Below is the link to the new Zombie chapbook Wandering Flesh. It features 4 all new scenario based Zombie short stories, 2 Undead poems, and 3 pieces of gruesome artwork. At approximately 70 pages, it is very long for a chapbook and well worth the $6.50. I should know because along with Ron Shiflet, I wrote it!

I will personally refund your $6.50 if you think it sucks, and you return me an undamaged copy, with a receipt. Please give it a shot!!!

Does he have a website? Has he done any other covers?

Honestly, I like that cover better than the one I submitted to you. Did you wind up using mine on the inside, or did you pass on it?

REVIEW

OK.
First, I have to say I'm sick as hell of zombies. Really. If I see another housewife chewing one of her children's ears off I'm gonna throw a flag.

So, gang, if you're gonna write a zombie story, make it unique.

Thankfully, these two guys have written four unusual takes on our flesh-eating f(r)iends.

This 70 page chapbook starts with a coupla cool living dead poems then gets going with Hubbard's tale called "Hard Time" about a man trapped in a southern jail cell by a bigoted redneck while the rest of the world is devoured. All that he can see of it is from a tiny window overlooking a patio.Pretty grisly.

Next is Shiftlet's "The Old Ways Die Hard" about a long-standing hillbilly fued that "ends" with a massacre and the results feel like karma gone mad.

Back up to bat, Hubbard brings in one of the finest zombie stories I've even ran across in "Freak Farm: Cowboys and Zombies". Not crazy about the title but the story that follows reminded me of an old Gunsmoke episode crossed with Little Zombie on the Prairie. Rather touching little story.

The fourth and final story is a hilarious buddy tale, kinda an Odd Couple only with two Oscars and one, er, likes his chicken rare. In "Moon Pie and the Zombie" Shiftlet has created two endearing characters and I'd love to see them again.

Hubbard and Shiftlet bring the usual gut-snarfage mayhem to the table here but they at least make it interesting.

This Chap isn't with out it's flaws but it's an entertaining little intermission snack perfect for the late-night munchies. Damn, I've talked a lot about eating here...

GREAT freekin' cover art by Felipe Machado, too...

If you like reading The Rising, watching 28 Days Later, or playing Urban Dead....you need this book. We've only sold about 10 of the 50 copies so far. Not that great. If the others sell, we may have a second run through Shocklines. Any support is appreciated - John

Correction! You've sold 11 of 50... thanks to me. :D

However, I clicked the option to pay via PayPal, and it promptly said the following:

ORDER CONFIRMATION

Thank you. Your order has been successfully processed.

Thank you for your order. You will receive a copy of your order via email shortly. We will be in touch with you soon to update you on the status of your order. Please make sure your spam filters allow email from books@clarkesworld.com.

So, um, I'm not really sure how to actually pay for the book. I was expecting it to redirect me to PayPal or something, and it, um, didn't.

Just got my copy in the mail, and I'm a little over halfway done with it. I'm in the middle of the "Freak Farm" story.
I'm liking it so far. It's a great little collection of some quick zombie stories.

There are a few grammatical errors or point-of-view shifts in some of the stories, but nothing really devastating or distracting (although the word "zombie" was mis-spelled once :p).

All in all, I'm very glad I bought it. Thumbs up! :D

Thanks for buying it and for the comments. Some of the POV shifts may have been in my stories due to changes that occurred from submission to printing. In both of my stories, I originally italicized sentences that showed what the protagonists in the story were thinking. However, when it went to press, someone did away with the italics and printed the passages in regular type. That's why the stories sometimes seem to shift from a 3rd person narrative to a first person point of view. The changes annoyed me but there was nothing I could do about it after the fact. :x

Yeah, I wondered a little bit about that. However, there was one story in which the verbs all switched from past-tense to present-tense for the last page and a half of the story. I think it was the story "Hard Time".
I notice this sort of stuff because I just finished taking a creative writing course at the college I attend, so now it's physically impossible for me to read any piece of fiction without analyzing the heck out of it for style/continuity problems/grammar/etc. :p

I finished the book last night, and I got a chuckle out of the "Moon Pie and the Zombie" story. It reminded me of the game "Stubbs the Zombie" for some reason

"Hard Time" was one of John's tales. He'll have to explain that one. :)

Hard Time was supposed to feature a guy thinking back on his time in jail, and the subsequent Zombie uprising over the past few weeks (all in past tense). Then, the last bit of the story was supposed to be told in present tense real time. The editorial process was not the best and I think some of the 1st/rough got into the final product. As Ron said, though, it's hard tocrrect after the fact. You sign off on a proff (that is correct and showed the italicized mental thoughts in Ron's stories) and then the finished product isn't the same.!!!! By then it's too late

Hey everybody, thanks so much for your support so far. We could really use some more at this point. There are still about 25-30 copies left at
www.clarkesworldbooks.com/details2.php?id=HUBBWAND&big=Y (http://)
and in order for a second/updated printing to be done, we have to sell, sell, sell. The book has been nicely reviewed at Red Light District and we were appreciative to get a 2.5 at Horror Web (which is good for a Zombie book...trust me). It is being reviewed by Insidious Reflections soon as well.

Anyway - they make great stocking stuffers, collectors items, fan memorabilia, etc. Plus they are only $6.50

One of the stories in the book (Freak Farm) will possibly be made into a motion picture. I can't tell you exactly what is going on yet, but I have a friend who has written 3 screenplays, one of his movies starred Gary Oldman and Ving Rhames, and he's looking for a small scale story to make into a low budget film. He has a proven track record and he likes the story.

Please give us a shot! Thanks and Happy Holidays

Any other thoughts on the chapbook? There are ideas to publish a follow up, with the addition of other stories and possibly other writers, in paperback. But that would still be a ways away. I saw some of the copies of Wandering Flesh for sale on eBay so they are definitely getting out there.

Just wanted to say "Thanks" for those who bought a copy and a "Please" for some of you who haven't gotten one yet. I want to sell them all out and I think you'll get your $ worth. - John
