Well I for one was very disappointed in Diary of the Dead and I don't know if Romero is or ever will be good again as a zombie director cause he is up in age now. Reminds me of Lucio Fulci who was good but when he got old his films started sucking.
I don't think Romero is broke or needs money but his style is lacking now imho. His last good film was Land of the Dead which wasn't great by any means.

If i recall correctly, the reason for Diary was a commentary on the current media. I think that's the main problem with his movies. I think he feels he needs to have an underlying message, and wants to continue with the direction he originally intended for his story. Maybe if he'd step away from his "...of the Dead" line, and start a whole new zombie apocalypse series without any message, it might be better.

Am I the only person in the world who liked Diary of the Dead better than Land of the Dead?

Yep.
The mummy thing was one of the stupidest things I've ever seen.
I will say it had some good kills in it.
Now Survival is a different story.

I think Diary was made because some producers approached Romero and offered the opportunity to make a movie right away and not have to wait years before his next project. And the found footage was an easy way to make a quick film within the 2 week production. It was just an opportunity.

Liked Diary of the Dead, while it certainly was not Romero's masterpiece, it was good in my opinion. Good enough to be added to my dvd collection of horror/scifi movies. I've seen far worse zombie movies.

No, i liked it better than Land although i've only watched Land of the Dead once so i think i need to give it another chance but i think Diary was pretty good, i hated Survival though.

Diary was good. The one thing that did irritate me was the accents. All the actors were Canadian (or most were) and hearing aboot instead of about just irked me. Especially living/being from the area this took place in.

The problem I think, is the concept of subtletly seems to elude him, so the movies end up beating the viewer over the head with what he wants to say, which feels clumsy, boring and ocassionally annoying.
Telling a story without a message is nonsense, you can't. And I mean "can't", not "shouldn't". A story with any kind of coherence, persistent characters and a plot will tell a message, whether that message is a grand cultural criticism, commentary about the human experience, or simple clichés, truisms and platitudes. The only way to tell a story without a message is to tell a bunch of disconnected, boring and pointless events. Think "The Illiad" vs "Let me tell you about the time I was in line to buy olives at Walmart".
"Imagine"? "nothing to kill or die for"? Having nothing worth dying for, or killing for, is having nothing worth living for.

Your definition of what a message is, is more expanded than what mine is. A story may be based on a cliché, but that doesn't mean the writer has a desire for the audience to get the cliché.
After some reconsideration, i maintain that the problem is the story's underlying, arcing message. I think it takes the zombies in a direction that people don't want. It is humanizing the zombies. IMHO, people want the zombies to be the GAR zombies they saw in Night and Dawn. That's why i think GAR needs to take a step away from the "otD" series and start a whole new apocalypse. The only problem i foresee is that people will intermingle the two.

I fixed your post for you, it was virtually unreadable in its original form:
But no, I don't think that's the case at all. For one, they're entirely different timelines, with nothing to do with each other. Romero had no part in the Dawn remake, nor any other remake of his zombies movies, save Night '90.

Hey there guys,
Let me know how off-base I am here, but I was thinking about why Romero did that film and sort of came up with a theory, let me know what you think. I thought it might have something to do with that scene in the remake of Dawn of the Dead, the scene of him watching the dead coming back to life. Could that footage have come from the videos shot during Diary, since I thought Diary took place during the same time Night took place? It could explain where that footage came from.
Well guys what do you think?
