Would sewers be a good place to be in a zombie world?

The area is narrow so you could close off an area around an access point (ladder into sewer) as your main base. Then you would have access to pretty much the entire city from bellow. There would be barely any zombies down there because
A they have no reason to be there (no food)
B There are few places to get in and all require cognitive motor skills and a tool like a crowbar to open

Supplies can be grabbed from the surface and brought bellow, if the way isn't clear move to another spot.

The temperature would stay consistent thorought the year just like an animal's burrow so seasonal changes in milder areas would barely be noticed

I know that people say stay away from subways always but this is different because Z's have no easy access, sewers are pretty much designed so that people can't get in unless they have the will and intent to lift a heavy lid

last bone to pick...why in world war Z, during the interview with the mercenary, was there a zombie hand that reached out of the sewers? the rest of the book is gritty and realistic and then that just seems like some terrible B-movie scene. What would a zombie be doing in the sewers in the early stages and how did a zombie pull a man through a storm drain? it just doesn't make sense anymore

sewers are filthy and disease riddled i dont think thats a place you would wanna be when there arent any hospitals or medicine. plus what happens in a heavy rain? where does all that water go?
it might work for an escape out of the city but you'd have to know where to go and those things are mazes.

Sewers tend to have a build up of explosive and POISONOUS gases

I have to agree with the above posts about sewers being a big no-no. Why would you want to hide in a place filled with feces and rats? Plus you would have to worry about whether or not the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles got zombified.

Actually, lots of people live and thrive in the sewers of major cities. I've seen entire "towns" down there.

EDIT: I find that worrying about diseases in a sewer when the dead are walking around kinda funny.

i guess it would depend on wether it was "storm drains" or "actual raw sewage drains".

The addition of a new threat does not invalidate an old one.

Most sewer lines are encased in some type of pipe per code, they run along access tunnels so workers can get to them so you shouldnt get any :poo: on you, plus with no water running people will not be flushing much. Storm drains are seperate, or at least they are here in this part California.

 True, true, very true, but...I think it might be safer to travel underground in a city which was crawling with the living dead. Assuming that I had a flash light of course. :scare:

I saw on the news not to long ago, some workers opened a manhole cover and one of them passed out from the gases. He fell in and was killed, some of the firefighters that tried to save him got sick aswell. I have never been in a sewer myself, but I don't think they will be the same as they are on TV.

what about metro tunnels? there like sewers cept without the :poo: and plus there are maps and guides which make them easier to navigate and their also easily defendable. plus their are tons of stations where you could barricade the ground access and live there!

The only thing is that metro tunnels are meant to be accessed in normal life. They are designed to have large entrances to accomodate thousands of people miving in and out daily. So even if one of the security doors didn't close then you have a huge entrance to block

As for the statement of Z's falling in open manholes, that would happen so rarely and the sewers are so expansive that you wouldn't see one even if there were some down there. When was the last time you even saw an open manhole?

Sewers do not have rivers of poo-poo-pankakes flowing through them like in cartoons, the raw sewage is usually encased in waste pipes and the sewer itself is there for workers to move around and service them.

Maybe this wouldn't work everywhere but in Winnipeg it definatly would because we have a sewer system in good condition, there is next to no threat of gasses, and our rainfall is rarely enough to fill up the sewer, only in April/May do we get heavy rain.

Even then, there are different types of tunnels for different uses, even when the sewers flood in Wpg like twice a year, they have separate matinance tunnels so workers can continue to work.

Maybe the sewer could be a seasonal home? I guess it's on the waterfront

Spooky. I was thinking about this very thing just recently. Well sort of. We have storm drains that go throughout the town and I was wondering about how good they might potentially be to get around relatively undetected. The main problem is being able to get to one of the access points, lift the concrete covering off, then get in there and replace the cover without being seen or heard. But once in there, if you can manage the fairly cramped space, you could get around pretty safely I think. Being the large, cumbersome cave troll I am I'd probably have a tough time of it but someone not so cave trollish might fair pretty well down there. You know, unless it suddenly rains really heavily and they drown.

as far as i know, sewers are generally tight fits but then they occasionally open up in certain areas
