Here's a topic I want to start about illustrations that show zombies, here's a collaboration between a french and an Aussie animators/illustrators :

The sketch is cool, but I'm not a fan of the stuff he's wearing, too fantasy I would say (The legs are missing, looks like he's levitating)... I'd like to see your "trad" zombies sketches...

Again, why don't you draw the whole character?
You should draw the legs show all of it, it's a way to get the idea of proportions.
Anyway, continue and show more of your completed stuff.

I would say about the blood effect that you should have followed the body shape because there's not depth especially on the shoulder and the neck.

It's a funny illustration, the cartoony style works. For an advice I would say that you should be carefull with the "aero" gradient photoshop brush 'cause you miss the volume. Then, it's just a question of taste, here's a tuto (http://www.photoshop-school.org/tutoriaux/colorisation-dessin) (in french sorry, but quite understandable) .
But usually, the photoshop gradient is something we all must avoid... easier said than done, but it worth a try! I'm myself a bad colorist, I know how hard is it... check this chromatic generator (http://wellstyled.com/tools/colorscheme2/index-en.html), it's a really usefull tool for good looking color association.
