and women. I saw, what must have been an 80 year old woman, get really into it. She left with her own set of testicles.

We got a pretty standard home medical kit here, bandaids, burn gel, bandages, alcohol gel, etc. But in a zombie invasion i think it may be wise to put some kind of small but powerful handgun in there. You know... Just in case ;-)

I had a first aid kit at one point. I've pretty much used half of it up though.

My friends are those of the "nothing bad will ever happen to anyone, ever" type and actually call me weird because in my room I have a first aid kit, several gallon jugs of water, a bunch of bags of rice, and a propane stove. It pisses me off; if they want to be completely unprepared for disaster than so be it but don't fckin call me weird because of a few extremely minor preparations.

I got a basic front-line army med pack in the closet that I haven't touched yet for a just in case scenario. As for the one on the wall in the bathroom that I actually use I think it's got a fifth of jack, a pack of smokes, box of band aids and some allergy medication.

You should probably try to conceal it. Because, the second anything does happen you know who's door will be knocked on? That's right, the "wierdos." I have a few friends who know that I have some shit like that, and firearms, but they are a few and have been friends since I was like three.

Well, some of us are a whole lot older than that. I think Bob might have actually fought in the civil war

Well if they expect Bob to take them in they better be female with "skills".

Was that a sexist remark?

I am just kidding anyway.

I doubt that the issue would be them. It would be the others that they've also told. I know it sounds really ****ed, but you've got to establish some sort of criterion for this shit :scare:

If they showed up after alien zombies started to butt**** cities, then they already knew enough to get that far, right?

I noticed that nobody has this in their kits but it is sometimes extremely important!

A tourniquet, like the thing that you wrap around a limb to slow blood flow and prevent excess blood loss in a short amount of time. These can usually be improvised by a belt or plastic "riot cuff" style ties but it never hurts to have one ready.

With gunshot wounds, deep punctures, amputations ect the use of a tourniquet can help you preserve your blood, not go into shock and not bleed out

No. I was a 15Q. Trained as a Combat Lifesaver though and used the bag in a couple of mascals downrange. I used to carry normal saline and LR also, but just haven't restocked it in the bag. I want to get at least one more SAM splint for the kit and a CPR mask.

68W is the military occupational skill (MOS) identifier for Healthcare Specialist better known as a combat medic.

The bad news is I wouldn't know how to use any of that stuff. The good news is that means I have an excuse not to carry it all around with me.

Medical knowledge is always great to have. Apocalypse or not, there are a myriad of advantages to having even just the most rudimentary emergency skills. Boo-boos with the kids, strained ankles, minor stuff; stuff that Dr. Mom or Dr. Dad could really save the day with. Also really great to know how to stabilize major trauma till the big boys get there.

While it probably wouldn't be practical for people to go to EMT school if they aren't pursuing a career in that field, I think it would be beneficial for everyone to take a First Aid or First Responder class. Lot's of great information to be had there!
