This is for discussion on (obviously) Kane Hodder's new slasher gig, Hatchet. Anyway, am I the only one who see's this as a vehicle for Kane Hodder to play Jason again without the legal mumbo jumbo? It's all too similar to the Friday the 13th kinds of movies, if you ask me...
If it is, then good on him. He should have played Jason in Freddy vs Jason. I have read bits and pieces on it

He was okay as Jason, but I admit, I was glad to see him replaced. In my opinion, he made Jason more of a cartoon character than the killer that the first 3 Jason movies made him. (I use first 3, because he wasn't the killer in the first one). As for FvJ, I wouldn't mind seeing Ken come back as Jason again, but I'd rather see someone new come in and make us all forget about Kane Hodder, and remember him. And hopefully bring back the scary-ness.
Now I'm looking forward to Hatchet, don't get me wrong, but I think that this only goes to show how much of a crybaby Kane was when he didn't get the part as Jason for FvJ. Perhaps he'll be able to craft Victor Crowley into his own slasher, but if he ends up being another Jason-wannabe, I'll have lost even more respect for Mr. Hodder. I like to believe that Kane's Jason was on the same par as Freddy closer to the end of his series. They were okay to watch, maybe even fun once in a while, but they weren't scary at all.

I'm definitely anticipating a fun night of brew and cheese snacks when I get my hands on Hatchet.
Concerning Hodder and this being his attempt at a new Jason...who freakin' cares? I just don't see why it should matter.
Official Hatchet Press Release regarding Hatchet's release through Anchor Bay
ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT ACQUIRES ADAM GREEN’S “HATCHET”
FOR THEATRICAL DISTRIBUTION
Green’s Homage to “Old School American Horror” Gets Nationwide
Theatrical Roll-out This Spring
Anchor Bay Entertainment, the industry leader and acknowledged master of horror DVD programming, has acquired the rights to HATCHET, the highly anticipated “old-school” horror film from independent filmmaker Adam Green. Mark Ward, Vice President Acquisitions of Anchor Bay Entertainment, made the announcement.
Playing to sell-out crowds at film festivals both home and abroad, HATCHET has enjoyed critical and public acclaim. HATCHET was honored as Official Selections at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, Germany’s Fantasy FilmFest, Spain’s Sitges International Film Festival, London’s FrightFest, Austin’s Fantastic Fest and Los Angeles’ Screamfest. Now under the Starz Media banner, Anchor Bay Entertainment will release the film theatrically nationwide in April of 2007.
Visceral and unrelenting, HATCHET is Adam Green’s blood-soaked love letter to the seminal slasher film genre, which reached its critical and commercial zenith in the 1980s. Starring Joel Moore (Art School Confidential, Grandma’s Boy), Deon Richmond (Not Another Teen Movie, Scream 3) and Mercedes McNab (“Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “Angel”), HATCHET also boasts a stellar supporting cast of genre veterans including Robert Englund (“Freddy Krueger” from the Nightmare on Elm Street series), Kane Hodder (“Jason” from Friday the 13th Part VII and VIII, Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Chapter and Jason X), Tony Todd (Candyman), and Joshua Leonard (The Blair Witch Project). The film was written and directed by Adam Green and produced by Cory Neal. Producers were Sarah Elbert and Scott Altomare. Andrew Mysko and Roman Kindrachuk were the Executive Producers. FX wizard John Carl Buechler (Re-Animator, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, Halloween IV: The Return of Michael Myers) created HATCHET’s unforgettable special make-up and creature effects.
“From the opening frame to the final fade-out, HATCHET brings American film horror back to its independent, no-nonsense roots of scaring the living daylights out of the audience,” remarked Ward. “We regard the film as nothing less than the next great horror film franchise.”
"I am honored and humbled by Anchor Bay's desire to distribute HATCHET theatrically," observed Green. "Their library holds some of my most coveted titles, so to have HATCHET live amongst such classics as ‘Halloween’ and ‘Evil Dead’ is a dream come true."
The film’s tagline says it all: “It’s Not A Remake. It’s Not A Sequel And It’s Not Based On a Japanese One.” HATCHET spins a terrifying tale of tragedy and comeuppance from beyond the grave. Victor Crowley is a hideously deformed boy, living in seclusion with his father (Kane Hodder) in an isolated cabin deep in the Louisiana bayou. When a Halloween prank initiated by local kids goes terribly awry, Victor is accidentally killed in a vicious twist of irony. Years later, a tourist group visiting New Orleans’ “haunted swamps” stumble upon the remnants of that shocking event, transforming an evening of seemingly innocent fun into a horrific nightmare, from which there may be no escape.
Harry Knowles from Aint-It-Cool News declared HATCHET “…so indescribably awesome that you just cannot conceive. Kane Hodder creates a horror film icon that will stand alongside Jason, Michael Myers, and Freddy.” Variety acknowledged the film as “one of the biggest hits at the Tribeca Film Festival” and Horrorview said “If you put HATCHET head-to-head with pretty much any post-HALLOWEEN slasher, it is the new film that will emerge as the winner.” Adoration for HATCHET is not limited to to-die-for reviews. At Austin’s Fantastic Fest, the film won 1st Place Audience Award, as well as receiving Horror Jury prizes for Best Actor (Kane Hodder) and Best Special Effects.

regards the kane hodder issue ... jason is behind a mask ... so who cares who plays him ... hatchet does look promising but when the censors get their hands on it i'm sure it'll just become another average flick ... going to wait for an uncut release before i watch it i think.

By "censors" I assume you're referring to the MPAA? I highly doubt this will see the scissors now that the MPAA is openly encouraging NC-17 content from independent filmmakers. Chances are this'll be cut for PG-13 theater consumption then released uncut/unrated for the DVD market. Despite some oopsies, Anchor Bay is pretty good about offering uncut horror.

Worse case scenario it gets an 18 Certificate. I mean this isn't going to be Cannibal Holocaust or anything and the BBFC have lightened up considerably. I wouldn't fret too much.

That's what I thought. The last few years before I moved to the States saw some incredibly gory and disturbing releases. Times were certainly better than 10 or 15 years ago. I would imagine Hatchet will be released relatively unscathed back home.
New teaser trailer for Hatchet. Too many quotes and not enough action for my liking. Not to mention the use of the phrase "post-modern":x
Am still looking forward to it though.

So I just watched Hatchet and I got to say it was a blast if you like your gore Victor Crowley doesn't **** around by hiding in the bushes waiting to jump out and say boo he gets right down to his bloody business right from the start and thats what i liked about this movie. No would be killer stalking there prey through out the movie slowly hiding in the shadows basicily it was hi im Victor im pissed and your all going to die. The strange thing is though is that i didn't find this movie scary i mostly laughed threw the movie instead of jumping at any scary moments. Maybe i just enjoyed it so much where i actually get to see the monster rip the limbs of the victims without a second thought. But the ending?? Come u guys could of come up with a better ending then that im guessing they defiantly want a sequel out of this movie but at least give me some closure geesh. All in all Hatchet was a great bloodbath that i could soak. 8/10

Kane Hodder's done other stuff anyhow... Am I the only one who remembers him in Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon? That was a fun lil' cameo he had going on.

I just watched Hatchet last night and thought it was great fun. An ode to the classic 80's slashers. I thought it could have used a little more suspense but whenever Victor Crowley came around it was an awesome gore-fest. Excellent fx as well.
