In DOTD 04 how did that head get in the ice chest?

In Dawn of the Dead 2004, at the end, after the survivors got away from the marina, I would guess in steves boat. How did that head get in the ice chest? That was one of the coolest scenes in the movie.

Since they found it on another boat that most likely had the same idea as them (get off the mainland) . Im thinking that when that person turned into a zombie its love one/ones cut it up and put it in there becasue of they being too emotional to just toss there loved one overboard. I know why would they cut it up instead? thats my theory.

Heres my theory, or mystery if you wish on the zombies head in the ice chest. 2 guys where enjoying a early morning fishing trip out on the lake. The zombie infections start. The guy who owned the boat was pissed that his friend didnt pay for any bait, or beer that was in the ice chest. The cheap skate drank more than half the beer. tired of his the drunk freeloaders antics he was about to say something, by then the freeloader turn into a zombie, bit his friend arm, pissed because there was no more beer, and that drunk son of a betch took a chunck out of his arm. Grab a machette that was on the boat, and chopped his head off, and put the head on ice. dump the headless corspe into the lake. turned into a zombie, fell over board, somehow wound up on one of the islands, chomp on Ken when the survivors landed on the beach. Here lies the mystery, can zombies swim?

No, zombies don't have the mental capacity to know how or even attempt to swim, I would know beacause I am a swim instructor. But, it is possible that a zombie could walk on the bottom of the ocean till it reached land or it could become filled with gases and float to the surface, then drift with the tide until it reached shore.

Do you know whats really screwed up about the end of DOTD 04. 1st Chips gets stuck in the malls parking garage with zombies, Has to run across the mall parking lot full of zombies, to Andys Gun Works, then at the end gets stuck on zombie island when the boat drifts there. Poor Chips

I'm thinking it was someone's loved one. Likely they found that if you don't destroy the head then they don't die so it's not so far a jump to the head is still living so when someone finds a cure why can't we just stitch it to a new body or something. Perhaps a little irrational but zombies are out and about eating people so anything can be possible right. Any way that's my opinion. Could have been something as stupid as some guy thinking about not having food, or bait to catch some fish, zombie pops out and gets decapitated oh look I can use this head for bait.

A question I had is why did they take two different shuttle buses. I know its a plot tool used to get them split up and to get one of the shuttles wrecked. But in reality, its a flippin shuttle bus, its made for carrying people :x

The reason the took 2 buses was so if something happened to one they could all jump in the other. IMO it was a very good idea.

Surviving on bits of chum and dead fish in the cooler, the head was able to stay alive long enough to be shot by the Crossroads Mall survivors.

woah that's pretty elaborate but it does make sense. it has to be something along those lines for that scene to work.

This is my favorite theory, would make alot of sense.

But at the end of the day put yourself in their position,
Say a few of you are escaping on a boat, one has been bitten but is hiding it. When they eventually turn the members that are left pin down the zombie and cut its head off.
The guy/girl who is standing there with he head of a zombie is in such shock that this thing is STILL trying to bite them they just instinctively throw it in the box and shut the lid.
Yeah, throwing it over board may have been the better option, but they were just working on reaction.
The disappearance of the rest of the crew could easily be explained by being bitten and turned by previously mentioned Zombie then falling over board or just trying to swim for dry land/safety.

It's just a guy going to the dock to do a little fishing when suddenly some nut comes running up to him and bites him on the back of the neck. The fisherman turns and fights off his attacker with a classic 3 stooges eye poke! Well his neck does hurt but he's not going to let that stop him from fishing. Hell, he took a sick day from work so he could go fishing! He loads his cooler filled with a case of Corona and a sandwich from Subway onto his boat and rows out to his favorite spot on the lake. After a few hours his neck hurts alot but maybe a few more beers will fix that, so he keeps fishing. Now he's been on the boat a long time,can't remember how long,can't even remember his own name! Opens cooler,no more beer! Can't remember nothing! All he knows is that his bladder is full and like any true fisherman he stands up to pee over the side of the boat. By this time his whole body is starting to rot but the bite mark on his neck is a large gapping hole spilling maggots onto the deck of the boat. When he stands up to pee he slips on the maggots covering the deck,trying to keep from falling overboard he leans the other way but now the weak point in his neck gives way and his head snaps off and falls into the cooler closing the lid from the impact. His headless body falls over the side and is consumed by the very fish he was trying to catch!

Perhaps a relative (or a non relative, not really necesary) after figuring out that a detached head wasn't much of a threat, decapitated a zombie to try to see if they could be reasoned with, or at least intimidated somehow. Of course, WE know it's futile, but it's not a bad idea in principle.

The survivor might have been infected in the process and fell overboard, or might have gone on a supply raid and got killed.

I dont think it would because the virus needs to travel through the boodstream, and if youre dead youre blood dosent circulate that often. so i dont think it would because the virus has to reach the brain to kill and reanimate the body, Unless the zombie bit the body and had direct mouth contact with the brain the body wouldnt reanimate.
ok now that thats over i'm sorry for the bump but i got a great idea while reading the other posts, it kinda goes along the lines of some of them. The zombie apocalypse starts, and a few survivors get onto a big boat. one of them has been bitten (remember they never figured out the bites infected people like the army base was saying they were safe and you saw them bringing in bitten up people) So they are all on a pretty large boat driving in the ocean as happy as can be. Then the one guy goes zomb and bites a few people. They think they know zombie movies and that if you just cut off the head to kill them so they do that. It was harder then they thought breaking the head off even though they restrained the zombie so they just pulled until the spine broke in a place and had the head. and like people said the loved one/ones of the zombie are too attatched to just throw the head overboard so they put it into the cooler. Then they arrive at the island that is at the end, Eventually the smell and the screaming of the head in the cooler becomes overwhelming so they put the cooler in a life boat and push it off to sea. Later the people that were bitten infect everyone else, that explains the island with zombies on it and the head in the cooler right? Oh, and their big boat probably floated away after it was left there.

Its a matter of safety. You can easily crash and screw up cars, busses and trucks badly in a city overrun by the living dead. Only using one bus limits you. You crash that one bus and you are on foot. Two busses is more safe. You crash one of the busses you can get on the other one and escape!

You should consider that if you ever get a group together on Z-Day and need to move about by vehicle. It could save your life!

I would say that some inquisitive cat like Sarah from the original Day of the Dead saw the opportunity to study a zombie head so they snagged it and kept it in the cooler to keep it fresh. They got distracted and left it in the boat for the credit sequence.

I think I would go with the idea that someone out on a boat saw/encountered a zombie, and reacted ... strongly. Probably with a good-sized item of cutlery. With the head still technically moving about, the body dead and there being little else to do, I figure they threw the head into the cooler (albeit carefully) and decided it was officially not a real threat, per se.

So, they took the cooler with the head in it, and .. pushed it off into the lake.

"Vaya con Dios, evil head thing. You're someone else's problem, now."

I don't know about you good folks, but ... cutting off someone's head, post-reanimation, then sealing it inside a cooler strikes me as all kinds of a personal statement.

Maybe the head was originally someone who owed the Mob, local organized crime element or an enthusiast of the Wisconsin Teamsters Union... we may never know.

Any mention of it on the commentary track for the DVD, by chance?
