A cheap and surprising way to a fallout shelter "I was thinking of how i could make or turn something into a shelter for almost any situation, Then it dawned on me, a Pool think about it:"

Ten Percenters "For the sake of discussion lets assume that Zombies are caused by a virus that hits the worlds population hard.
Somewhere around 10% of the population always survives an epidemic."

One Pistol or Small Side Arm "If you could only cary one gun, a pistol, what would it be?"

Bug out & on the road Vehicles "So what vehicles do you guys have for immediate escape from the city and what ones do you have for on the road or cross country trips."

What's in Your Medical Kit? "We've pretty much flogged every other dead horse into oblivion, but I've never heard any talk about first aid kits. There's the sexy part of disaster survival and preparation, which most here are familiar with, and then there's the stuff that is essential for survival following an emergency and not as cool; medical supplies being one of them. What do you guys keep in your jump kits as far as disaster medical goes?"

If the dead started to walk while you are at work could you survive? "If you where at work, and the bodies of the recently dead returned to life, and started attacking the living could you survive? could you make it home across town? if not where would you hold up at? What items at your workplace could you turn into a weapon to destroy the brain of the flesh eating ghouls? You can apply this to both Romero style shambling zombies, Dawn of the Dead 2004 fast running zombies, or Rage virus victims."

big or small? Body types in ZPAW! "So it's been talked about here and there in other threads but I've never seen a thread dedicated to body types in the US&D. The pros and cons of your size."

a thought or two for tobacco users and lovers "you can use it in a few ways, cigarettes, chewing, dipping, and probably some other way I haven't learned about. "

Glasses wearing people "In a ZPAW, if you lost your contacts/glasses how screwed would you be if you couldn't find a replacement? I wear glasses, but i don't have to wear them all the time."

your zombie survival plan "my question for you all is what are your plans? of course, nothing goes according to plan, but this is just a what if."

Pole Type Arms and Zombies "Staves, Spears, Scythes, even Sickles can be used as weapons, just ask your fellow farmer. Come share your thoughts on where, and when, to use these type of tools, in the battle against the Zombies."

What's your gear? "The scenario is, you find a weapons cache with whatever random guns you could ever want to annihilate a zombie with, what do you take. You can only carry 1 Machine Gun, Assault Rifle, Shotgun, or Sniper Rifle. With those, you may have a .44 or .45 caliber pistol, 9mm sidearm(s), machine pistol, compact shotgun, or light/small SMG. You may also choose from a wide assortment of Melee weapons, and you will always have your trusty knife. If you choose SMGs for your primary weapon, you may have 2 of them as primaries, and you may still have your pistols and melee weapons. So, whatcha gonna take, there's so Many GUNS!!!"

Zombies chasing you in your car "lets say that during a fast moving zombie infection you get your car and the zombies start chasing you at the current full speed. (a la DotD). After about 20 minutes you got hundred of zombies after you and your driving on a highway about 15mph, fast enough that the zombies could not catch you, but not fast enough to make them not chase you."

What would be the best pet to have after Z day. "So Z day has come and gone, the world is in disarray but you are trying to return to some normality and you want some animal company, what kind of animal would be best to keep as a pet?"

The Little Things in ZPAW "As we all know, Z-Day is going to be FUBAR.
You have the obvious threat of the living dead at every corner, whether they're running or not.
You have the equally dangerous threat of human stupidity.
Theres man-made things that pose long term threats. Such as Nuclear power plants."

Anti-Zombie Weapons Of Choice "Bows, guns, clubs, or just whatever is handy, what would you rather grab to fight the Zombies?"

hydration "everyone needs water. That's a fact. How much you drink and how you transport it is also important.
how does everyone carry theirs? I have a 100oz camelbak and a 24oz water bottle. I drink about all of that and some more on a busy day."

Long Term Survival "In a long term survival type situation would you rather try to find or create a safe enough secure enough compound to ride out the majority of the hitting the fan, or would you rather be a nomad and roam the post-apocalyptic world scavaging and never staying in one area very long in order to stay a step ahead of the hordes of undead. Then the fun part, why and what's your ideal setup, and just because i know someone will probably pick it ill put up an other catagory. (and yes those who choose fortified places could loot the surrounding area)"

What is your role in an established community "So the Zpoc has happened, it's old news. You and your group have holed up + been travelling for about 4 years. Zombies are still a problem but by now you are accustomed to their presence and they are only major problems in cities. Your main concern at this point is food shelter water and companionship."

Where Will You Hold Up? "Just a simple question I've been working myself over. And it got me thinking, what would you do?
Hole up in some abandoned house and attempt to live out your life in peace, or take to the road with friends and family, or by yourself. Or seek refuge in numbers? Fleeing where ever which way evacuee's and refugee's are heading?"

Building walls - Modern and Natural Materials "So once things have settled down, the zeds are around but in smaller numbers, you will most likely head to more remote locations to start over. Building walls to keep out the random zombie as they leave the cities for food is going to be key."

Zombie Ingenuity "If you drop to your chest and slide under something, a zombie will copy you.
If you climb a ladder, the zombie won't know to grip and pull and step and push.

Test Mountain house food "I think this would be the correct place for this as Mountain house is supposedly good dehydrated food. Honestly I have never had it before and am going on word of mouth. I visited the online store and a pop up asking me if I wanted to test some of their new breakfast things came up. I accepted and they are going to mail me 2 meals to eat and tell them what I think."

family whats your opinion "family may be important to some i wanna know what everyone thinks."

Found: the perfect survival vehicle "Thought I'd post this awesomely modified bike as the perfect zombie outbreak survival vehicle. It gets 200 mpg, goes 25 mph (faster than any shambler can walk/run), and can be picked up with one finger, thrown over a fence or other obstacle, and ridden away to safety. How cool is that!"

"The Colony" Scenario "I'm not sure how many people are watching this season of The Colony, but basically it boils down to this:
There is a group of 7 - 10 survivors in an abandoned, urban setting. Buildings are dilapidated, with weak doors, broken or missing windows, and leaking roofs. There are no firearms available, though no explanation is given as to why. The people you have ended up with by your twists of fate are all complete strangers."

THE weapon cheap and effective"

what is the most effective way to run a group. "So Z day has happened, you have survived and have gathered to together a group of survivors. As time passes your little band grows with new people joining you. After a year or two you establish a little settlement, your prospering for the sake of argument lets say your group has expanded to number some 150 adult members."

Hummer or Truck? "So I was having a lively discussion with my friend about which car would be best during the zombie apocalypse. It was between the Hummer and a truck."

communication "All this talk about weapons, well what about communication?"

Shelters 102: avoiding deathtraps "Invariably, I know I'll see someone come in here and talk about a GOOD place to stay, and that will lower my faith in humanity a little bit more, but I digress."

Calibers: Consolidate or Diversify? "So when preparing one's anti-zed arsenal, do you think it better to focus on a few calibers to simplify matters? Or should you try to diversify and have more caliber options?"

Raiding: Basic strategy and tactics "We've talked often about the eventual need for raids to resupply. We will probably depend on whatever we can scavenge from the ruins until we get something better than a zero-sum economy going."

NOTLD 68 - The great debate "One of the best parts of NOTLD 68 for me is where Harry Cooper and Ben argue about barricading themselves in the basement, or boarding up and defending the farm house. What would you of done? Or done differently?"

How to get food to Andy in DOTD04? "One of the intresting things to me about Dawn of the Dead 2004 was how the survivors in the mall had plenty of food, but little in way of weapons, and ammo. Andy had a whole gun store full of weapon, and ammo, but very little food. Andy was trapped in his own Gunworks, and was slowley starving to death. Pretty ironic. From the movie it looked like it was a good 300-500 yards from the roof of the mall to Andys Gunworks. How could the survivors in the store get Andy food with what they could find inside the mall with thousands of zombies between them? Could that same system be used to send back ammo to the mall? or weapons one piece at a time? Or was Andy just screwed?'

Fire and Zombies "Do you think that fire could be used as an effected weapon against zombies?"

Budgeting Your Survival "Only have 5 dollars? Where can you go to start getting cheap supplies just to be ready for Z-day? How much do these items cost and how would they help."

Long term survival "Ok let me set the scene, its 5 years after the initial Zombie outbreak. The zombies are still wondering round, they don?t seem to be rotting and through some unknown process their bodies seem to have stabilized. The one blessing is that through gradual attrition there are less zombies around and the worst of the pressure is off. The human living population has been significantly reduced, to around 5% of what it was. However you are now in a stable group. Supplies of food are running low and its becoming increasingly difficult to find. You?re now beginning to think of the future, longer term survival and rebuilding some kind of society how are you going to survive in the longer term. where are you going to live, how are you going to get food, how is your group going to be governed, how will you interact with other groups."

How much does my Ammo weigh? "I would like to see the information added to until we can calculate the approximate weight of all of the common calibers."

Things you are would be worried about. "Well come Z-day I think I have a fairly full proof plan that will allow me to survive a Zombie invasion but I still have some worries."

Medicine and Medical Kits "As the title says, Medicine and Medical Kits. What are yours?"

Bob's Long Lost Brother "By god I think I've found him."

"Bug out or eradicate the zombie menace" "If its been establish that the bodies of the recently dead have been returning to life, and are attacking the living, would you load up your vehicle, and bug out to a safer location? Would you stay on the run in an attempt to survive? Z-Day: Caravaneers (What Will You Drive and What Kind of Gear would you Have?) "I know that foot might be the best form of transportation for Z-Day, but a car would be alot more safe (except for noise and gas consumption), What will you drive? Gear also includes Guns, Knives, Water, etc."

An interesting question I keep asking myself (Help needed) "I, like a lot of you i am sure, have thought of what to do and where to go if/when there is a zombie apocolypse. I know I would have plenty of canned food, water, medical supplies, etc. handy in a certain room of the house."

10/22 magnum "I got one of these on its way to me, never owned the 10/22 version, but have had a few others. Is CCI MAXMAG V still the hottest round in a magnum?"

In a Firearm, would you trade Power for Ammo availability? "Ask anyone on the street," If you were attacked by a zombie, what gun would you use?" Chances are they would answer with a large, heavy gun with tons of power. But is that the best way to go about dispatching a zed in the event of an outbreak? Heres an example. Would you rather use something that will get the job done, like a 9mm? Or use a more powerful but harder to find 50 caliber? Discuss."

Magnification or no magnification: the choice of optics "If in a zpaw situation will you choose an optic with magnification or no magnification? Which one and why? "

What Continent Has The Best Chance? "If you could pick any Continent to live out a Zombie Apocalypse, which one would you chose and why?"

Zombie Animals? - The Under-Estimated Threat... "Many people prepare for a zombie apocalypse. They get weapons, they fortify structures, they create evacuation plans, and so on. But I'd be willing to bet that MOST if not ALL of these preparations are centered on human zombies--not "animal zombies". Several films in recent years have shown the possibility of animal zombies, that is animals who are also infected with whatever is plaguing the human race. Birds, dogs, and monkeys just to name a few."

Could Zombies Really Take Over? "We see it in just about every zombie movie out there:
The zombies drive the human population down to near extinction, and wander around aimlessly."

AR or AK "I thought this thread already existed, but I certainly can't find it if it does and I thought it would be better to start one than continue hijacking the SKS/M14 thread. So with that said let's discuss the relative merits and weaknesses of each weapon. The purpose of this thread isn't a poll what each of us would want, but a serious discussion on each of the weapons so people can make an informed decision."

flesh vests "armor covered vests covered in human brains, the zombies become attracted to the vest instead of the person... allows a quick kill tatic, also for the bigger zombie the tatical bomb vests to cover your neck and a helmet to cover your head... bomb squad armor would be the best essintial survival armor..only downfall is this flesh vest will also attract zombies."

Survival Food Tablets "Has anyone heard of these ?"

The Undead... AT SCHOOL?! "So, the dead are walking, yet, you're at school. Survival obviously would be tough, seeing as how you don't have much to use. How would you survive? Don't worry though, the undead aren't in the school yet, they have a few sets of doors to go through :x , so fortify yourself and ready up."

12 gauge vs. 20 gauge "I've been shooting scatterguns for many years and anything I?ve been able to do with my 12 gauge I?ve been able to do with my 20 gauge equally well."

Tazers "Do you guys think that tazers would be a good, though not only/primary, anti zombie weapon?"

Conundrum "You are safe and secure in your home with your girlfriend, weapons, food, water and security sorted, when the zombie apocalypse strikes.
But, your son lives with your ex wife the other side of town.
Of course you are going to go and get them and bring them to your safer location.
But what happens if your ex says she will not come with you?"

Survivorman "Has anyone here ever seen the tv show Survivorman? it airs on OLN and used to be on Discovery. I think they did about 32 episodes and then the guy stopped because it was extremely taxing on his body."

.22 rifles? "Do you think they would be effective in a zombie outbreak? They are weak but all you need is a head shot right? I read the zombie survival guide and .22 rifles are good, but you need to get a little close to be sure you kill a zombie."

Alright. For the longest time I wanted an M1 Carbine. I know ZSG says to use it and ZSG is a joke, but it did seem like a good weapon. I've realized that living where I live, I might not be able to get one or the rounds it fires. So I'm thinking about a Ruger Mini-14. So here's my question. Has anyone fired it and what did you think of it?

Escaping the City "Lately I've been contemplating a move to Pittsburgh to see if life there is any better than life in this rat hole. I was wondering though... if you lived right in the heart of a major city with a good 10 to 20 miles of urbanized area around you, how would you get out?"

Zombie, Run. "Don't know if any of you guys have Droids, or if this app runs on other phones for that matter, but I have to say this was an absolutely amazing game I downloaded today."

In case of Infection, anything has a purpose! "Like a small, it could be used to break into windows to search for weapons. Get anything you could find! Personlly if a horde attacked my horse, I'd ge into my gun locker and grab my Riotgun...but you get the point. Your weapons should contain one sword. Cut off the arms of any zombie! A zombie is waaaaaay weaker then. But anyway, use anything youy can find. Heck, even a toaster is good for a zombie apocalypse! You could use a toaster to break a car alarm to drive away or something...:clap:"

watches and assoc gear for the ZPAW "i was just recently gifted a really nice citizen black finish chronograph [AT0815-51E] for conducting a wedding for a couple of my friends and i began thinking about what sort of watches would be good gear for the ZPAW. I'm thinking an eco drive chronograph, maybe a slide rule inner bezel and a compass outer bezel."

Don't have s gun, I got a slingshot ! "I don't own a gun, and have never actually fired one except a couple of times when I was a kid and followed my father and older brother into the woods and they let me use their rifle to target practice. Oh, and my brothers B.B. gun. So while making my Bug Out Bag I got the idea to get a sling shot with ball bearings or marbles as ammo. Found this at a sporting good store yesterday."

Saiga 12 "The Saiga 12 is a semi-auto 12 gauge shotgun based on the Kalashnikov design. They are manufactured in Russia by Izhmash on the same assembly lines that produce Russia's military and law enforcement weapons. They feature a chrome-lined barrel, adjustable gas plug for low-power rounds, and a manual bolt lock. My particular model has a 19" barrel with fixed sights (The alternatives being a 24" barrel and/or an adjustable sight leaf). Every Saiga 12 is made in a sporting configuration so they are legal to import."

One "comfy" thing? "Imagine your sitting alone, scared, cold and wet (maybe it's raining :) ) in a zombie infested world with the dead roaming around you, their shuffeling sound boring into your head like a razor blade. What one thing could you bring that would comfort you? Is it an old photo of your familiy, your favorite teddy bear, a pack of gummies?"

L4D Zombies "What if the world was overran by L4D zombies? Would you-"

P90 x "For those of you who have heard of P90X, do you think that it would be a good way to get in shape or in some cases better shape for a ZPAW? "

Sharing supplies? "his could happen in any disaster, but let's say it's the beginning of a zombie apocalypse and you're trapped indefinitely in a building with others, and have formed a group with them. You've either managed to scavenge some supplies, or have your own either from bringing it with you or because this occurred in an apartment building occupied by you or someone close to you."

Do I sound pretty well prepared weapon-wise and vehicle-wise for the zombie Ap. "I have a 1964 Cadillac Coupe Deville and a 2005 Crown Vic police Car for transportation for my friends and a Mosin Nagant with 500 rounds + 2000 AK47 Rounds (for one I may find)."

The ones list "This is a multi part question. You have all the time to gather these supplies and even go to a store and buy them."

When not ready for zombie attacks "you get mad in zombie attacks:x well all you have to do when not ready is easy. 1st make sure no one in the house is a zombie(when you see zombies outside). 2nd make sure you have long melee weapons(like a Hard bat) ,or and long range weapon( bow with arrows, guns etc).3 make sure your glass is good for any attack. 4th make sure that you can make it to your call with everyone alive is with you. 5 make it to car with every 1 not bitted by a zombie and are alive. 6 get to a place with alive people(like a army base or a the next state or contry. Then of now hopefly your not bit. Now your home free for that time :) ."

Zombie survial fitness "for z-day, i believe that even the best equipped, best planned survivor will have a greatly reduced chance of survival if they are not physically fit."

Blades and Zombies "Gun shy? Not skilled in those style weapons? Or do you just prefer the feel of cold sharp metal? For whatever reason you're slicing and dicing, here's where you can talk about your bladed preferences."

MREs "I was wondering what people's opinions were on MREs as a major source of food in a undead world. I got out of the military in 1992, and I thought that MREs were terrible, especially if you had to eat them 3 times a day for up to a week. I am sure they are far better now. They are somewhat lightwieght, and easy to carry. I remember Dehydrated pork patties were about the nastiest thing I have ever ate. I am writting a zombie story, so that is why I am asking about them, and I dont know that much about the current state of MREs."

Handheld radios "Im trying to determine what would be the best handheld type of radio to have for all-purpose.
I was looking into getting the 30 mile range two ways, but thinking about it a little more, a vhf/marine radio may be a better option, with several public channels and perhaps a weather band? They are a bit more pricey and larger than 2 ways, but I think the options would make up for it."

Zombie traps "Ok, traps can't be relied on to kill zombies.. but they can seriously damage their speed or even "catch" them"

How long do zombies "live" for "How long do you think zombies keep walking for. Do you think that they eventually run out of energy and collapse, or do they keep walking until their flesh becomes so rotten that they just fall apart."

Sensory overload and zombies "I was just thinking, like any other animal zombies also use their senses to catch prey. I know this isn't new, for instance some people have suggested stinking yourself up to mask your smell, but I have to wonder if the opposite would work too."

Boats? "What do you think of taking a boat through a river to escape? If you think about it, most zombies can't swim. Even if they could you could headshot them before they got to the boat. It's doubtful they'd be found along rivers anyway. That way you could escape to the country, slaughter animals and grow your own crops for food. You might have a few wandering about out there, but not the hordes you'd find in the city. It wouldn't be as fun as the city, but you'd have a better chance for survival."

Vehicles 102:transport you could do without "post what vehicles you wouldn't want, personally i wouldn't want an electric car..hard to find places to recharge, low torque, zombies could probably break in quite easily...and you wouldn't look very cool either:)"

Pets and other Animals in the Zed World "Would any of you deal with having a pet, say a dog, while on the run in a Zed infected world?"

Weapons 102: The ones you DON'T want to have "We have tons of threads about the "best" weapon, I think at least 3 or 5 talking about the gun you'd want to have, but what about weapons you're better off without?"

Zombie Infestation Simulator "Realistic zombie onslaught simulation. Fully parametrical. Proves that humans actually have a chance!.. "

Zombies, Looters, & Rodents Oh My! "we should all be here to talk about the upcoming Zombie Apocalyptic Outbreak and how we plan and hope to survive this event. The first threat to human existence is the flesheating ghouls, they will actively hunt us to consume our flesh, and seek world domination (OK, I was a little over the top.). Mankind (gender nonspecific), are not prepared physically, emotionally, or mechanically for such a horrific reality. As always, there are a few of ATZ members out there that label us as gun nuts, survivalists, anarchists, and 5150s (aka Looney Toons or NUT JOBS), I can live with that and will mourn your deaths. The survivors/extremists have take steps to insure the human race will survive the upcoming Zombie Apocalyptic Outbreak, repopulate the earth with the living, and rebuild the world."

My Favorite Der Riese Strategy "This is my personal favorite and arguably the best der riese strategy out there. Has commentary. Rate, comment, subscribe! I'm new to the forum btw."

When does survival take a back seat? "What situation would ever make you do something not in the best interest of survival?"

A love for the .223/5.56 "A lot of debate among this round. It was originally developed and implemented not to be so much of as killer as it has as a "wounding round" (it takes at least one soldier to carry a wounded one), but in the USMC, I have learned how to shoot the m16A2 with accuracy beyond belief. A good marksman can pattern a group at 500 meters within 12 inches with open sights. I am currently in the market to purchase another assault rifle. I currently have a few in the "overseas" style but am wanting one with a bit less recoil and more lightweight and maneuverable. The M1 is kinda looking good but seems a bit bulky and heavy. What would be a good alternative? Im looking for lightweight but something that is accurate that will most likely have to have a longer barrel and a good punch."

Finding, Growing and/or Breeding Food "As it is Easter, I thought I would write about the Incredible Edible EGG and the factory that produces them, the chicken. These feathered friends are fantastic in the post zombie apocalyptic world. They can be kept in a relatively small area, eat almost any and everything put in front of them. Chickens produce a continuous supply of fresh food via the eggs and meat. Chickens are great for insect and small pest control and are great early warning systems. ruger 10/22 people "I know there are some ruger 10/22 people out there. I have had one since i was like 14 or something, i bought another about a year ago. I have put a shooters ridge bull barrel and thumb hole stock on it and its nice and all, but i want to go a more "tactical" root with it. Scavenging In a City, is it possible? "We all know that you can probably get away with scrounging the country side, digging into some old farm owner's house to get some food. But what if your stuck in a city? Even better, what if your stuck in a huge "planed community", with at least 500,000 people who all turn into zombies? Bolt action rifles: Pros and Cons against zeds "IMO, bolt action rifles belong solely in the marksman/sniper niche, for ordinary combat situations they are largely a no go. Against fast moving humans, you need a higer rate of fire, and against hordes of zombies you need higher magazine capacity than the 5-10 rounds they usually can load."

I have been looking to buy this for a while and have done a bit of research. So i set out and found some targets that were made for just that, and as you all can see I did just fine.
