Ok just about everyone picked Dawn of the Dead 1978 as the best ZOmbie film ever made. Most would agree with this.
This debate would be what is 2nd greatest Zombie Movie everyone here got a different opinion about what it should be.
Name what you considered 2nd best and explain why, i mean really explain in details why?

My own personal choice has to be Dawn 04.Why? Well because of the big buget, great effects, and I love the story and the hoplessness of the situation some people may not agree but the choice is mine. :drinking:

I vote Return of the Living Dead 1 as my 2nd greatest film.
A biological chemical created by the army turns the dead alive. Movie Started out with punk rockers set in the 1980's. 2 workers acidently break the canister open unleashing the chemicals in the air which leads to another accident that awakes a cementary of the dead.
The zombies can not be killed in brain, you must completey destory the entire body which makes it a challege.
Notable scenes: The zombies ambush about 20 cop cars, the zombies break through a police barcade and kill all the cops (this would be later copied by Resident Evil 3 video game), the military decides to nuke the city (again copied by Resident Evil 3 video game) the kids being chase in the cementary (Exciting and scary at the same time)
Like that of Night of The Living Dead, the survivors board up the windows and barcade them slefs inside the moruatry trying to figure out how to reach the cars to escape for help. The zombies are fast and are able to think which makes it harder then that of night of the living dead. Fready screams as he slowly dies, makes it even more of a horror film
There some humor scenes in this movie but most of it is serious horrror and the challege of trying to escape zombies that really can not be killed unless the entire body is burned to ashes is really a challege and awsome at the same time.
This movie created a different type of zombies and first to create the running zombies.

I hate to violate the threadstarter's rules here, but I'll just have to place my vote for "Night of the Living Dead ('68)" while deferring my rationale until tomorrow (its my beer night - tomorrow my wife wakes up with the kids). But in summary, I believe that NOTLD '68 was the scariest zombie ever movie made, and I've tried to watch all films in the genre that weren't pure camp.
But, to respect Zombie2005's criteria, I will post a lengthy rationale for my choice tomorrow (not unlike MacArthur's promise to return to Corregidor).

I don't think that the original Dawn of the Dead is the best movie ever made. Sure, it was a lot of fun and great, but I didn't get that special feeling like I had with the remake. Maybe because it was the real serious zombie movie I've watched. It helped me to enter this wonderfull world of decomposing, wandering, flesh eaters.
It's kinda hard to place movies for the best, because there are a lot good movies out there that deserves the 1st place. Well, I will try.
The best movie = Either SotD, Dotd '04, RotLD, 28DL, DotD '85, or Undead.
The second place = well... I... I think... :x
Well, If there are zombies in it, it's good enough for me.

Hmmm... Second best... Well...
Day would have to be second for me. I thought the gore was there, the acting was there (though some would disagreee), and the completely social undertone was there too.
To me, that would have to be it.

I know about the top 10 vote, majority picked DOTD 78 as best choice.
Now I wanted to know what was second best.

I didn't realize that Emps officially tallied the results of that poll.

Emps constructed that poll for his Revenant magazine, and there's more top ten votes on his site. I think the tally will be going in the first issue...he'd be able to shed more light on that than I would.
Tell you what Zombie2005, why don't you do this: Come up with what you think are the top 30 zombie movies and then make 3 polls for them (because ten is the number limit with the polls.) Try to make them even--as in, don't put all the dead movies in one, or all the most popular movies in another--mix them up. Then, after a period of time, tally those and make a new top ten and poll those again. The tally of those would give you a good idea as to the placement of the movies. Start with at least 30, though, that way no one can say "Oh, you left out this or that." I think 30 should be enough to cover that which isn't totally obscure.

Ask the guy who created the top 10 vote to tally up the votes. I really dont want to start a new one, with him spending much time on that vote.
Zombie-A-GoGo
04-30-2005, 11:17 PM
He'll be tallying it, and he'll put the results in his zombie magazine, not here. Oh well. If anyone else would like to take on the polling thing I suggested, that'd be cool.

Well, as I'm of the same mind as Zombie 2005 (and I suspect many here are as well), I'll assume for the sake of argument only that DOTD '78 is number one and proceed with justifying my selection of NOTLD '68 as the second greatest zombie movie.
Okay, here goes! First, I think that the story itself was just perfect. A brother and sister visit their father's grave, encounter a "person" who kills the brother, and the sister flees in panic to a farmhouse where she encounters a take-charge alpha male who fortifies them in said farmhouse, while additional murderous beings arrive to besiege them. Then, they discover selfish persons more securely holed-up in the basement of their fortress, make a doomed sorty for aid, then self destruct such that they are all ultimately overrun by the besieging zombies, except for the alpha male who adopts the strategy he previously derided. His reward - a bullet through the head and a trip to the corpse burning pile. Brilliant story!!
Next, being filmed in black and white was so creepy, and not only was it suggestive of the original '30s horror films, but it also hid any flaws in the make-up of the zombies, which were clearly more evident in the the color film DOTD. The soundtrack was simple, but effective. The gore was great and so far ahead of its time. I still remember how creeped out I was when I first saw (I was 8) the zombies munching on the remains of the young couple after their pickup exploded - what a cool scene!
And finally, one thing that sets this movie apart (for me) over many of the popular zombie films is the complete lack of camp, let alone any humor at all. I'm drawn to the frightening aspect of zombie films - I don't want more than a slight bit of humor (e.g., hillbillies partying as they shot zombies in DOTD). My exception to the "seriousness" criteria for zombie films is "Shaun of the Dead", which I consider a masterpiece film on many levels (I love British humor!).
So, in summary, NOTLD '68 was scary, the story was riveting throughout, and it was ultimately tragic!! (yes, I am a lawyer, so please excuse the melodrama!)

DotD04 is probably my current #1 - it's slick, fast-paced, and the idea of civilization falling so completely in such a short span of time really got the adrenaline flowing.
Second place would either be:
ROTLD - it introduced me to the genre, so I can't help but regard it fondly. Because I saw it as a kid, the concept of the ravenous undead hunting for brains freaked me out like no other horror film had (and thanks to a horror-loving grandmother, I'd definitely seen more than a few by that point). I loved Frank and Freddy - characters that started off as comical before infection set them onto two separate, yet equally dark, paths. There were many unforgettable scenes; the homeless guy getting munched on by a naked Trash (I think that's what her name was), the panting, tail-wagging dog specimen, the struggling, bagged cadaver, a very animated Tarman, and my favourite - the zombie asking dispatch to 'send...more...paramedics'.
28 Days Later - I didn't like the ending, and yes, it's not a zombie movie per se, but all the necessary 'survival horror' elements were in place for me to appreciate it as such. I loved the brutality of the death scenes, the almost instantaneous rate of infection, the scarily easy method of transmission, and the hide n' seek battle between Jim and soldiers at the rainy outpost was beautifully shot. The soundtrack was likewise enjoyable, and has since become a permanent fixture in my 'music to write by' library.
But of course, my choices are restricted by my noobishness; I've yet to see many of the movies regularly discussed on the boards, and with offerings like LOTD (and those that will likely follow), my 'top ten' is bound to go through a complete overhaul in the coming months.
I would have to say that at the moment my 2nd favourite after Dotd 78 would have to be Re-Animator (a popular choice i know!) or Shaun of the Dead.
I'm not going to give reasons behind these choices as (my choices) change from day to day.
I love the genre, and as long as they keep making zombie movies i'm gonna keep watching them, shite or otherwise! It is so difficult to rate my favourites after GAR's movies. I just hope that i can place Land up there with the others once i have seen it!

To Furrygirl:
28 Days Later is a Zombie movie. Reason some people may not like it because of its seriousness and no humor in it. Its one of few zombie movies with no humor.
ROTLD was the first zombie film i ever seen also as a kid, after that i fell in love with the genre :)

I wasn't sure if 28DL was considered a 'true' zombie movie - I've encountered a lot of people who like to argue the point because the afflicted weren't totally dead yet. (Eh, they were deadish enough for me ;-) )
And yay! Another childhood ROTLD fan! And here I was thinking I was the only one - neither my sis or the neighbourhood guys I watched it with are even remotely into the genre. Glad to know I wasn't the only corrupted kid.

No, but if you scroll through the posts in the Zombie Movie Top Ten (and one rotten one) (http://www.allthingszombie.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3217) thread, I'd say it's pretty obvious (at least on ATZ anyway) that Dawn '78 is the champ. Perhaps you're referring to sources other than ATZ, that emp is including for his finally tally? Well, there you got me. I wouldn't doubt the selection of Zombie movies, many of the younger horror enthusiasts have watched, only date back to that last five years. Wouldn't that be something to see House of the Dead have a run at the title? :puke:

Yeah, I think I mentioned somewhere above that there are more top ten votes on his Revenant site in addition to here at ATZ.

I'd say though, there is less unity amongst ATZers over who's #2. But if I were to put my money on it, I'd say Night of the Living Dead has the edge.

I liked the original the best, and the remake was just as good, if not better in many ways so it gets my number 2

I'd have to say that Dawn '04 is my second favorite, follwing Night '68. However... I must say that Shaun OTD comes in a VERY close third... Hm, this is tough because there really are quite a few top notch zombie flicks out there, each with their own style and feel. I really do believe it's (zombie flicks) the strongest branch of the horror genre. ... At times it can also be the weakest... House of the Dead... oi...

*Sipping...I mean skulls beer bottle.....I agree , armless chinese zombie runner in DOTD04 was awesome!
The whole 28 Days Later debacle over being true zombies is interesting and does make me wonder why no one compares Universal Soldier to zombies........as they were dead soldiers reanimated to be super soldiers.
Sure the actors and movies were lame but the idea was different?
If this has been discussed before I apologise, could not find the subject in ATZ search.

UniSol.... now thats a movie I haven't heard about in a while .... let alone in relation to Zombies... Your absolutly right... the one thing about zombies is that in reguards to Romero-ish (loosely put) is the need to eat flesh... lets forget about fast/slow, smart/dumb... and get down to basics..... Are they dead? and do they eat the living flesh? In UniSol they certainly are dead and I think Dolf had a hankering for ears....

The second greatest zombie movie ever is Dawn of the Dead 04. This is solely because of the opening sequence. Nothing will ever beat the scene where the lady falls out of the window and looks up at total chaos. Image waking up to that!

I will second that vote. I love ROTLD 1. It blends comedy and horror to produce an awesome movie. Sure it may look dated and some the acting is questionable, but it's a great movie that must be in any persons library. Best Buy sells it for ten bucks and it is definately worth it.

Sorry peeps, this would actually be my first choice and any full-on fan of the genre would definately, and unarguably have to pick between this film and DOTD `78. Also, if "Zombie Flesh Eaters" isn`t mentioned....

.... Also, if it`s not mentioned, I`m wasting my time with lightweights and I`ll not be posting here again.
BTW. Land of the Dead might require even more pondering.
Zombie Flesh Eaters is another title for Zombie or Zombi 2 if i'm not mistaken, and quite a few members here enjoy it a hell of a lot.
So i'm sure they'll take umbrage with the implication of being labelled a lightweight.
Also no need for the aggresive post :)
