I've seen a lot of people talk about what kind of weapon they want, and assault rifle was frequently mentioned, and I started thinking about how many types of assault rifles there are, and which ones would be most effective against zombies.

Since this is one of the most talked about of topics, I wanted to discuss the two forms of assault rifles today, the longer but more common traditional rifle design, or the newer and compacted bullpup. Here's a basic view of the most iconic rifles for both configurations, the Steyr AUG, and the classic M4 Carbine.

So you guys choose which one you would use and why.

I have never shot a rifle of the bullpup family before, but I like the compact design.

i have, triggers are usually not as good and balance is odd. some have parts availability problems. i prefer the standard layout, although i used to have a bushmaster m17 that was pretty fun. not sure about as a combat rifle as the mag changes were pretty clumsy and slower.

Well, some of us are a whole lot older than that. I think Bob might have actually fought in the civil war

I was shooting a bullpup AK yesterday at the shootingatoz.com Shootzenfest.
There were plenty of "Black Rifles" and tactical shotguns in evidence. Engaging multiple hostiles and just general blasting. The brass was flying! I am a bit stove up today, I am just not as young as I used to be.

My new 20 round twelve gauge drum worked perfectly.
Can we say major lead delivery system.
Joe the hunter dude got mad and left, there is just something about two guys seeing who can empty a 20 round drum of gauge the fastest that messes with your concentration.

To get back to the bullpup, the trigger was very looooooong not all that heavy but very different.

I only fired a bullpup one time a long time ago, it was fairly accurate, but uncomfortable to operate and clumsy to assume and use any position other than offhand. The back-heavy balance actually helped me with long-range slow fire in the offhand position, but multiple target aquisition was hampered by this, the muzzle doesn't swing smooth to the target.

With time and practice you can get pretty handy with a bullpup, but it's something to get used to, to be sure.

I prefer the traditional format, simply because they're the only ones I've ever shot. I've heard that they take some getting used to, but once you do, they're good.

It seems that they'd be good for CQC, wasn't that the original intention?

The place for a bullpup would indeed be up close.
Clearing a bld it would surpass a conventional weapon.
The average rifle is pretty long, it's like walking with a baseball bat held in front of you. Lots of area for a zed to grab a hold on. I like short weapons that are held close to the body. Less for them to get a hold on if they surprise you.
If you have a long arm try clearing your house with it, then try clearing the same house with a carbine length one, then a pistol.
If you have none of the above, use a broom or mop handle, you can cut it down to simulate the various lengths. Just don't cut down your moms new broom or she might use whats left on you...

I found bullpups to be a bit unwieldy, heavy in the back, light in the front, making it harder to stay on target. That could be simply a training issue. I also worry about that really long trigger group. I know the Brits had fits with them breaking and binding at the wrong time. I also never liked the idea of having the bolt banging away right beside my head. The M4 is a nice weapon for house clearing. Just about the right size actually. The flash supressor can always be used to thump someone between the eyes causing a distraction if the barrel is grabbed, then simply pull the trigger. There's an entire manual of arms that can be used for gun grabbing defense.

The P90 and Chicago Typewriter/Tommy Gun are both submachine guns. Submachine guns are basically just machine guns, but they use pistol bullets instead of rifle bullets.

yeah, the bullpup was designed for more close-quarters, which is why I would prefer that. And yes, the bullpup's do require some getting used to, and if you're left handed, you're just SOL, because the rifle will eject the casings in your face. The bullpup does have some more accuracy, and some could argue less recoil, since they're heavier in the back.

I held an FNS2000 at one of the gun stores near hear. The balance was excellent, but it was unloaded at the time. I'd love to shoot one, but alas, a Romanian AK47 was already more money than I should have spent.

The M4 Carbine is my choice. 5.56, 30rd magazine and pratically no recoil. It is basically an M16A2 chopped down with a whole bunch of new additions.

Traditional. That way if you go "OH SHIT I GOTTA RELOAD!" you don't have to worry about reaching back to your shoulder to do so. Plus guns like the M-16 and M4 are iconic. :machgun2:

The big advantage to the M16/M4/AR15 compared to any bullpup design is the commonality of it. If you have a broken part, you'll find a replacement for a traditional rifle long before you'll stumble across a replacement on any bullpup.

At least, that's how it would go down in the U.S.
