Boats?
What do you think of taking a boat through a river to escape? If you think about it, most zombies can't swim. Even if they could you could headshot them before they got to the boat. It's doubtful they'd be found along rivers anyway. That way you could escape to the country, slaughter animals and grow your own crops for food. You might have a few wandering about out there, but not the hordes you'd find in the city. It wouldn't be as fun as the city, but you'd have a better chance for survival.

Of course you wouldn't live on the boat. It'd just be a way to get out to a more desolate part of the country, find some sort of farm, and then wait out there until you need more supplies.
EDIT: As for the zombies getting on the boat, just kill them? Hmm... Not sure of that one.

He was saying when you're not near the boat that zeds might get in.
The problem with the whole boat thing is most major cities are build on or near a river, even today. So your chances of escaping up river to avoid a hoard of zombies will only lead you to more. Yeah, it might work, but chances are slim. |

Make sure you know how to pilot a boat. If you've never driven one before, it can be dangerous in an emergency situation. Of course, if you're talking canoe or rowboat, it would be the equivalent of a bicycle on land.
But yeah. No matter how you're evacuating, keep an eye open for those pesky zombies. They'll pop up when you least expect them and feel safest.

I think it would be the perfect way to get out of town. Notice that the OP just said the idea was to use the boat as a way to leave.
Nothin' wrong with that. Here where I live, that gives me three ways to escape: Up river, down river, and up a large creek (which is really more of a small river than a creek.) A canoe with a trawling motor would get me out of town if all the roads were blocked, and wouldn't require a large amount of gas. As for worrying about "large cities" being built on rivers, a simple map can help you avoid those. |

Boats are amazing,But remember to take a sailboat so you won't need fuel. However it takes like 30 man and an hour to start a ship and several men to operate it.
Or you can do it all with one man using this mechanical sailing ship. I think I've addressed this in a different thread.
I agree that a boat is one of, if not the safest means to avoid a zombie for these reasons: 1) A sailboat small enough to sustain a small crew doesn't need fuel; 2) Food is abundant (fish, seaweed, etc); and 3) You can avoid the population centers by staying afloat. Now here's the problems: 1) Zombies can walk under water and may be able to climb up an anchor chain; 2) The virus may affect sea life therefore ending your food supply; and 3) You have to zig zag to move...not good for river travels! My parents owned a Hunter 27 sailboat. Practically raised me on it. |

The problem with that is food. Stocked food is good for at most, 30 years for the freeze dried emergency supply stuff they sell. That's a long time, but it's not the rest of your life. It would have to be a big, big island in order to supply you and whoever you're with, at least an acre per person for farmland and another acre per person for livestock.
I only like the idea of a boat as an escape method, not as a means for long term survival. |

Zombies can barely walk. I doubt they'll be climbing up an anchor chain.
Zombies cannot walk across the bottom of a river. There's this thing called "current." All they can do is be pulled along the bottom until they wash up somewhere. Watch some flood videos sometime, and see entire cars be hauled down the street by 3 foot deep water. You'll see what I mean. Don't believe me? Get a snorkel and try it. |

Didn't consider the current. But if there is no current...that leaves the question of "can a zombie climb?" Well...can they? |

If we're talking about DOTD zeds Im pretty sure they would climb up the anchor, rope, etc. But I guess it depends on what kind of outbreak it is. Then again it doesnt matter if they can climb or not, because if when you got in the boat were spotted and followed by the time you stopped for supplies or refuge the zeds would surface from the water. And that would be pretty darn freaky |

I agree with Dave Of The Dead: why would crossing a river save you? Wouldn't there be zombies on the other side of the river, too? Wouldn't the people that live on the opposite side of the river be trying to cross over to your side to escape their zombies? (that would be funny, by the way, passing each other mid-river in an attempt to escape the zombies that infect both sides of it)
