So basically "mental toughness" is the same as psychological resilience. I've read about it but didn't remember it until now since we didn't really study it (yes my uni was that bad). There should be enough APA articles about it in the redalyc databases I use to write a little primer on it.

Mental toughness is a lot harder to build than physical toughness but can be built in a similar way. That is by doing hard shit.

Bob, raising the tolerance for stupid to new levels.

I've always taken pride in the fact that I grew up and modeled myself after my grandpa, he is still one of my heroes, he's 65 and still working, he's actually my boss, I think that if you don't model yourself after, or are someone who is hard working as well as smart, then you should be kicked in the balls with steel toed boots until you are a person like this. I'll supply the boots and the kicking.

I aspire to work hard in everything I do, and I hate school because our education system is shit. That's what the Fuhrer should work on reforming, but enough of politics, the point is, that the French are fairly right about Americans, most of us are fat, lazy, and much of my generation is stupid as well as the former two. I hate having to agree with the French, it pisses me off.

A vast majority of this very same generation would fvcking die in a ZPAW, growing up on video games and poor education, and whatever the hell they all do has created an era of stupid.

Exactly this. Smarts will get you only so far, and tough will get you so far. But everyone will work for the man that has both. The first part of the above post is very rare... I Take Pride... That is not even a thing anymore. We are missing a young generation that takes pride in themselves and the things they do except for the military in many ways.

I have very few friends that are proud of anything. I hate seeing my generation fail so completely to make anything of themselves. Many of us that have are in the military or are like my girlfriend who is a 22 year old business woman and very successful for her age.

Well, some of us are a whole lot older than that. I think Bob might have actually fought in the civil war

on the origional topic of fitness v "smarts," i would say that it comepletely depends on the situation. there is no sure way of knowing.

as for the mental and physical toughness...

there is really no way of knowing how a person is going to react when the SHTF. i have seen "tough guys" refuse to go outside the wire in iraq because they were scared, and i have seen previously timid individuals take charge when all hell breaks lose. i do think that those who have seen bad things happen (fire, ems, police, military) will have an edge - we already have an idea if we are going to tend to freeze, panic, take charge, or take orders.

Brains will always outdo strength...zombies are very predictable, and being about to outsmart them and get the upper-hand will always ensure your survival.

I believe that initially its going to come down to those fit enough to run and hide and those smart enough to be ready for an..."emergency." I really enjoyed Zombieland for the number 1 rule: cardio. The fatties bought it first. Unfortunately that also means the fatties, the young, the old, the infirm. It means Dads and moms saddled with kids and grandpa who's on dialysis. Our society isn't ready for any type of mass emergency. Look at Katrina. Some people managed to stay in their homes and maintain their families. Many of these banded together as a neihborhood to stay safe. Then there were the masses. Lost, abusing or being abused. Packing themselves off to wherever they were told was safe. Some became predators, most were victims. I imgine it would be like that but a million times worse. So what can you do? Make sure you are prepared to handle a major emergency and that you and yours are fit and clever enough to run, hide and survive. Especially kids. Its bad enough to see these kids wandering off to school with their ear buds in, eyes on the ground, oblivious to anything going on around them. It staggers me everyday that they somehow make it across the street alive. Not to mention their utter disregard for anyone around them. Could you see todays teenagers trying to help some scared little kid during some mass emergency? Some. But they aren't the rule. Such is life...

Mental stress can be just as debilitating as physical stress. Even for someone who's physically fit, if they aren't mentally tough they stand a greater chance of failure in a PAW. Intelligence plays a big part in that.

So true. In a ZPAW, the amount of people who would commit suicide would be huge. Not to mention people in shock, or people getting really drunk, or high on drugs/medication. I think half of the people to survive the initial outbreak, (1-5 days) would die due to drug, alcohol, or mental conditions that put them in a lower state of awareness, thus making them 'ZED bait'.

Agreed. Mental preparation is probably the most important thing to consider. Though in all honesty it seems pretty difficult to mentally prepare yourself for the ZA...

True enough.
It's hard to prepare for a fictional event.
None of us really know how we would react.
I think our initial reaction is individually predictable but over time it would change.
Once the finality of the end of civilization set it you would change mentally.

I vote that a balance. An example is the Marine Infantry, we're made to be strong, but also to take initiative, think and react to our surroundings on am individual level as well as a fire team, squad, platoon or even higher to the Company level. Do what you need to in order to accomplish the mission and be physically tough enough to do it.
