Spent the past three days learning how to climb poles as part of my new job. It's not as easy as it sounds. There's a lot of technique to it. Of course, trying to do it in cold & windy weather just makes it even more difficult. I've fallen twice so far, first from three feet and then from about seven. Luckily I had my safety harness on and attached to the fall arrestor both times. I've made it about fifteen feet up so far. Tomorrow I have to go up to eighteen. My legs are killing me, I'm exhausted, my face is windburned and I can't get warm. Regardless, I'm still thrilled to finally have a really good job. This company and the union take excellent care of the employees. I also work with some great guys; everybody looks out for each other.
Wow, where have I been?

Wow, where have I been?
Luckily you haven't been in the same place where I was.
I'm off the gaffs for at least the next six months. I sustained an injury to my right knee and hip a little over a year ago; it didn't seem like that big of a deal at the time, but all of the climbing aggravated it. Then there's all of the muscle work involved in climbing using the gaffs. This morning before we were to take our final test, we had to climb up to the top of a stepped pole. I got up to the top of it (about 22 feet) and my legs started twitching really badly. That's not a good thing to have happen when you're up that high. Once I got back down, my instructor told me that he wasn't going to let me climb any more due to the problems I was having. After a few phone calls to HR and my manager, I got a transfer to another department. I'll still have to climb from time to time, but only on ladders and stepped poles. This other position doesn't pay as well as lineman does, but it's still pretty good money and there's lots of perks to the job.
I'm really not disappointed. I was only planning on being a lineman for a couple of years while I racked up computer certs and programming knowledge, and then I was going to slide into a network admin position. This new job is actually a little closer to the position I want to move to. I will miss the guys I trained with; they're a fine crew.

Spent the day removing the tiles from the bathroom. They were there since before we moved in, about six years ago. The plasterboard they were stuck onto was like cardboard in some places. Whoever decorated it in the first place liked to do things on the cheap. Now that's done though we will be without a bath or shower for the next week so it's off to grandma's to get clean. Which I don't mind as my grandparents have an awesome shower.

Worked the graveyard shift last night... Before I left for work though, I noticed my front tire, on the passenger's side, was half flat... I drove it to work anyhow, and filled it up using the compressor that we have available there... The next morning, not to my surprise, I found it completely flat... I suppose all my tires are due to be changed anyway, but I filled the tire up again before leaving for home... On the way, I swung by the supermarket, and picked up some Stop-Leak... I don't know yet if the Stop-Leak is gonna work or not, so I may have to spend tomorrow getting my SUV fitted with a new set of tires.
If anyone has any suggestions about what tires to get or which ones not to get, I'm open to any advice you may have to offer. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y152/bzn123/Smileys/Characters/1bnz_smiley.gif

Today was a day out of work, still went to colelge though. Cramming session of revision for my second and final Microsoft exam tomorrow. Turns out I knew more than I thought I did. Last night I was thinking that I might have forgotten most of what I had learnt when the course finished about 5-6 months ago. Now I'm realising that I have carried on learning while I was working. I didn't do too bad in the practice exams that we went through.
So hopfully all will go well and by some miracle I'll scrape through like I did last time.

I had left over steak for lunch.
But I had to eat it off a plastic fork. no knives!
I tore the meat off like an animal, I even snarled a bit.
My teeth are sharp, my jaw powerful
I finished off the morsel in the hallway, I stripped and howled for a while.
Rubbing my scent on the doors.

Went to my new work site today. Since my transfer was so quickly arranged last Friday, nobody at the new place knew who I was or where I was supposed to go. I sat in on the video class for a couple of hours before one of the site managers pulled me out and dropped me into a overfilled tech class. Because they don't have space for me there, tomorrow I'm supposed to go to a different facility over by the airport in Philly where I'll spend the next month or so. This'll be my fourth site within two weeks. I haven't even been to the facility where I'm supposed to be working out of once I finish my training. Despite the fact that my new company and I are off to a rocky start, I'm still thrilled to be working for them.
I'm just curious as to where my paycheck is going to show up this week...

Congrats, Sam. I'll be real impressed when you get your CCIE.
I got to climb up a stepped pole this morning while it was snowing. It was actually kind of peaceful up there, hanging 20+ feet off the ground while fine snow was falling all around me. After that, I spent all day at work watching training CBT's. I almost snapped when I had to watch the one on the basics of electricity. I knew it was going to be bad when I was introduced to the little animated character "Alec Tron" (electron. get it?) Some of the training vids I've seen so far look to be geared toward 7th graders. No biggie. They can put me through all the training they want; I'm making good money for sitting there being bored.

My day is kinda fun actually. We got hit by a blizzard yesterday afternoon that went through the night so V-Day, the one holiday I hate passionately, is snowy white and under a foot of snow here in the Great Lakes State. Shovelling, thats whats called for on the official Mush Day, loads of shovelling! But you know what, I got a real big smile on my face anyway. I'm not sick anymore, (I had the flu over the weekend) and I feel like I can once again take over...er... take on the world.:)

My truck got stuck in the snow at work today. The road going up to the facility wasn't plowed, the road inside wasn't plowed and the parking lot wasn't plowed. Joy. I got there about 0630 and there was some sleet falling. When I came back out at 11 to go to lunch, my truck wouldn't budge. Rear-wheel drive on a pickup is not good when there's several inches of snow on the ground. I spent most of my lunch break trying to break up the ice under my truck with my tire iron. A couple of the guys I work with helped push me out. When I left to come home this afternoon, the sun had finally broken through so everything else had melted a bit.
I broke out my camera when I got home to snap some pics of the trees and utility poles; they're all covered in ice right now. Kinda pretty, actually.

Just got home from the ER. The kidney stone that's been bugging me on & off for the past couple of months finally nailed me when I was out on a belated V-Day dinner with the GF. $80 worth of food transfered from plate to doggie bag as soon as it hit the table.
This stone is 7mm x 5mm, which is too big for it to get out by itself. That means I have to have surgery... again. yay.
This is going to be a blast. I have to call HR at my new job on Tuesday and tell them what happened and see if I can get medical coverage early if I pay the premium out of my own pocket. If not, this is going to be expensive. Also, I couldn't have asked for better timing. New job and I'm in training right now so I can't take any time off without shafting myself. I'll probably have the surgery done as soon as I finish training which will likely piss off my new manager since I'll have to take a week off and then won't be able to do any lifting for 4-6 weeks. Oh well... It has to be done. On the plus side, I won't be climbing any poles until this is all over; climbing while using narcotic painkillers is an accident waiting to happen.
As for the ER visit itself... The lobby was packed when I got there. Of the 40+ people present, only 3 or 4 actually looked to me to be in need of urgent medical treatment. Everybody else either just had a cough, the sniffles or were giving off the impression that they felt icky. The most noteworthy patient I saw in the lobby was a woman who looked to be about 7 months pregnant. She had this huge mole on the left side of her face. I mean it was HUGE! It looked like there was a leech stuck to her head. I felt like Austin Powers in Goldmember; I didn't want to look, but I couldn't help myself.
Now that I have two tabs of Percocet in my system, I'm all nice and relaxed. I do believe that I'll head off to bed; this evening was a bit more eventful than I prefer.

Spent most of the day in bed in a painkiller-induced stupor. My cat succeeded in waking me up around 5:00 by trying to climb inside of my shirt. Since I was too wiped out to do anything useful, I spent about 90 minutes getting my knife back into usable condition. After that, I ate the prime rib that I was unable to get to last night due to my trip to the hospital. Since then I've been browsing through Wikipedia reading up on some of the old Marvel superheroes that I'd lost track of since I stopped collecting comics back in the late-80's.

I just got placed on involuntary unpaid medical leave from my new job. Because of the kidney stone and the narcotic pain meds I have to take right now, my instructors felt it was unsafe for me to be climbing poles and working with wiring. When HR popped by for a Q&A this morning, they pulled the rep off to the side and had a little discussion with her.
Long story short, I'll be able to return to work and start training over once I have a medical release from the doctor after I have surgery.
My appointment to see the urologist isn't until March 5th. That means that I probably won't be able to get back to work until the beginning of April.
Yes, I'm annoyed. Yes, I'm disappointed. However, I do realize that this is just another one of those bumps in the road that keep life interesting.

I just got the bill from my ER visit last Saturday night. Over $5400 bucks. Ouch. I'll be giving the billing department a call about this. I got charged for two CT scans at $2250 each. They had to run me through twice, the first time was for a "calibration". Screw that. I also got charged $13 for two pain pills. When I filled the prescription at the pharmacy down the street, I paid $11 for 20 of the same pills.
$916 just for walking in the door. Damn.
That's one thing I do miss about the UK chewy, and that's free healthcare. Hope it all works out for you.

I'm not worried about it. I can put in for medical benefits with my new employer before my 90 day probation period is up if I pay the monthly premiums, and it's supposed to be retroactive to my date of hire. All I'll have to do is submit the bill to my insurers.
I was just taken aback by the amount due in relation to how little was done while I was in the ER. I talked to two nurses, an orderly, an admissions clerk, a doc and the CT tech. I peed in a cup, received two pills and got run through a CT scanner. From the time my butt hit the gurney until I was discharged was about four hours. $5400 just seems a bit excessive.

I got a good start today. Went up and talked to the instructors who put me out on medical leave and they gave me the skinny on who they talked to and what was said. Through them, I also found out who my manager is supposed to be. I put a call into him this afternoon to see if he can get this straightened out for me. He'd best call me tomorrow morning or I'm going to go looking for him.

I spoke with him a couple of hours ago. Nice guy. He told me that yes, the company is trying to shaft me. As best as I can tell, they're in violation of federal labor laws for terminating me due to an illness that was out of my control. I have to put in a call to my attorney later to see what I should do about this.

More good news regarding the upcoming surgery. The place that's going to do it is willing to shave about 60% off the charge for me. All I had to do was explain my situation to them. Don't be daft I wasn't using their antivirus or anything like that, I know better than that. I was using Norton Ghost to make an image of my hard drive. Unfortunately it somehow cocked up and changed C: to G: which meant windows wouldn't boot.
If you or anyone else knows if a better/not Symantec related product that can create images of hard drives I'd appreciate if if you let me know. (prefferably free but it doesn't really matter)

I finally got my surgery scheduled today. I go in on April 2nd. Wonderful. Almost four more weeks of sitting on my butt before I can get this stone zapped. I'd forgotten how long it can take to get a elective, non-emergency surgery done. My supervisor isn't going to be happy to hear this. Oh well... It needs to be done.
I came across the radio station that I used to always listen to when I lived in Reno while I was poking around the web last night. They also do a web broadcast, so I've been listening to them since I found them again. Of all the classic rock stations I've listened to, this one is my favorite. It's good to hear all of those familiar voices again.
They used to have a billboard out in front of the station showing a dog with a gun aimed at it's head. "KOZZ... Listen, or the dog gets it."

As expected this pissed her off even more so when i got inside she started again until she decided to piss me off by trying to OD!!!
so i spent the rest of the night trying to make her puke up the damn tablets which had made her pass out on a few occasions!!

Hey Otis, welcome back!
Today, seeing as it's St. Patrick's day and the day before Mothers Day I've been in town buying some DVD's for my mum (Host and Pulse), then I went and drank some guinness with a friend I haven't seen in ages. It's been a pretty good day.

The day is looking up. We successfully replaced the water pump in resident evil's car and my radiator will be replaced tonight/tomorrow. Both cars went out at the same time. Of course I guess it's just Murphy's Law. And I think I forget to mention that I'm getting married next Saturday. Hopefully this will be the only "bad" thing to transpire.

IT WAS GREAT! I had to be at the armory at 8:00 this morning for the drill competition. We competed against three other drill teams in individual arms, colorguard, platoon, and squad, and one first place in all of them! I had such a sense of pride. It was definetly a rush. An odd thing happened when my GF and I went to the bookstore after dinner. I picked up one of the Walking Dead books and a copy of Monster Nation. When I got to the register and laid them down on the counter, the clerk looked at the books and then looked at me and asked if I had an escape plan for the impending outbreak. I was totally floored.
I told her all about ATZ. I think we're going to have a bookstore clerk from New Jersey as a new member here soon.:)

Subtlety, my young one. Making them fear physical violence will only result in some of the more foolhardy becoming aggressive towards you. Make them fear your knowledge. It takes a soft touch. If done right, you'll never see any of them; they'll scatter like mice as soon as they hear that you're near.

alright until i was talking to a mate on msn he was asking me all these questions about what we got up to the past couple of weeks, which i thought was strange yeah we had been pretty hammered so i thought oh well maybe i knew somethings he didn't know. So again i ask y half a hour later me making a jokes about i would so give her the best 2 second of her life and stuff like and i used to have a nick name for her the beast etc etc
And guess what it was his ex wife she had logged on to his msn account and i've basically told her lots of stuff about him and i think i've messed things up big time. I even making jokes about hitting her fella cus he threatened me in a bar on Monday night.

My GF blew a gasket earlier today. She asked me to come along to visit a sick friend in the hospital this afternoon. So that she wouldn't have to come back home to pick me up, she asked me to come along to church with her (she's Catholic). Since I thought I'd get to sit in the car during the service and read my latest issue of Heavy Metal, I said "sure."
We got there, and she all but threatened me to get me to come in with her. She said something about Palm Sunday, and she needed some help carrying extra palms back out to the car to take to her hospitalized friend. Not knowing anything about Catholicism (i.e. what a "palm" is) and hoping to avoid a nasty confrontation, I agreed thinking I'd only have to go in long enough to grab the stuff she wanted carried back out to the car.
Boy, was I wrong.
I got inside and she was leaning on me hard to get me to stay for the service. I've got no problem with churches or church-going folk, but I do have a serious problem with the Lord (long story), so I no longer attend services. My GF knows this and knows the exact reasons I have, yet chose to try to force me to attend the service. When I finally put my foot down (while the service was already in progress - we got there late) and told her there was no f***ing way that I was going to sit through an hour of this, she tried to coerce me by saying "Just stay. It's not like you have to believe." When that didn't work, she tried to imply that I was somehow going to mess up her nephew (who was already there with his mom) by walking out of a church service.
As it turns out, I had about 90 minutes of time in the car to read my issue of Heavy Metal - 60 during the church service, and about another 30 during a very quiet ride to the hospital.
