yet another reason for carrying multiple pistols
 they aren't that heavy, you can throw the ones you're not using in your ruck, and it will increase your chances of being able to use the ammo you find (even if it's not your first choice).

I think I'll stick to a rifle and pistol combo, and save the ruck space for other supplies.
