ATZ Forums: The best zombie apocalypse novel I've read in a long time. - ATZ Forums

It takes a lot from a book for me to be willing to give it an endorsement and share, but I read one that simply must be shared.

It's called Silence of Souls, and it's by an author I've never heard of before- Stefanie Oberhansley. Unlike most other zombie fiction, this book deals with very realistic characters. There were a few characters I would have really liked to know more about, but overall this group of people were fascinating, realistic, and the type of people you would pass by on the street. Most other zombie books deal with macho men, often ex-military, but in Silence of Souls the only ex-mil in the group is an old man whose training was more than fifty years ago. One of my favorites was Javier, a Mexican man who is thrown in with the group to survive but can't speak much English. The idea of not only dealing with the zombie apocalypse and losing one's family, but also having a language barrier is something I have not seen any other author do.

Be warned- there are some very graphic scenes. Those of you who love gore will be as satisfied as those of you who love drama and action. The author has a knack for vivid description, but she balances it well and the description does not bog down or slow the story. The last chapter was so intense, I couldn't put the book down!
