Adaptability isn't in the choices, but it's good that you're thinking outside the box. Both of the choices have adaptability as part of their make up. Being the strongest would have that person already physically prepared to face the situation. Being the smartest helps adapt to changing situations or change the situations to adapt to them. The ones that can best adapt would have a combination of both strength and smarts.

Adaptability and personal initiative are two damn good tools to have in your "keeps me the f**k alive box".

I hear ya Vorp/ Just that as a former combat Marine, I already have a very good mixture of fitness & combat smarts, but as we are taught since bootcamp, the hall mark of the corps has always been our ability to adapt, overcome & improvise in any & all situations.
The Army has always gotten all the good stuff before we do & after a few yrs, they pass it down to us while they get a new set of toys to play with.

Adaptability may not require great fitness or macguyver-like innovation. If you can attach yourself to a fighter, you can focus on making decisions. If you can protect the one who keeps you alive, you can continue to use their smarts.
Alone, you will have to be able to evade, finesse, and destroy enemies, procure resources, and be in charge of watching your own ass. Without help, life will be nasty and brutish. If you lack the appropriate ability to meet the challenge, it will be short.
Another way to look at it, is adopting an apt strategy for you. Finding a niche. If you can kill a buncha zeds but can't make a friend, you won't have access to their abilities.
A bear doesn't need to hide from an enemy if he can absorb enough bullets to get close and maul them. A swift humming bird needs no durable form or lethal attack. Bees have lots of back up but no brains or brawn.
What is the most important trait?
Obviously, bees would lose world war Z if z's ate b's.
But a bear would do well to bug in, a bird to bug out. Dig?
Brawn is more important to a fortify scenario, brains in a nomadic lifestyle.

Also how exactly does being big help you? You need more food/water, you can't go over precarious structures or fit through small holes that someone of smaller stature might be able to and it's much harder for you to hide or be hidden. Just because someone is not "big" that does not mean they are weak or frail.
My friends father is a veteran of the Falklands war and he said that when they had to march across the island in full gear (50+ miles 30+kg) it was the body-builder types who fell behind first and succumbed to the elements first suffering from frostbite, basically, those big guys became the first casualties of the group slowing them down considerably. The smaller kind of pudgy guys apparently fared much better and were able to carry more gear over longer distances when they split their packs.
Point is, big does not always mean strong.
As long as you have enough "brawn" to move when you need to and where you need to the rest is about your mental capacity for survival.

Im skinny, at 5'10" ,155 pounds, I dont have much weight to lose. But I have the advantage of knowing how far I can push myself from experience. I feel you need to be neither the strongest, or smartest. You just need to have the mental toughness to never quit in spite of the pain, misery and suffering. You wont survive alone because if you dont die, youll go mad more than likely. Have a buddy or a team, know their breaking points and push them when needed, but not too far.
