Am i the only one who thinks this movie is amazing? i own the 2 disc uncut dvd and i think its amazing, i love the whole forest of resurrection and the characters.. the acting may not be the best but its just so awsome.. its got comedy, gun-play, martial arts and hella good violence with a sweet and unique story, not some oh zombies just come from nowhere or a virus broke out, its actually got a pretty damn good plot, if you HAVE seen it i suggest watching "Down to Hell" then "Versus" because Versus is actually the sequel to Down to hell and it will help you understand the film better, come on.. you know you people love it!

if there has been a topic about this im sorry, im new and didnt see it on this page and i just got done watching it again and its so great

BTW- Sorry for any typos, i had a root canal and im wacked out on pain killers :loon:

I've been a fan of this film for a long time. So much so, that I sought out a copy of Down To Hell because Versus was originally to be titled Down To Hell 2. Anyway, I'm glad it wasn't given that title as Versus is far superior to Down To Hell in many aspects.

One of the few foreign films I watch in English rather than the intended language. The dubbing was just really funny, but mainly the subtitles were so off (I watched with dubbing and subtitles on at same time and were both very different).

Very gory and awesome indeed.

I'm looking forward to Battlefield Baseball. Zombies, baseball and dismemberment.

I'm looking forward to Battlefield Baseball. Zombies, baseball and dismemberment.

Then you may be disappointed.

The zombies aren't that zombie-lie.

There is very little actual baseball.

And the dismemberment is pretty brief.

However, if you go into it looking forwards to a bat shit crazy Japanese film quite capable of melting your brains then you might be pleasantly suprised (or you still might think its bloody awful) ;)

i liked the movie alot, but i have to admit being tired during certain points in the movie as things got a bit overdone. The movie could have been a bit shorter and still carried the same weight. I do recommend seeing it.

While I loved the first 20 minutes of Versus, it didn't go much further than that for the rest of the flick. It was a fun ride, but I won't be purchasing it. I dont think it has the "I'll watch this movie at least 50 times before I get sick of it" feel necessary to join my collection.

I liked this movie but think it's overrated. Still it's better than 90% of the dross out there.

i was very disappointed with this movie. i was intrigued at first, interested for a short time (i'd say til the end of the first battle in the forest), but comedic or not (and i say not), given the nature of the action sequences (repetitive, boring, and stupid) i quickly tired of it and was completely let down. i've never walked out on a movie, so i stuck with this til the end too, and it was just way too long (and i love long movies) and drawn out, again...it was too repetitive. how many times do i have to watch some idiot grab a gun away from some bigger idiot?? and why does a guy spend a few minutes acting like a bug (with sound effects to complement his actions!)?? it wasn't cool or funny. it was excrutiatingly painful to watch.

good plot idea though :)

when i first heard about Versus i picked up the first import copy i could find on Ebay a few months before its commercial release here in the US. am i missing out not owning the special edition? i would consider picking it up or renting it from netflix if theres some decent additional stuff.

as for battlefield baseball, i have the import of that film also. its funny and gorey as hell, but its no zombie film lol.

Most of the extras aren't worth worrying about but I thought the making of documentary and the two commentaries are good and added extra information on their thinking (and I realised I'd missed some of the details like who can actually kill the zombies). They also seem to have a good laugh and they seem to spend a long time taking the piss out of each other - in the cast commentary they just insult Tak and then Kitamura says "nope I'd have cut this bit." Kitamura also comes across as a bit like Raimi - a film nut and you could imaigne having a great evening with him sitting around watching movies and being a completely movie nerd ;)

What I'd probably recommend is you wait around for the Ultimate Edition - it is available via import but is pretty expensive but I've heard rumours that it will get a full US release - as will Down to Hell. Pos. around the time when the sequel comes out I'd expect.

I want to like this film more than I do. I mean it's a good early feature that shows some potential for better things from the director...but as an overall movie I find it lacking. I do like the twist ending, though.

As for Battlefield Baseball...the best thing about that film is the 'Greatest Ramen Jackass' short included on the DVD...

This movie rocks. Nobody diss Versus. Kung fu zombies, gun weilding zombies, gun weilding kung fu zombies, dismemberment, blood-spray, zombie windshield splattering, and even A GUY GETTING BLOWN TO PIECES BY AN ANTI- TANK GUN. A sequel? Bring it on.

Yeah I'm with you on that one. It didn't quite live up to all my expectations, however I enjoyed Azumi, and absolutely LOVED Alive.

I wish they would hurry up and release Down to Hell. I've been holding off on getting the import for way too long now!

I have the 2 disc special edition of Versus and love this flick. There's nothing like martial arts, sword fighting, gangsters, and zombies.

I like listening to it in the english dubbing cause I can't stand having to read subtitles unless I have to.

I wished that they made a sequel to Versus.

I recommend buying the region 0 Hong Kong DVD of it.

True it doesn't have the dubbed audio track and the subtitles are a bit Engrishy at points but it has the short film predisesor to Versus, 'Down to Hell'.

To a genre fans this is like a release of Evil Dead with a copy of 'Within the Woods'... why they've never done that I have no idea.

Much like 'Within the Woods'... this film is not nearly as good and as a stand alone it falls flat... but it's the chance to see how the idea was conceived... grass roots and with a Hong Kong import only running a few bucks... even if you own the 'Ultimate Edition' I suggest getting the Engrish Hong Kong version because the short film alone is worth the cost of admission.

My 2 disc dvd of Versus has a short film too on it....I would have to find it but it's like a 30 minute film.

The second DVD begins with a montage of behind-the-scenes footage entitled “Evolution Of Versus” (8:10) and another montage of scenes from the Cannes promotion (8:09). There is also a behind-the-scenes featurette (26:38) in Japanese with English Language Subtitles that features various cast and crew interviews. This is followed by an interview with the film’s Editor (12:36) also in Japanese with English Language Subtitles.

The “Making Of Versus” documentary (24:41) features a lengthy interview with Co-Writer and Director Ryuhei Kitamura in English where he describes the origin of the project, which was originally envisioned as a sequel to his “Straight To Hell” feature film, but soon took on an identity of it’s own. Kitamura describes the challenge he was faced with when making a film that he felt would pay homage to all of the American genre films he loved in the 1980s in a Japanese film industry that he feels has become too apathetic in the shadow of big budget Hollywood productions. So he set out to prove that you don’t need a lot of money to make an action horror picture as good as any out of Hollywood if not better. He denies the influence of video games or anime in his film “Versus” because he feels anime and video games owe their influences to cinema already. He also goes into length regarding telling a simple story visually without too much exposition and sights the early Arnold Schwarzenegger action film “Commando” as one of his personal favorites.

Next is a videotaped short film that serves as a side story to “Versus” entitled “Nervous” (6:29), which features two of the supporting character actors from the film. There are two more featurettes with one showing some behind-the-scenes training at the production office entitled “Team Versus” (1:04) and another montage of preview footage (4:31). The promotional trailer (1:42), theatrical teaser (: 20), and theatrical trailer (1:52) for “Versus” concludes the extra features directly related to “Versus” on disc two.

Nervous is a POS that was made for some event. The featurette with him mentioned how he originally meant it as sequel to this film and yet they didn't just include the original on the disk. I find this odd because it doesn't have an official release anywhere... though it can be found online and if it can be found anywhere and there is even a little interest hong kong will throw it on a DVD. You have to love the freedom which comes from such a 'open-ended' view of copyright... still I suggest going with Hong Kong for it... the short will likely never see the light of day in the US apart from these regionless imports and bootlegs sold at comic book conventions (burnt from the files you can probably find online.)
