The Dead wasn't bad but nothing i would run out and buy , i'd consider it a one time watch .

I just watched this the other day.. it's more artistic and original than other zombie flicks, but the things it tries to do, artistically, don't quite work half the time. It ends up being kind of clunky. It felt like they used the narrator too much. I did like how the movie was separated into different "chapters" and the title sequences when naming each chapter worked (kind of like in Clerks or Pulp Fiction). I liked the animation segments, but they felt like they were on top of the story, not intertwined with it. And I did enjoy the story; could really feel the main character's pain and turmoil. I'd give it 7/10. The film makers really did try to create something epic, artistic and original, but just couldn't quite get all the way there.

I agree paultagonist, it was good but as a whole there was something missing with the story.

I felt the animation just was a "save money on scenes/effects" and that was why it was there. So to me an above average zom movie. A bit slow in parts and I felt more for the horse than the humans.

Yeah it did seem like that.. during most of the animated parts there were plenty of zombies and violence, and things that would've taken a budget to pull off for real, but no more or less so if animated. I understand wanting to show big things, but when nearly all of it is in the animated sequences, it only reminds you that much more that they're not in the live action parts. I did like the style of animation though; I don't think there's enough hand-drawn animation these days (dang kids and their fancy computers grumble grumble, heheh). I would recommend it, but only with the caveat to not expect anything stunning, just above average, like you said.

I'll say this though, as per nitpick, one of the biggest mistakes you can make in a zombie movie, is explain WHY it happened. I hate that, you automatically lose all credibility, and ruin the entire theme.

I have to agree. The zombie genre has become so stale and boring that now I have to judge zombie films against bad zombie films because there really aren't any good ones anymore. Especially compared to the excellent The Walking Dead.

Explaining is bad. I hate that there is an expectation that once one good movie comes out the genre is stale. Tons of the same kind of movies come out from each genre and we don't hear the same thing. I guess if it isn't a teen horror movie it is a waste of time.

Yeah I do the same, I compare zombie flicks to other zombie flicks. Let's not kid ourselves, this is full-on B movie territory, and zombie movies are at the bottom of the B movie barrel. It's not way too often that one manages to crawl up enough to compare to a "real" movie. When I give a number rating, I give two: one as a zombie movie, and the other as a real movie. The real movie rating is always at least one point below the zombie movie rating. For example, I'd give Shaun of the Dead a 9/10 as a zombie flick, but 8/10 as a regular movie.
There's a lot of different factors as to why the quality of zombie flicks are so low, and we could point them all out, but the end result is the same: there's a lot of bland, unoriginal "meh" out there. As far as Exit Humanity goes, I wouldn't go so far as to call it a gem, but it's definitely better than most low-budget z-flicks.

I was actually impressed with how well the explanation worked in this movie. It's not easy to give an explanation and still retain credibility, unless you don't pretend to have much credibility in the first place ("a meteor crashed into an Indian burial ground where the government was dumping radioactive waste!"). But I really thought it worked here, especially the scene when he

finds out the old hermit lady was responsible for the living dead, and anguish & loathing temporarily falls upon him when he realizes he's looking at the person that indirectly killed his family (though I did think he forgave her a bit too quickly).

The explanation was part of the story and I'd even go so far as to say it was necessary to the story. It wasn't an explanation just for the sake of an explanation; they didn't use it just for a way to get the zombie show on the road. It wasn't even at the beginning of the film in this case, heheh.

How was the zombie makeup/fx? Are they shamblers? How was the gore in this?
