View Full Version : Are there any real Zombie RPGs online (not story writing message boards)

Are there any real RPG's out there? All I see are a bunch of story writing message boards calling themselves role-playing games. A message board is nothing of the like. The "The Dead Will Walk the Earth" message board listed in the forum looks kinda like a real game with a bunch of character statistics and stuff, but can't find any rules or anything. So really have no clue what it's all about.

Urban Dead (http://www.urbandead.com) is a Massively Multiplayer Online RPG. It's still constantly being updated with new features and repairs for little glitches here and there, and it's real fun. Only downside is, you don't see the character you control, you just click various buildings on the city map grid, and you arrive there, and you don't get enough action points (for movement, attacking, etc.). Check it out, though.

I played Urban Dead for about 3 days and found out how overmatched the game is against a person playing a zombie, and it’s only a little better when playing a living one. The game is bland and tedious :x I think, nothing like what I’m looking for. What I’ve been looking for is a real role-playing game. Like the pen and paper D&D games, but on the Internet. I used to play a GURPS Traveler game on WebRPG and that was pretty fun, but sadly didn’t last long (typical of online games though).

Agreed.. I'm making my own..
Question : What would make it interesting and addictive to you that would be different to anything UrbanDead has to offer..?

Intresting suggestions.
RE: Graphics
It wont be 100% text based, not after I've finished the beta version anyway, which comes after the Alpha version I'm working on now.. There will be some graphical content which I will develop over time.. I'm keeping that under my hat for now until I have the bulk of the game code completed.
RE: More weapons
Infinately explandable.. As are the items.. When I put them in.. I've only just got map movement sorted out about ten mins ago..
RE: No AP
I can't remove the concept of action points from the game otherwise it would be mayhem.. People who play for say 3 hours a day would have a massive advantage over people who only played for 30 mins a day.. If someone wanted to of course they could log on and just play for the entire day, max out their character and kill hundreds of other players characters who may not be logged on..
The other thing I have to consider is the load on the server, the more AP I give players the more actions take place in the game, the more changes occur to the database and the more bandwidth it uses in a month..
How about an increased number of AP to start and certain skills allowing you to increase the number of AP you get or the regeneration rate/use rate of the AP you have..?
RE:More realistic
What do you mean by more realistic..? There is a fine line between a playable game and a game which is so realistic it puts the majority of people off playing..

I've been playing it for less than a month, but it's actually lopsided power wise to the zombie side. Yes, in the beginning, everyone's weak, but that's an rpg. You start with a weak character and build levels.
There are problems with the game, but sometimes there's no easy solution.
1. People either want to be a zombie or alive, they won't play realistically. Really there's no solution - people will kill themselves or wait outside a necrotech building to be revived.
2. There's no way to permanently kill a zombie. I understand the reasoning, but it makes zombies too powerful. This is why I've stopped running with the zombies and started necrotech. I always run with the underdogs. It makes winning more satisfying. If you attack and kill a zombie, all that you cost them is 10AP or 1AP if they have the ankle grab skill. You need to revive them to slow them down at all. If they have brain rot, tough luck.
My solution is levels of brain rot, higher level necrotechs can revive a lower level brain rot. It's not perfect, but hey, it's a game.
One idea - add explosives into the mix. I ran into a group of 210 zombies at a mall. Running or becoming zombie food were my only choices.

That's not difficult to implement at all..
The game I'm working on at the moment has gone from being 100% text based to partially graphical and since I started brainstorming with the other guy that's working on it with me (I say working he just tells me what's crap) it's now got a 2D tile based environment that you can move around in. It has a few bugs, but nothing a bit of thinking can't solve. I could build in cars, or anything like that.. I can do any type of status change like you mentioned quite easily too..
Sadly, there's only me coding and creating images for this game at the moment.. So progress is slower than I would like..

It is not what you would call "masive" but it is a very neat game with more options as you might think on the first impression.

I know this isnt an online game but its probably the best free zombie RPG we are going to get. Its called Survival Crisis Z
"Survial crisis Z is an open ended intense survival experience that is nearly as much RPQ as it is arcade. Make money or steal it. Buy weapons or pick them off a fresh corpse. Work for the leaders of the post-apocolyptic ruin or have them work for you. Marauders, terrorists, drug lords and heroes are all equals here. They are all either on of us or one of them, warm blooded or cold, survivors or monsters."
The game consists of 3 chapters but the first one is free to download and the map is created randomly when you start a new game. Anyway, i will guarantee that you wont regret downloading this game it rocks!!

I'm thinking what he was looking for ideally was a sort of "Resident Evil Online" game. The MMORPG market (specifically the higher end games which are pay-to-play) has exploded in the past few years and there's only one problem present with them. The market is flooded with Fantasy based games, with Sci-Fi coming in a distant second. However, there are virtually NO MMO's in the Horror genre, not to mention any Zombie ones. Of course this is a problem.
I think there is a large potential following for this that has gone unrecognized. Dungeons and Dragons Online will be the first MAJOR table-top to MMO conversion. Perhaps if it is successful, All Flesh Must Be Eaten will come up with one, or even worst case, Resident Evil Online could be in the future. I'd play it.

I downloaded SCZ like two weeks ago, Its definetly worth it. Really fun, fast paced, intense gameplay, the only problem is the graphics in my point of view.
Definetly worth the download.
