Very true Rowdy. Terrain is also a factor in what you wanna wear. What are you walking over? I wouldn't wanna walk around in the hills around here in my adidas, I'd be wearing my boots. Alternatively, if you're in an urban setting and that's where you've carved out your niche, then you could get away with wearing your shoes. Or even if you're in an area where the hills aren't so beastly, or somewhere where it's not really wet(like my home state) then you can deal with shoes and wouldn't necessarily need boots. If you're the team scout, and go ahead to scope out the area ahead, you'd probably wanna travel light and so heavy duty boots are probably not ideal.

I use on a daily basis Altberg Aqua boots, British made and have proven to be warm, dry comfortable and light in all conditions, I am well pleased, especially as my employer provides them for free!

See link for image:

My employer has just supplied us with German boots by Haix, only had them a couple of weeks, comfortable but am reserving judgement as they haven't been thoroughly tested yet. See link:

Privately I have purchased a pair of Matterhorn boots, also extremley good, see link:

Personally I would always wear good, solid, leather boots for support and protection. Most modern boots do not weigh that much and do not restrict mobility, otherwise why would the military still use them?

Cheers

Wyvern youre right about the military boots. I have two pairs, both are rather light, but Id probably take the slightly sturdier ones over the lightest pair.

I get a new pair of Lowas about every three years. That gives me two years to enjoy them an a year to get comfy in a new pair. I also keep some merrel running shoes for somethings. Pt shoes a must. I also get carpet samples and take my old lowas and trace out a shoe print. I then pull the soles off the boots and glue the carpet cut outs on for sneaky stuff. Pro tip have a rigger sew a piece of steel in some nylon for your carpet bottoms...

I've got a couple of different pairs of steel toes I'll be debating between when the SHTF.. One is weather proof and water resistant, the other is a more durable design and better for azz kickin lol
I may carry a pair of my adidas classic all stars for comfort when I'm hunkered down but I don't think I would be caught dead without a steel toe

Veldro, Im not so sure about that. The Bates lights that are common here wear out pretty quick. My Belleville boots are much sturdier.

Those do look pretty sweet. Which style do you have? Their website has so many different models, it's difficult to choose one!

The ones they issued me in boot camp. I wouldnt recommend buying a pair if youre not in the Marines, they have an EGA on the side, and some consider it disrespectful to wear it. Civilians arent supposed to wear our uniforms anyway, we're not even allowed to wear our cammies out in town. Not that I'd want to but it isnt authorized.

This is what they used to look like before I beat the ever loving piss outta them.

Leaving the respect issues aside, would you recommend them though? Are they comfortable and durable?

I like em, but my other pair are actually my preferred boots and probably the ones Im taking to Aghan. I wear em out in the field all the time so theyre well broken in.

Alright, so if getting your hands on a pair of USMC boots isn't adviseable, what would you recommend for the civilian?

Bates. They make all kinds of good boots for pretty much everyone.
