[sidebar] Video allegedly shows Montreal killing

Warning: graphic content

A video which purportedly shows Luka Rocco Magnotta brutally killing and sexually assaulting a naked man appears on a Canadian-operated website called Best Gore. It describes itself as a "reality news website" which posts real videos to show people the "uncensored truth."

"They are as real as they get and I believe people have the right to know the truth," the website reads.

The nearly 11-minute-long video purports to show Mr. Magnotta attacking a naked male, who is tied to a bed frame, with both an ice pick and a kitchen knife, according to the description.

The victim is stabbed, has his throat slashed and is later decapitated and dismembered. The video, filmed in a dimly lit room, also shows the killer playing with his victim's limbs and using one of them to masturbate. The attacker later performs a sex act on the corpse.

The video was posted on Best Gore on May 25, but it is unclear when, or where, it was filmed, although police have confirmed Magnotta's Montreal apartment was a crime scene.

"1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick is without a doubt the sickest thing you will have ever seen in your entire life," Best Gore writes.

"Montreal artist fights legal battle over 'obscene' make-believe horrors" (April 30, 2012)

Montreal - The Canadian Press

. . .

In his basement workshop scattered with fake severed limbs, bloody heads and internal organs, Remy Couture sets about creating and crafting the macabre.

The 34-year-old special-effects artist has been plying his trade for several years on a freelance basis, getting work on some Hollywood movies and smaller contracts. As with any artist, Mr. Couture says he's always trying to push the limits of his craft.

That drive to disgust audiences has landed him in trouble with law enforcement - in more than three years' worth of trouble.

Mr. Couture is charged with several counts of corrupting morals through the possession, production and distribution of material deemed obscene. That material includes a pair of short films and some photos depicting an imaginary psychopathic masked killer of Mr. Couture's making.

His attempt to make that character come to life has placed him at the centre of what is believed to be a first for a Canadian horror filmmaker.

Three years later, his case has not gone to trial.

The case was delayed again on Monday, until Dec. 10, stretching his legal ordeal further. Mr. Couture appeared in court on Monday wearing a T-shirt that read "ART IS NOT A CRIME" - a theme central to his own legal defence and one of the central reasons for his battle.

"It's very stressful," Mr. Couture said of his legal ordeal, "but I can't turn back now."

Mr. Couture was arrested in a scene that could have been out of a movie itself. In October 2009, Montreal police swooped in on him in an elaborate sting with detectives posing as a couple trying to set up a horror-themed photo shoot.

As far as Mr. Couture can tell, the original complaint came via Interpol from Germany. Someone stumbled upon "Inner Depravity," Mr. Couture's website, and contacted police.

. . .

Mr. Couture's two-week long jury trial starts on Dec. 10.

In the meantime, while he prepares to defend his legal right to portray make-believe horrors, Mr. Couture will be especially preoccupied in the coming months with a real-life fears.

He will be looking after his girlfriend, who has a cancer-related operation scheduled for June and months of therapy ahead.

As for his court case, "it takes on a secondary role," Mr. Couture said.

"What I'm going through is stressful, but she's battling for her life."

"Teacher suspended for showing alleged Luka Rocco Magnotta murder and mutilation video to students" (June 13, 2012)

MONTREAL - A Montreal high school teacher has been suspended and is facing a disciplinary hearing Wednesday after showing the video of the alleged murder and mutilation of Jun Lin to his Grade 10 students.

The unidentified history and citizenship teacher at Cavelier-De LaSalle high school in the borough of LaSalle screened the grotesque scenes during his class on June 4, reportedly after a show of hands on whether students wanted to see it.

. . .

Luka Rocco Magnotta, 29, was arrested last week in Berlin and is facing murder charges in connection with the killing. He is awaiting extradition from Germany.

. . .

The teacher, described as being about 25-years-old, was suspended with salary as soon as the administration learned of the screening. The school immediately made a team of psychologists and counselors available to students traumatized by what they had seen.

That same day, the board said, the teacher apologized to the school through an email. A decision on final disciplinary action will be made following Wednesday's hearing with the labour-relations officials from the school board.

Students interviewed Wednesday by Radio-Canada said they felt badly for the teacher, because they had chosen by vote to watch the video. "We are all curious, and we all want to know what really happened," one girl told the network. "But in the end I'm not sure it was really relevant. In the beginning we all wanted to know how it happened, but when I think about it, maybe it was not the right action to take."

Another student told reporters that it was the students who asked him to play the video. She said the teacher was hesitant. A few children in the class also objected. But the vast majority of students, she said, convinced him to play the video.

A video circulating on the Internet - called 1 Lunatic, 1 Ice Pick - is believed by authorities to show Lin's murder in Montreal several weeks ago.

It shows someone stabbing a man and dismembering him. It then shows the killer committing acts of sex and cannibalism on parts of the corpse.

Some have also questioned how [Rémy Couture] faces charges for distributing a simulated dismemberment when no one has ever been charged with putting the murder of Lin Jun online - the alleged victim of Luka Magnotta.
