View Full Version : City of the Dead
I just got a new issue of Game Informer today, and what do I see? A full article on a game called City of the Dead. This is a classic zombie movie-based game, kiddies. It is a first person shooter, and George Romero is heavily involved in the project. It takes place in a city totally overrun with zombies. They can be sismembered limb by limb, but a head shot is nessecary for a kill. It has co-op, but if a partner gets bittin, you have a limited time to decide what to do before he becomes a zombie.
"Sorry, Fred. You got bit."
*BLAM*
I'm totally looking foward to this.

With Romero involved this should be slick. Did the article say when it will come out? and what game systems it will be on? I don't mean to pick your brain but have you seen screen shots how does it look?

This game may never happen, it all depends on Land. It is one of those lower based things that gets hyped but sometimes never reaches the light of day (think Duke Nukem Forever). Since it is with a smaller company, this tends to happen as new people go in and out of the project always changing it.
This was announced almost a year ago with American McGee (who is responsible for the Alice in Wonderland game that's twisted and dark, named Alice) basically saying it will be the goriest game ever made. The original artwork had a child zombie like girl holding a chainsaw and I think a human head. And George isn't just involved with it, but was basically a deal of McGee asking George to make them a game script. So he has more than a hand in it, it's his creation.
And he also has a deal with Hip Interactive to create games using his movies. Whether they will actually be Dawn or Day games is unlikely, but are supposed to be in that style as well. And this may have less of George at the helm, but he is in direct contact with the development process.
First of all, this has nothing to do with American McGee. That game died long ago. This is a brand new title due out in spring of '06. The graphics look phenominal, and they really reflect his films.

Not true. It's one and the very same - American McGee was the catalyst for this game happening at all. He came up with the concept (in collaboration with Romero) and sold it to Hip Interactive - who are now publishing the game, with Kuju Entertainment developing.
Here's American's own words on the subject:
"The deal (with Hip Interactive) is one in the same with City of the Dead. My company represented the license and shopped the concept to games publishers. The result was the deal that you reported. At this point we're done with our part in the transaction. Hip takes control of the license from here, assigns a developer to it, and creates a game. We move on to representing new licenses to publishers and continuing work on our other game and film projects."
They started it, I guess, but they arn't actively developing it.

i really like the "art concepts" but the actual in-game graphics didnt quite convince me...the characters looked to "cartoony" for my likings, it actually kinda looks like a knock-off of the house of the dead series; which im hoping its not.

For some reason, the Game Screens just don't look right. Too Clean, if you ask me... there should be trash and grime everywhere. Blood, Pools of blood, streaks of hands through it. all sorts of papers and TRash flying around. and Bodies of the Dead who didn't reanimate because of damage to the train or who where completely Devoured.
The Zombies look Friggin cool. they seem rather tame on the blood and gore. but all we have to base this on is three little screenshot. Look like this will be a fairly awesome game. I'll be sure to rate it...

Gamespot have posted a hands-on preview (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/cityofthedead/preview_6125877.html) of Romero's City Of The Dead, along with a pile of new screenshots & concept art (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/cityofthedead/screenindex.html?page=1).
Personally, I think the graphics are rather sub-par (hopefully they are from the PS2 version, despite being an X-Box preview). Still, it's the gameplay that counts - so I'm hoping it'll more than compensate for the dated visuals.

In the Game Informer article, you'll notice some repeat zombies in some shots, where the same zombie appears in a different scene. No big deal, since I'm sure they'll have a variety in the end game, City of the Dead.
Also, there's going to be zombies that supposedly crawl really fast and jump to speed up the action. I wish they just stuck to a ton of zombies, where the numbers are the real thing to fear, and not some Resident Evil-like mutated zombie freaks who run and jump after you.
But I haven't played it and things could change by time it comes out. I hope they fit at least 40 zombies onscreen at one time. That'd be sick.
There's supposed to be a mall in this game too.
I wouldn't mind a 3rd person camera view of your character, to see how getting bit slowly changes you into a zombie. Unless you can see your character, I think some of the fun gets taken away. But on the same coin, a first person view really amps up the tension, putting you right into the shoes of the horror. There's no dis-associated yourself from the action by going into a 3rd person view.
Overall, I look forward to any zombie game. Now how about GTA: Zombie World?

its not really going to be tense or scary as what uall think, if u read gamespot.com u get more pics on there too and i have the E3 trailer, its more of a blast fest style game (hence the camera replays and a zombie spinning into the air after being shot) which gives u bonus missions in a very arcadey style, and yeah there are diff types of zombies, fire ones, normal, running, crawling and i think zombies which throw stuff at you if i remeber reading properly also a policeman zombie shoots at u coz he remebers firing his gun. still looks good tho even if it is more blasty and kill everything rather than tense and story driven. edited: the bonus modes are like gimmick things like in soul calibur ie kill zombies only with certain weapons style things or stuff like that. it looks good yeah but not great in my opinion, i prefer something scary rather than extreme

I was enthused about it until I read a hands-on article regarding it over at Dread Central. They said it was just a flimsy shooter in which you get "hit combos" and other stupid arcadey crap (like missions where you have to kill zombies to keep your health up - hardly faithful to the 'rules' of the Dead universe). I was hoping for a serious zombie shooter that really did Romero's films justice, but indications seem to be that this will not be it.
Still, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt until the reviews start rolling in.

This looks fun. But unfortunately only for a few levels. How long can you play i if its just running around and shooting? Leave it to Romero to involve himself in a game that's just using his name.
I need something a bit more immersive than a 1st person shooter.

Found the Dread Central article I'd read. Here's some excerpts:
"What he’s saying here is that he’s out to make an arcade-y FPS out of the greatest horror universe ever created. "As you go through the story, you unlock the arcade mode which is the meat of the game. It’s all about how much you can score! We’re very, very arcade. We’ve got kill chains, we’ve got combos, we’ve got bonuses...everything that makes it feel like an arcade game."
"What do some of these arcade missions consist of? How about half-gravity? Yes, they’ll cut the gravity in half, like the moon. How about missions where you have low health and only regain health by shooting zombies? Missions where you appear to be sinking in quicksand, a’la Soul Calibur 2’s Edge Master mode? Of course none of these even remotely exist in the Romero universe, but that doesn’t appear to be a concern for Kuju."
"While the weird effects are saved for the arcade mode, the style of play, including bonuses with silly, arcade-like titles such as "KILL FRENZY" flying across the screen when you kill a certain amount of zombies in a row, is pervasive even in the story mode."
You can read the full scathing preview here (http://www.horrorchannel.com/dread/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=1715&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0). If they're right, this game really is going to suck quite a bit...

"While already revealed by Kuju, Hip Interactive Europe confirms today that it will no longer publish George A. Romero's City of The Dead as as it had concerns over the quality of the development. Hip Interactive Europe confirms the continuation of its publishing and distribution businesses across Europe and confirms the upcoming releases, this Fall, of its line-up with titles such as Rugby Challenge 2006, and Garfield "Saving Arlene"."

Also, unrealisitic weapons. I see a Dragunov and modded shotgun and handgun. But I think they should have just modeled under plain jane more realistic firearms. Even if they don't have the licensing, just make a likeness and change some small things and the name, and as John Madden would say "BOOM!"
