The War of the Worlds plus blood, guts and zombies

Authors: H.G. Wells and Eric S. Brown

Master of the Undead Gives
The War of the Worlds New Life

Following hot on the heels of Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, undead short story master Eric S. Brown takes a stab at H.G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds.

In genre circles, science fiction usually carries with it some level of horror. Now zombie short story master Eric S. Brown takes sci-fi horror to a whole new level with his amazing additions to H.G. Wells’s famed novel, The War of the Worlds, now titled, The War of the Worlds Plus Blood, Guts and Zombies.

What if it wasn’t just aliens that landed that fateful day when ships from Mars appeared in the sky? What if something else happened, something that would change the face of the planet even more than an alien invasion? What if the dead began to rise and stalked the living in addition to beings from another world?

“Brown has taken the regular narrative of H.G. Wells’s book and has blended his own thoughts on a zombie apocalypse into it seamlessly,” says Brown’s publisher A.P. Fuchs of Coscom Entertainment. “I was astonished at how much he was able to mimic Wells’s voice so perfectly when I first received the manuscript. Unless you know the original forwards and backwards, you won’t know where Wells leaves off and Eric Brown begins. Aside from the zombie bits, of course.”

From the book’s jacket copy: The invasion begins . . . and the dead start to rise. There’s panic in the streets of London as invaders from Mars wreak havoc on the living, slaying the populace with Heat-Rays and poisonous clouds of black smoke. Humanity struggles to survive against technology far beyond its own, meeting fear and death at every turn. But that’s not the only struggle mankind must face. The dead are rising from their graves with an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Friends, neighbours and loved ones lost to the war of the worlds are now the enemy and the Earth is forever changed. It’s kill or be killed, if you want to survive, otherwise you might become one of the walking dead yourself.

The novel is set to be published on April 30, 2009, and will be available from Amazon.com.

I think we all need to calm down here. All these literary classic + zombie books WON'T AND NEVER WILL replace the originals. Something like this book (which I won't be reading since I think Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is enough) will soon be forgotten, whereas the classics will still live on (obviously).

you're right. I know the classics will always live on. I just can't help but think of the butchery. If that was my book and I knew in the afterlife, that this happened I'd be furious. If I was the descendant of the authors of these books, I'd be furious. It's a mockery whether it's intentional or not. I'm sure it isn't, but it's still a mockery and disgrace of something that someone worked so hard to accomplish. I would think that society would think of my work as a joke to do something like this.

I don't know. I just have a lot of respect for the great men and women who helped set the pace in the literary world.

You make many good points, and yeah if i were one of those authors I'd probably be turning in my grave.

But, these books are just basically parodies. A parody is meant to be a humorous or satirical imitation of the original. I'm sure these authors are imitating these great works of literature in a humorous light with no harm intended.

And I'm sure society won't see these classics as a joke (especially if they already considered classics in the first place).

But I do see your cause for concern in that there is a possibility these books, intentional or not

Ooh! Nice idea!

I was thinking Heart of Darkness myself but "Swiss Family Robinson and the Island of Flesh" has a nice ring to it (tho' maybe a bit too Aristocrats!). Some dinosaurs wouldn't go astray either

I don't have a problem with this. It's not like it replaces the original. And although I have tracked down a copy yet, I will read P&P&Z. It's received very positive reviews.

Don't think of it as butchery but as a remix

Well.. Hmm.. I'll have to see it, read it, and then come to a conclusion.

Having read War of the Worlds, I'm wondering how a lot of the things are going to play out.

Wow, some people have wayyyy too much time on their hands.
Its just a book, lighten up.
I'm looking forward to it, its nice to see a twist to something we have seen for so many years.
Its 2009, there are no new ideas, only remorphed old ones.
