Just like to tell everyone (I'm sure many of you know about it) about a great book. It's called "The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead" by Max Brooks
-I bought it off amazon...and wow....it is just so great...it's so fun to read. It has everything you'd ever think about from weapons training to zombie physiology. Wow, just so entertaining...I'd suggest it to any zombie fan or anyone looking for a fun read!
you can buy it here:
The Zombie Survival Guide : Complete Protection from the Living Dead (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1400049628/allthingszomb-20)
Edited by Dead Kev:  Just changed the link to my affiliate link. Everytime you buy through my links it helps with the upkeep of the site (and w/cool new ATZ projects), and is always greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Yeah, I'd go buy it. It is worth the cash. Do us all a favor though. If you get it, don't post huge sections of it in the Survival/Defense forum. There was enough of that before the Big Wipe. :D
If I have to here someone lecture about the effects of Solonium or whatever the hell its called one more time...........

It occurred to me that self publishing could work pretty well here for the writers here at ATZ. If someone could get the initial cash together (I think it's around $1000 U.S.) to self publish a book, the ATZ members would probably be willing to buy a copy each. There must be more than 100 of us who would pay $12-$15 bucks for a zombie book. It could work! And think of all the new Zombie fiction the world would have ontheir hands! We could whip'em and GET IT ALL!!!!

i bought it about a month ago and burned through 1/3rd of the book in one day. i foun it in the humor section...i suppose it belongs there...not humerous but oh well.
i found it really interesting, and actually...pretty brilliant. it really is like a survival guide.
recomended reading for anyone whose into zombies or (like me) has the idea to one day make films or write books with zombies in them.
the great thing for me, a wannabe writer, is that it sets limits on how far zombies can go and how far you, the writer can go.
truly a great book. wether you take it seriously or not.
Hmmm...I've got the Dalek Survival Guide....but Daleks would be much easier to survive given their inability to get up stairs....

i bought it last halloween and have read it twice...i also found it in the humor section...cause well its about zombies, cause well the notion of there actually being a zombie survival guide is,well funny. but it does teach very usefull tips, that would definetly come to play in a zombie world...it has usefull tips on basic survival to...its a great read.

My bro gave it to me for Christmas this year and I just finished it. I thought there were some really interesting points on underwater zombies which you never see in films and some great real life examples of attacks. Just one thing though - is solanum real? I've never heard it mentioned except in the Survival Guide.

I was expecting this before it was released (as were many of us), but stumbled acrossed it at a bookstore who for whatever reason had there's out before the release date, so needless to say, I was excited. :) I read it in a couple days and enjoyed it a lot. Very funny. I also got to see Max Brooks read, and got him to sign my copy while I was there. He played off his reading much like the book, with a certain amount of seriousness that just made it all the more amusing. Good times were had by all.

The illustrations are what make this book such n outstanding piece of humor. The type of art they used looks like it was lifted off of my old Cub Scout manual. This is one of my favorite books to fall asleep with. It was so great to see a few moments of Brooks in the special features of DOTD '04.

Awesome book. I really like the "survival guide" look to it: pulpy, coarse paper and illustrations that look like they were very roughly thrown together. I especially liked the illustration showing you to cut your hair. The guy has a mullet! It's a great book. I keep it next to my bed...

Sorry if this subject's been covered before, but I want to know if this is worth a buy.
I bought my cousin a "How To Survive..." type book before, on how to jump off a cliff/fend off a lion/crash-land a plane etc. - although a 'Humour' book, the info in it was done seriously.
I recently saw a Batman one... "How to slide down the batpole safely" and all that type of stuff which looks pretty mad!
Anyhow, as to this one... I've read a few bits available on the site... what's it like in general? Are there pics. there like on an aeroplane safety card? Is the info done 'seriously'?
Let me know folks...

I would definatly like to find some of the "sources" he used for his book. Specificly, I'd like to the the acutal manuscripts he claims exist of past zombie encounters. Has anyone contacted him and asked about those? Surely he'd want to other people to see them if the do in fact exist.

once again...this book is in the comedy section...there arent any "sources" or actual manuscripts because zombies do not exist. I know people have actually contacted him asking him this, because I heard it from his mouth @ a book singing in hollywood last year...He even joked about how some people really believe what he wrote as fact, and he continued by responding to them "its a book about zombies!" implying that its all a joke. I mean he is mel brooks son and wrote for a couple seasons on SNL; he writes comedy for a living! and the zombie survival guide, is the ultimate proof of that...its a book about zombie survival! that just screams "this is all in good fun!"

Greetings....new to the board. Figured, as immersed in zombie knowledge as I am, someone here still might be able to clarify things for me.
Been a longtime fan of the Zombie Survival Guide; even recently got to meet Mr. Brooks at his seminar for the book he's been doing. Never really know how much of the recorded attacks, etc, to take with a grain of salt. I read a thread on here about the supposed Lawson Film from 1965, and someone pointed out the book was fiction...however, this book isn't listed as such in bookstores. Merely in the humor section, along with other non-fictionesque books including political satire.
My question is: Mr. Brooks mentions names, dates, even cites the armies of several countries. Does this not qualify as slander? Wouldn't he be in even a little legal trouble for involving world governments and mention of people like Nikita Khrushchev with blatent lies? Just wondering, in a legal sense, if this book really can be excused as fiction.
And on an incidental note, it's hard to dismiss the list of acknowledgements including people who are thanked for clearing 'red tape'...a small point, to be sure, but hopefully someone here more knowledgeable in publishing or legalities can help me out with this. =)
Sambob
07-21-2006, 07:20 PM
The entire book is fictional. You can say things like that if the entire thing isn't real. I mean I have read many fiction books where the people in them have said many a thing about real life places people and factions. Dosen't mean that they are slanderizing them, just that they are telling a story.

And why the lack of classification in bookstores? Wouldn't 'fiction' be included with the 'humor' designation? As, well, a technically legitimate surivival guide if nothing else, it seems strange that area of it could be taken as reality whereas the rest of it is not. Not that I think you're wrong, I've just been unable to find convincing evidence either way.
Of course, 75% of me wants it to be real. ;)

The book is a satire/parody, hence it's classification under "humor". Plus, given Max's history as a comedy writer (not to mention who his father is) pretty much guarantees that anything that he writes, unless it BLATANTLY qualifies as part of another genre, will be classified as humor.

What's the difference between the Green cover and the White cover? Which one is the latest one? I been having the White one for a couple of months now so was wondering if the Green cover is the newer version...

I found a book at Barnes and Noble titled The Zombie Survival Guide, by Max Brooks. I don't know if any of you have read it. The book goes over everything from symptoms, weapons of choice, to living in an undead world. Some of it's pretty stupid, stating the obvious, whereas other parts seem interesting and helpful. Just asking if anybody else has read it, and what they think of it.

Yes I think everyone here has read it. It's a good book however if you search for it I'm sure you will find one topic already on it.

I had a feeling there was a topic already on it. Sorry for flooding up the forum.
