Some people think that it is hysterical to bump into/hit/slap new tattoos for some reason. It's the same as hitting an open wound, they need time to heal.

Hopefully I will be booking up some more soon. I want to get my arms and legs finished before I move onto my front or back.

Mmm. What does it feel like getting a tatt?

Pain
05-28-2006, 04:11 AM
Well it stings quite a bit, but after a few minutes you don't really notice it too much. Sure you can feel it and if i said it didnt hurt i'd be lying. Usually when i am being inked though i spend most of the time chatting, watching movies or listening to tunes, so it takes your mind off the pain a bit

If you tattoo over scars, there will be a white discoloration underneath, but it's not bad. Same goes for moles, except brown

I have a question. Is it possible to tatoo over scars or not?

Tattooing over scars can be difficult but it is possible. It also depends on the type of scarring you have. Scars which are flush with the surface of the skin are the easiest to work with. Scars that are puffy or keloid can be problematic. Some people claim that having scar tissue tattooed is more painful.
Find a reputable artist (who does custom tattoos preferably) in your area and have them assess your scar and your design options. Be open minded about design possibilities, as they may be somewhat limited due to your scarring. Do not tattoo over scars that are still healing (pink or purplish).
Be prepared to have touchup work done a few times. Also be prepared for the expense of the touch up work. Most shops offer one free touch up and it's likely that you would need more than one. You can expect to pay 50% - 100% of the original price for your touchup work.

No, my friend Matt had his 4 year anniversary of owning his shop, Red Sea. He's been tattooing for 11 years, and he decided to have 50s day (50s tattoos for 50s prices). My boyfriend and I got tattooed for $13.78 all together. It was fun. Here's a better picture of it. Right after it was done.

Fantastic. Every time I hear about or see someone with a whole mess of tattoos, I think about a couple of my old patients. Frail little withered old men with what once upon a time were likely some badass looking tats. The last I saw of them, that tats just made them look even more pitiful and helpless.

I guess I just don't understand what the big draw is. Is it some form of addiction? I guess it'd have to be to tolerate the pain caused by having a vibrating needle shoved into your skin and have ink injected directly into the dermis, and then keep coming back for more.

its gratifying. the worst part is the healing process for me. not being able to itch it and being self consicous of them getting slapped or something. that and people thinking its cool to **** with em.

It is addictive actually. I also really don't care how i look when I get to the crusty wrinkly age. Let's face it old is old, and there is no buttering it up.

If they aren't for you then that is fine, and there are many folk out there that would no doubt agree with you, however I'm sure there are lifestyle choices you (and others) make that would baffle the hell out of me too. I just have slightly more tact.

HOO-HAA
10-24-2006, 10:41 AM
Yeah, Chewy... why so 'black-and-white'? What's *not* for you may be for others. Why's that a problem? Isn't *difference* an essential part of society?

Personally, I don't see the point in golf, but I ain't gonna interrogate golfers about their choice of leisure-wear (oh, that brown tartan!)...

As for tats... I love the whole creative expression...er...ism about it all. I refer to my appointments with my tattoist as 'arm-doodling' which it kind of is... only a little more permanent!

When(*IF*) I'm old I'll not feel 'pitiful and helpless' because I have tats. Why would I? What a ridiculous thing to think! Instead, I'll look at them with pride and hark back to the days I got them - the reasoning in my head that led to particular choices etc. with the design, and I'll treasure them. I'll probably bore the young folks about them, who, no doubt, will have laser tattoos on their heads by then!

I hope, personally, to have a hell of a lot more tats before I hang up the ol' tub of savalon... Here's to tats! :drinking:

My apologies. I wasn't trying to say that people who get tattoos are stupid or that tattoos themselves are idiotic. I'm not trying to make value judgements here. I was merely curious as to the reason why people do it. Seeing as to how I don't have any, I don't really grasp the whole thing. I wasn't trying to piss anyone off, I was just trying to understand.

From the responses you folks have made, I gather that it's because you just like having them. I can understand that.

No worries, pal. And can I just say that it's pretty damn rare and welcome to see someone big enough and mature enough to throw an apology out.

Perhaps us tattooed folk are a little over-sensitive? :)

Anyway, I guess it does just come down to being a creative thing. For me, a part of it comes with being shorn-headed, I guess (that's posh for baldy, by the way). I can't change my hair every couple of months, so instead I look for other ways to express my vanity... and tattoos and piercings are one way of doing such....

... But that's not the only thing. For me, it's also about the tattoos themselves - what they mean, what I want to remind myself when I get up in the morning and take a shower. Weirdly, it's a little like Memento. There are certain lessons in life I like to have inked onto my skin, in surrealistically presented japanese symbols, inbetween all those stars and spirals.

Oh.. and the pain thing? It's really a bit over-blown, in my opinion. You'll ALL have experienced much worse at the dentist. It's just another sensation to me now, almost welcome at times - or at the very least, a satisfying part of the process.

Personally speaking my ink does not have any particular significant meaning, they do however mean a lot to me. Each one does bring back specific memories. For me they add balance to who i am. I just wish i hadn't waited 10 years between my first and second tattoo.

That is exactally why I got my tattoos.
I got them to help remind me of how I want to live my life. I have the Chinese characters for Ying and Yang on my arms with a little custom fire around the edges. To me, they symbolize a balance. Something that I strive to have in my day to day life.

For me it's a hobby. I spend money to have my body decorated, and I fully understand why there's folks who just "don't get it", because in turn I'll never understand why someone would put 40k worth of auto parts into a car that's only worth 10k. And the reason I'll never understand is because it's just not my thing. Fair enough, if someone takes pleasure out of spending that dough on their Honda CRX, that's their right and I'm glad it makes them happy. Tattoos make me happy, especially when people see them and appreciate them. Yeah you get the people that shun you for them, but realistically speaking, do you really want to associate yourself with someone who feels so strongly against something you feel equally passionate for?

Anyway, getting my left leg started next Friday, I'll post some pics up when I get back.

I also agree with you guys 100%. I have four tats and I remember getting each one, who was in my life at that time and the reason behind getting them. My tats aren't really worth showing off as they mean more than they are an artistic acheivement. Lol...does that sound like I got inked by a crappy inker or what? Seriously though....I love them and that's what matters.

1. Skeleton on fire that looks like it's crawling out of my skin. - Right thigh
2. Celtic knot - Back of neck
3. Blue Faerie - Left ankle, outside.

An interesting thought Chewy, however I doubt I will be getting any more symbols for awhile.

The designs I am waiting for are for a Devil and an Angel that will probably go on either side of my body. These will be done in a twisted anime style.

After that I will probably add to the zombie on my leg with a moonlit graveyard scene. On the other leg I'll be having a futuristic Final Fantasy-esque landscape behind the young lady that presently occupies my leg:)

After that, my back which I haven't decided upon yet.

I like it! It's a little rough around the edges, mind. May need some touching up after it heals - preferably from a good tattooist.

I had one tattoo done in Liverpool, with my girlfriend. It was a kind of pop-art star thingie in red and black. Thing is, the tattooist was a hatchett man, meaning it hurt like **** and came out a little rough looking. It taught me not to just walk into any tattooist without checking. Hygiene should be your primary concern (and this guy was clean) but skill's important too.

The good thing is, W13, your tat would be easily touched up in minutes to look perfect. :)

Did you enjoy the experience?

warior 13

It's sorta supposed to look rough, it was a prison style tattoo, the outline was just cut into my skin with a pericing needle, but the fill was done professionally, decided to get it filled in later last night. It was origonally a prison tattoo outline of a Slayer album cover. And yes, I am going in to get it fixed up in 2 weeks when it heals up.

And it was a hell of a fun experience :)

All on my left arm, there's one more not shown around my wrist. One reads "Wednesday's Child is full of woe" and the other is my signature quote obviously. Not shown is a barbed wire bracelet that I'm turning into a charm bracelet for Jack & Sally heads.

I believe you like the use of the word pain...

This is the one I am getting on my left middle finger. The picture totally needs to be touched up, but this will do in a pinch. It's the Chinese symbol for worry and anxious and it's going on my left middle finger. I looked it up in a Chinese dictionary, so I know I'm right on the meaning.

Very nice!

Finally got the one on my middle finger...(yes, very stressed out about flipping people off...that has to have been the most fun I have ever had showing off a tattoo...do you have any idea how many people I got to flip off (who sorely deserved it) and they couldn't do anything about it? Hey, new tattoo...I wasn't actually flipping you off...ohnonononono... Suckers.) I will post a picture once I can figure out how to take one that isn't blurry...no point doing it if no one can actually make it out.)

Different places have different levels of pain. The ones on my chest and belly stung but the arm tattoos didn't sting too badly.

I will always hold that most people will have experienced worse pain at the dentist... :)

Captain Colostomy

Cheers! There are actualy two main brushes I use for the shading (if that's what you meant by washes), one to lighten and another to darken. It's a bitch to get smooth but easier than pencil (i think) and gives great results!

I don't think so, although i'm fairly sure they use the word 'parlour' on occasion:lol:

I just need to find a good artist to draw the design up for me as im pretty useless tbh :(
