watched
In the Mouth of Madness 8/10 Carpenter does Lovecraft!
Gojira 10/10 finally watched the original Japanese version of Godzilla.

ITMOM was all right, I dunno, I thought it'd be better for some reason. Better than a lot of the Lovecraft movies that's for sure.
Hey, been kinda curious as to Godzilla movies for some reason lately. If you were to recommend the very best one to watch, what'd it be? The original? I'm talking about the original ones of course from the 60s-70s or whatever. Keep in mind I have no sentimental attachment or any preconceived notions about it really, other than it'll be kinda cheesy (which is ok).

I recently watched The Warriors and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988). I had only caught snippets of both before. The Warriors was pretty decent. I watched the director's edition or whatever, and really liked the Greek references and comic book style. Munchausen was a visual feast; Terry Gilliam knocked it out of the park again.

Also watched Make-Out With Violence, an indie, somewhat arty zombie movie. The zombie in it wasn't even really the main focus, but a subplot birthed from the original plot of the main characters' love. Left many questions unanswered and it was generally disappointing, but it was definitely one of the most original zombie movies I've seen (or maybe I should say "movie-with-a-zombie-in-it").

Many Godzilla fans usually recommend Godzilla vs Mothra. I think it is the best suit they ever made and there are many great sequences. Godzilla vs Hedora (the Smog Monster) is really good and one of the darkest ones aside from the original. Terror of Mechagodzilla has some of the largest action scenes.
BTW I love The Warriors! Such as good movie!

Watched the new movie
Drive 8/10
Very good movie made in an interesting subtle way. But then there is some brutal violence as well. Best new movie I've seen in a while.

Seven Blood Stained Orchids - decent early 70's giallo from Umberto Lenzi(who directed 1980 Nightmare City). I give it a 7/10 rating

Mansion of the Doomed - late 70's or early 80's film directed by actor Michael Pataki(who starred in films like Halloween 4, Zombie Death House, etc..) and stars Lance Henriksen. I give it a 5/10 rating

Just got in the mail
Godzilla vs Mothra - Media Classics sp ed

Tales Beyond the Pale box set radio plays.
Saw these advertised over at Rue Morgue and listened to samples and they sound really good. The cds are some of the nicest digipacks that I have seen.

And a personalized 8x10 of John Carpenter because my wife and I donated to a shelter to help medical bills for an abused dog. If you donated so much John's wife awarded everyone with signed pics. I didn't expect it to be personalized though! Bonus!

The Sleeper - low budget indie film that was made last year for $30,000 and was very cool indeed. This is a slasher film set up on a college campus and it's set in 1980 so it has that 80's vide to it and the kills in it were pretty good and decent. It has elemnts of slasher films Black Christmas, He knows You're Alone, Halloween, When a Stranger Calls, etc.....

Recently watched..

Melancholia -- New Lars von Trier film, original, artistic and excellent as always.
Mortuary -- pretty bad Lovecraftian flick with zombies in it, directed by Tobe Hooper. Shame.
Take Shelter -- watched this one per MorbidFilm's nonadvice. I really dug it, a unique examination of mental illness and family bonds. Michael Shannon was terrific as always. The whole movie had an uneasy feel to it, and the ending was very satisfying. Didn't really seem slow at all to me.
The Mystery Team -- HILARIOUS, about three recent high school graduate friends that still kind of act like they're in a Hardy Boys or Encyclopedia Brown detective kids' book. Reminded me of The Brady Bunch Movie a bit.
The Good, The Bad, The Weird -- Japanese Western stylistic film, pretty funny and an obvious homage to Sergio Leone.
A Cadaver Christmas -- laughed out loud so many times at this zombie flick. A real gem, very well done. Film makers were obviously competent and did everything right. Really surprised how much I liked it, will review it come the holiday season.
The Girl Next Door -- somewhat disturbing movie, inspired by real events.

I've also been going through Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, currently towards the beginning of season 2.

Recently bought the "limited edition" The Dead two-disc set on Blu-ray, from Germany (Amazon.de). Needed something to test out the multi-region feature on my new Blu-ray player, so that gave me the excuse pay for the $14 shipping charges.
As long as I was paying crazy shipping charges, I went ahead and got Born Undead (aka Garden of Love) while I was at it (didn't cost extra shipping), an Olaf Ittenbach film not available here in the States. It has English subtitles, unlike some of the other Olaf Ittenbach films that were available, and it got good reviews, and was fairly cheap. Hopefully this German zombie splatter film is decent. I've only ever seen Premutos: Lord of the Living Dead by him, and it was pretty crappy video quality so an actual DVD will be nice.
