LessonNo5 says:
All right, so first off what are we talking about here.
What is "CHOMP!"? And is that still the name we can
look for it under whne it's released?
Don says:
CHOMP! is a RPG sourcebook that people can use to
role play in a zombie universe where the undead have risen.
In order to play the game you would need to purchase the
Action! System rulebook from Gold Rush Publications.
Don says:
It will be released under the CHOMP! name but under
the KILN Publications banner as to not to be confused with
my Imajica Studio
LessonNo5 says:
What's the connection between KILN Publications, Imajica
Studios, and Gold Rush Publications?
Don says:
Imajica Studio is my company that I do my artwork, and
other projects under. Since some people that play RPG
(role palying games) might not have any interest in that,
I have seperated my RPG products under a different banner.
Like Disney and Dreamworks. Same people, different sections.
Gold Rush Publications has the rights to the Action! System
which are the actual rules.
Don says:
For instance what dice to roll to find out if your character
has hit someone and killed them. My book will have rules
based on that core info.
Don says:
Everything is under the OGL (open game license) that Wizards
of the Coast (Dungeons and Dragons) put out 3 years ago.
Don says:
They did this so that people would buy their products
in order to buy other products made by individuals. They
did this as to not shut out the small press people.
Don says:
Action! System did this with their rules, you can use
their rules you just have to give them credit and give
them a copy to make sure that it complys with thier system.
Don says:
Does all of that help, I know it's alot.
LessonNo5 says:
Yeah, that's great. So exactly what inspired you to go
out and start up a game like this to begin with?
Don says:
Well in 1979 I got my first Dungeons and Dragons books.
I played that and other RPG's for years. When I got into
college no one really played them so I quit. Recently
I have began to do artwork for some RPG publishers (which
I cannot go into specifics since I signed a NDA contract).
Don says:
I have always loved zombie stuff and I wanted to develop
a game system for zombies to stay true to the George Romero
trilogy
Don says:
NOTE: There will be no licensing for anything dealing
with the Romero trilogy at this point
LessonNo5 says:
Speaking of your artwork... I know this a little off topic
for the game, but at www.imajicastudio.com
you have a lot of great horror artwork. First question is
have you always been into horror, and so natural gravitate
towards doing art with it? Also, how much of this art can
we expect to see in "CHOMP!"?
Don says:
I have always been into the horror genre so it was just
a matter of time before I did this I would suppose. My
artwork will be throughout the book. I will be commissioning
art from other artists also. I would say my art will be
about 80% in the book.
Don says:
Thank for the complement.
Don says:
I have done art for several actors from the horror film
genre also.
LessonNo5 says:
I don't want to get too off topic here, so why don't you
tell us about what we can expect from CHOMP! Let's
say we've got the core rule book, we get your game to go
with it... What do we get?
Don says:
You get a book that includes different character classes,
weapons, differnt classes of zombies (in various states
of decay so to speak), vehicles and scenarios to start
out with.
Don says:
With the Pittsburgh supplement you will get a book that
has maps of Pittsburgh as well as different scenarios
that will happen if you go to different points in the
city. That way if you have a group that wants to play
in Pittsburgh...
Don says:
this will start you off by giving you a basis to direct
them.
Don says:
The book will be squarebound and will have a ful color
cover and B/W interior.
Don says:
great, i had a great idea 4 mintes ago
LessonNo5 says:
What's that?
Don says:
I am thinking about if all goes well of haveing the initial
sourcebook containing the Pittsburgh supplement in it
because it probably won't be debuting in Pittsburgh since
it looks like I will be moving to Dallas in 2 months
Don says:
So it might be packaged all in one book or shrink wraped
together
LessonNo5 says:
Going back to the character classes... One of the classes
you plan to offer is the Redneck class. This is in addition
to more conventional classes. So, why a redneck? What
do they have to offer in-game wise that the other classes
don't?
Don says:
They will be able to handle rough terrain better (due
to hunting skills) and be able to survive out in the woods
however they will have a hard time with computers. It
will be a fun class but not offending...
LessonNo5 says:
I think you should have sub-classes... Like with Redneck
you could have: Trailer Trash, Col. Sanders, Elvis Wannabe,
and then full blown Ted Nuggent, etc.
Don says:
That would be cool, you'll have to remind me of thtat
down the road. I will have a thank you section also and
that would definitely get you in....
LessonNo5 says:
And this is all free-form right? One of the few games
to come before this was Zombie!!! Which had a board. Is
this going to be a less constrained, more D&D feel?
Don says:
Definitely, no board here. It will be up to the person
running the game to really give the players an idea of
what is going on. If they want to stand in the middle
of the road and dance like a fool they can do it, might
attract alot of zombies but they can do whatever they
want.
LessonNo5 says:
So www.kilnpublications.com is the website for your RPG-related
work. Is that site not working right now, or is it me?
Also, when do you plan to debut the game and when you
dow ill it be available for purchase on that website?
Don says:
It will be online probably in May after my move. The game
will debut in April of 2005. There will be a preview look
at the Las Vegas Comicon. It will be able to be purchased
at the website and I want to get an ISBN number for bookstores.
It will be available in either print format or pdf format.
Don says:
As for the official debut, I am hoping that it will be
at a show.
LessonNo5 says:
This game sounds highly adaptable to internet play. That
way people with no friends, like me, can pretend to be 16
year old girls and sucker dudes into playing a game of CHOMP!
online. Do you think you might plan on implementing internet
downloads, hosting internet-only packages for gameplay,
etc. ?
Don says:
That would depend on how the game goes, it would be nice
to maybe have allthingszombie to host something like that.
Right now I just want to get the first book out.
LessonNo5 says:
Understood. All right, I think that pretty much wraps up
what I have for now. Just to sort of close it out, give
us a real quick sale pitch here. Basically, tell us why
we should play CHOMP! Also, the entire kit (besides
the core rules) will run about $19.95, is that right?
Don says:
Right, I know that there have been zombie games in the
past but this one will be unlike one you have ever seen
before. AND the main thing will be ease of play. Nothing
worse then getting a game and it taking months to figure
out. I want this to be real player friendly and very expandable
both by us and the actual game master.
Don says:
Yes $19.95 (for now) and if they want to down load a pdf
it will be probably $10.00.
