Merle Dixon is back!

The Walking Dead's racist and hot-tempered brother of Daryl is back in action for Season 3, as evidenced by this first-look photo AMC released on Wednesday. The last we saw of Merle, he had unceremoniously chopped his own arm off when he was handcuffed to a pipe on an Atlanta rooftop, lest he be eaten by the horde of zombies heading his way during Season 1.

As we can see in the photo, Merle has a very interesting device now in place of his missing arm. Does he use it as a weapon? The more important question: Where has Merle been all this time? Presumably, Merle would want to join other vicious and bloodthirsty leaders, and with the introduction of The Governor on the horizon, it seems all too likely we'll find Daryl's brother in the town of Woodbury, where at least part of Season 3 will take place as we follow The Governor's exploits. The other part of the action, that we know of, will be at the prison, nearby where Rick & Co. were last seen at the end of Season 2.

Still, Merle could be any number of places, including, but not limited to: Hanging out in the prison commissary, safe and sound in some other CDC, following Michonne around, or part of Randall's group of friends who have come looking for revenge. Suffice to say, Merle probably won't be too happy with T-Dog since he was the one who dropped the keys to the cuffs, a mistake that resulted in Merle amputating his own arm. Ouch!

Where do you think Merle has been all this time?

I just watched Michael Rooker in Mall Rats last night

Yes Rick is going wish he had his golden ladder to the sky ( He murdered Shane) when the man Merle comes to town. Its going to be a long summer having to wait for season 3.

I hope he does come back. He's the jerk we all love to hate. He'll most likely try to create problems for Rick's group. I suspect he might have thrown his lot in with The Governor. Daryl will probably have to put an arrow in his own brother's head, for the good of the group.

Probably but I have a feeling cutting off Rick's hand will link in with the comic story better (soz if that's a spoiler). Plus there's the little nugget where I think he references Rick's hand to Daryl in his hallucination of him in season 2. I think it will tie the whole thing in better. We'll see though. I'm just saying that outcome is where my money's at.

That would be awesome, especially if Merle ends up becoming some uber evil villain with 2 swords/knives for hands. Doubt that'll happen though.

I saw that he is coming back and got pretty excited. You do hate to love that guy. It's gonna be a crazy season. I waited on him to come back ever episode.

Shane was a wannabe tough guy, but we didn't see what he was like when Merle was around. Bet Shane would have been too chicken to confront him about anything.

Yeah, it seems like Shane's "tough guy" persona was really driven by his insane obsession with Lori, and in taking over as dad to Carl. Whereas, Merle was just a racist jerk (and I have no doubt that he will continue in that manner for season 3).

It's a wonder that the Dixon brothers, under Merle's lead, didn't take the survivor group for everything they had, and just survive as a duo.

Merle would have found the group cumbersome and annoying.

I think that Daryl is a good man. He might have to make a choice between his bro and the group but my money is on the group.

Not sure about choosing the group. The time he was trying to make it back to them, only imagining Merle was with him, had Daryl cutting the ears off the zombies and putting them on a necklace round his neck. What he'll be like with Merle actually being physically with him, and grudges arising fom when the group had left Merle on the roof, will come back to the surface, and influencing his reasoning.

I look to the last scene of last seasons ender, when Carol is trying to poison Daryl with ideas of taking over the group and Daryl says, "Rick is a good man".


I see his trophies (ears) as temporary insanity, he was wounded, tired and delusional. He saw Merle talking to him after all.

Without having Merle's method of keeping him going, his ghostly appearance more for our benefit than Daryl's, he might not have made it. We were 'seeing' what Daryl imagined his brother would have said and acted had he been there with him.

Merle being back with him in Series 3, might reactivate this insanity, that Merle had in bucketloads.

Such madness just needs a trigger.

As for saying Rick was a good man, well, Merle wan't there to compare him against. Blood is thicker than water after all.

Anyone else seen the pictures of him in (I believe it was) Entertainment Weekly? They've given him a snazzy steel cop over his stub, fitted with a bayonet.

Every time I looked at it all I kept thinking is that they didn't have the balls to go "Full-Ash" with a chainsaw. :)

I'm wondering if the bayonet attachment is just one of several that can be fitted to his arm. It gives the impression he is able to alternate the weapons he could use depending on the situation.
