From Fangoria.com
April 13: TOOLBOX MURDERS gang unleash ZOMBIES
Busy screenwriters Jace Anderson and Adam Gierasch just sent over the cool poster art for their latest project, ZOMBIES, which reunites them with their TOOLBOX MURDERS and MORTUARY director, Tobe Hooper. "The movie’s slated to start in June, and we’re hoping to bring some new stuff to the world of zombies," Anderson tells Fango. The film will be produced by Nu Image, which first brought Hooper and the writers together on CROCODILE. Look for more updates on this project soon. —Michael Gingold

This isn't the same movie, but I'm not sure on the status of Hooper's involvement with Brew at this point. Hooper's in post with Mortuary, in production with Brew (supposedly according to IMDB), and starts shooting in June with Zombies. That's a lot of work. I think Brew is being pushed aside for Zombies, or so it would seem.

There's no way Tobe Hooper started anything in June. He's still working on the FX of Mortuary (showing for the first time in the Fantasy Film Fest in Germany next week). I think that "Zombies" is actually Mortuary and that they combined Tobe's ideas w/ those of Adam and Jace. The website kicks ass for the film www.mortuarythemovie.com and I heard that it will be release in theaters...yes, a Tobe Hooper movie back in THEATERS...in October this year.

When I spoke to my friend Angie Bettis, who starred in "Toolbox Murders" and was suppose to star in "Brew", she said that "Brew" isn't going to happen....ever. The IMDB has a lot of bad information on it, they got Angie's birthday wrong too. That site is just maintained by fans, so the same bad rumors just keep getting passed around.

You guys, in general, seem to be pretty optimistic about this film. I agree that Hooper's name carries with it a certian degree of respectablity (which, for me, was renewed by the gloriously camp, old-school splatterfest that was The Toolbox Murders), but sadly in this case, what the headline (Tobe Hooper) giveth, the small print (Nu Image) taketh away. :-(

Nu Image is coming out with some good stuff like The Black Dahlia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387877/), directed by DePalma, so it isn't all bad news.

I don't know, I don't think Tobe has really shown much. Texas Chainsaw is good and all, but there are a lot of one-hit wonders. I mean Ben Affleck won an oscar for screenwriting (not directing, but still). Furthermore he directed Ep. 3 of "Masters of Horror" which had some zombie-like developments and it SUCKED, so I'm not sure how to feel. I'll see it ASAP, but I don't know whether I'll be psyched about it like I was for Land, Shaun, 28 days later, and even the Dawn remake.

I like what Tobe Hooper has done for the Horror genre over the years, with TCM, Salem's Lot, Poltergeist, hell, even The Funhouse, with that circus freak monster.
Even said, I haven't checked out Toobox, but he seems to deliver good characters, interesting stories and some good horror. Looking forward to Mortuary and hopefully, Zombies, if it's made.

Inexpensive region free players can be purchased for roughly $45 at Target and Wal-Mart. The player is called, Cyberhome. Feel free to email me for the remote control code that frees up the region free capabilities.
As for guidelines. They're located at the top of the forum right between User CP & Members List. http://www.allthingszombie.com/forums/faq.php?
Jim of the Dead
12-23-2005, 05:13 PM
Damn, I had no idea I could get a region free for that price. I need to wait a few days to avoid the guilt of buying things for myself so close to Christmas, but consider one purchased. That's going to cause my zombie budget to go up a few notches (and yes, I do have a zombie budget --> I try to keep it to under $100/month and new Resident Evil games don't count).
The Blind Dead
12-23-2005, 08:01 PM
The Cyberhome's are fun little region free players BUT...you get what you pay for. They don't last long so my suggestion would be to purchase two and use them ONLY for foreign releases. Casual DVD watching will burn them out faster. I've had mine for almost 2 years with VERY minimal play and it's done fine. The great thing is, they transfer PAL to NTSC as well so it's a truly region free player.

I may have figured this out. This (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0470000/) is "Zombies" and Hooper is no longer attached apparently--I believe J.D. Robinson posted this link much earlier. I guess they haven't updated the poster, but that IMDb posting was update in November and that's not so very long ago.
Someone in this thread suggested that "Mortuary" was the new title for "Zombies", and apparently that wasn't true, but we ran with it. Then this thread stopped being about "Zombies" and started being about "Mortuary", which technically means it went off-topic.
And if Hooper is no longer attached to this project, I suppose this thread should be locked, since all it's doing is confusing people.
Bad Zombie Night
01-01-2006, 12:17 PM
Yeah I'll admit that I haven't been keeping right on top of this development... I wasn't sure if the movie had a name change, or if that Mr. Hooper was involved with two separate films... I've done a little digging myself, and I've come to a bit of an impasse here... I've looked up all three films, and I've found three separate plot lines, so I know if Zombies (2006) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0470000/) is related to other films or not... I'm certain though that Mortuary is the real deal.
Here's some of what I found.
Mortuary
Plot:
Mortuary begins with a family (a mother, son, and daughter) that move to the small town of Arkham, Massachusetts in order to start a new life. They move into and take over the business of the abandoned Fowler Brothers Funeral Home, that most of locals fear is haunted. Just when they start getting business, and making friends, weird things start happening.
There is something that is lurking beneath the town that raises rotten corpses from their graves, as well as the freshly dead bodies sent to the home. It begins to take over the town with a disgusting blue-green ooze and seems to embody the living. It seems to feed on death itself. Only those not yet affected by it can try to defeat it. Everyone else is one of them.

Plot:
Recently widowed Karen Tunny and her two daughters, Sarah and Emma, move to a remote mountain home which Karen has inherited from the family of her late husband. However, she is unaware that the home is situated near an old mine, the site of an early 20th century tragedy in which many children were buried alive...

No, they didn't say why - though the fact that they don't say is ominous in itself. It's different writers too, although originals are still listed on imdb. The only thing that's the same is the production company and the cast.
Well, there is no listing for it on IMDB. So, who knows?

Was the 'Forsaken' the one with Winona Rider and an Exorcism? If so that had some serious creepy moments. I hope so. If it is I hate to say it but I think it is a step up from what Hooper seems to be making lately. But if it is that movie I am excited. Of course if it's not.
FOrsaken was a vampire chase film/road movie, that I thought was done pretty well. I haven't seen it in a while, but I remember liking it more than I thought I would.

Thank you. Yes that was one of the best of the 'punk' vampire movies. It had a kick ass Lance Henrickson and a pre HBO Mormon mini series Paxton as a biker vampire. That director will do a stand up job. I miss the excitement of a year or two ago. We had no hope for Dawn remake and all the hope in the world for 'Land'. What a reversal. What hope? I'm tinking maybe I should grab tat ol whirlee bird and ...

Speaking of Zombies, and Tobe Hooper - what's the skinny on "mortuary"?
I know it just came out on DVD - am gonna go rent it today. It's strange though that he was working on another Zombie film, that's seemingly unrelated.
Oh yeah, the JS Cardone film screened recently, at UCLA (allegedly). It's not about Zombies at all anymore, it's about children that got buried alive in a mine accident, and became evil, and rose 100 years later to eat a small family.
No decomposition though, which makes it pretty lame IMO. Decomposed baby zombies would rule.
Love to hear what anyone has to say about Mortuary tho...
There is a review for Mortuary here (http://www.allthingszombie.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8507&highlight=mortuary).
I thought it was ok, but nothing special, infact for the most part I found it quite annoying.

I can't wait to see this movie. If it's the same caliber as The Forsaken it should be a great zombie movie.

Lance and Bill weren't in The Forsaken. They were in Near Dark, a far superior vampire film.

The good news is that this movie will no longer be called "Zombies"... it's to be renamed "The Children". I know it sent shivers up my spine too.
Boy, they're churning out zombie movies by the dozens. Seeing Tobe Hooper's name attached to it does give me a pretty good feeling. Let's cross our fingers.
So wait...Tobe left the project? Bummers.

Mortuary has elements that might be mistaken for zombies by mainstream viewers (the dead do walk, but they r not coming to eat ya), but these r not really zombies. Decent enough film (except for some cheesy cgi at the end). It was written by the same two people who wrote Tobe's last few films (Crocodile & Toolbox Murders).
Is Tobe going to make an actual zombie film or not? I've been getting conflicting answers to this question everywhere I've checked. Curious.

He was supposed to with ZOMBIES, now titled WICKED LITTLE THINGS. For some reason he dropped out of the project and J.S. Cardone took his place. It was also written by Jace & Adam of Mortuary. Very similar films as a matter of fact.
Technically, Hopper did do a zombie film. His episode of MOH entitled, "Dance of the Dead" featured "zombies."

Dance of The Dead??
I'll have to check that one out ^_^
