I don't know if this has been done before.
So I would think that knowing at least basic mechanics would come in handy during these such times.
What are certain tricks you've learned about cars and trucks that you feel would make a difference?

Not sure if it'd be allowed here, but I have a picture explaining how to hotwire a car.

You got to remember that newer cars with all the electronic BS have anti-theft crap that prevents something like that and all vehicles are different.

Hm....well maybe I'll just stuff a log through the sun roof, attach a sail and put it in neutral. Little bit of rope I could even manipulate the sail from the drivers seat. Get across the Kansas and the rest of the great plains at record speed. ^.^

I think that in an outbreak, manual transmission would be especially helpful because of not having to start it just by the key. Last year, I had a bad run with my electronics draining my battery, so I had to pop-start it multiple times. I really don't think that would be great against fast zombies (unless they pushed the car), but it could still be a lifesaver if you're on top of a hill.

I've never heard of a car that has alarms for opening the hood.
You must not know much about cars to think that it'd matter.

I've learned that no amount of fixing your car will clear a blocked road and that shoes don't break down, run out of gas, or need an oil change.
