Zombie Movie Top Ten (and one rotten one)

OK I'm sure this has been round the block a few times but as discussed here:

the idea thrown about a while ago about creating a zombie magazine has really got momentum. The first issue will be looking at zombie movies (as seems appropriate - there will be other overviews of other media in later issues so never fear ;) ) and we want to get one of the most comprehensive votes on the most popular (and least popular ;) ) zombie movies around.

As the magazine aims to be the voice of all online movie fans we hope to roll this vote out to interested forums but we are starting here (I cleared it with Dead Kev).

Anyway some instructions:

We are conducting a vote for the top ten of zombie movies and the most rotten one too. So some quick guidelines:

1. Voting - just post your top ten films and the worst one. If you don't want to vote for a full 10 then feel free to only vote for the number you want to. If you don't want to nominate a worst film then you don't have to. The only main thing is that you can't vote for a block of films like:

1. Romero's trilogy
2. All of Fulci's films

as it makes scoring it tricky and as there will (hopefully) be a lot of votes if its too dificult we'll call the "ballot paper" spoiled and move on so try to be clear about which film you mean (the main IMDB title is handy esp. given the confusion over zombie film names) and a year would be handy if it is unclear - we'll assume dawn of the dead is the oriignal unless you specify 2004.

2. Scoring - I'll give the #1 film in the list 10 points and so on until the #10 film gets 1 point. The top ten will be decided by the total of votes - it favors the more popular films but is the fairest method without getting overly complex and arcane.

3. Cheating - we reserve the right to disqualify films that people are campaigning to get a high place (we have no problem with people voting for their own film but if they get all their family and friends to give it #1 then it is rather spoiling the intention of the whole thing - to get a realistic survey of what people genuinely like).

4. Time limit - it'll run for a couple of weeks. So get the votes in as soon as possible.

If you need help with jogging your memory we have prepared a list with as wide a range of films as possible (its a zipped HTML file -its 20kb compared to the unzipped 400kb)

We also aren't looking for a "but that isn't a zombie movie!!" debate - we've tried to be inclusive and everyone will have their own definitions. We can have this debate in the future but at the moment it distracts from the point of the exercise ;)

If anything isn't clear ask away and we'll clarfiy things but bottom line just drop in your ten favourite movies from 1-10 (or if you don't want to name 10 however many you want to list) and your nomination for the worst one (if you want to).

I will be recording the votes as things go along (so it isn't such a massive job at the end so give it some thought first as I might record your votes down before you edit and update the list so it saves wasted time, etc. ;) ).

Also feel free get other forums involved (you can use the quoted text above) but check if its OK first and, obviously, let us know otherwise we won't be able to record the votes ;)

3. Zombie (Cheesy as hell, but if you get into it at 1 o'clock at night with the lights off, it will make you titter)
4. Dawn Of The Dead Remake (Good action/horror movie from a first time director)
5. Day Of The Dead (It really freaked me out, not because of the gore or horror, but because of how humans can snap, and how many can die because of ones stupidity.)

There are a number of reasons (as I've asked myself that question as I don't want to devote so much time to an obsolete venture) and I suppose there are lots of answers:

1. That we won't be working in competition with sites like ATZ but in parallel and we want to tap into the voice of zombie fans across the Internet.

2. There is still (unfortunately) an added kudos to producing a magazine and we hope it will open more doors.

3. They are different media and while a website is dynamic a magazine is static and so they operate in different ways. I have had a few chat with Dead Kev about working with ATZ to provide the best of both worlds (but that is still all up in the air).

4. Just wait and see ;)

The Dead Hate the Living is a close second on the stink scale... We're talking a fart that could clear the Vatican during Midnight Mass in December... Return of the Blind Dead, well, interesting director choices for the "ghost" horses...

Honorable Mentions: Dead Next Door, Children Shouldn't play with dead things (the clothes, man, talk about vintage), House of the Dead (yes, I'm one of the only people in America that liked this movie. A movie based upon a childrens ride at Disney World is the greatest zombie film ever, no wait, in fact it is the greatest movie ever. Forget the great originality of Romero and his socially revealing masterpieces. They suck compared to Pirates of the Carribean. I'm going to Disney World right now and I'm gonna ride that stupid ride until my brain no longer functions so that my mindset will be as enlightened as the great royal who knows better than any of the rest of us. What!? I at least got some kind of an entertaining experience with Raiders but with AD, I felt like I was a zombie. My whole body ached and my head hurt beyond comprhension, it was terrible. I honestly don't think anyone can make a worse zombie film if they tried.

The film only cost $12,000 to make but I have seen indie zombie films that had a small budget of only $1,000 and were 1000 times better than Alien Dead.

Cheating - we reserve the right to disqualify films that people are campaigning to get a high place (we have no problem with people voting for their own film but if they get all their family and friends to give it #1 then it is rather spoiling the intention of the whole thing - to get a realistic survey of what people genuinely like).

LOL - I can't see anyway to give a taster without giving anything away.

You'll just have to wait (or hack into my computer and find the spreadhseet with all the numbers in ;) ).

The actual winners are largely fairly obvious what is most impressive is the sheer breadth of the films voted for (74 people have voted and there are 76 films that have got votes which is a good slcie - even if it is out of 500+ movies) showing what excellent and broad tastes people have :)

While thigns separated themselves out into distinct chunks (the #10 film got twice as many votes as the #11 but 11, 12 and 13 are only a few votes apart) so although thing stratified quite early and votes seemed to have largely soldified these groupings (suggesting that the numbers are a reasonable representation of a larger sample) within these layers the places switched around a lot depending on the vaugeries of one or two people's votes.

All fairly recent, I know, but the part of the genre I have been exposed to is only now just turning to a style I really like. Of course I like Romero's commentary on society, but what really turned me on to this Genre were the Resident Evil games. In particular Resident Evil 2. IMO one of the best video games of all time. Hopefully my webgirl will have a website up for my film soon and my editor will get a trailer put together so you guys can really get an idea of what I like in the zombie genre. Suffice it to say, I like the more action oriented films, sort of like "Escape from New York" with zombies. If you have any suggestions, let me know.

My worst Zombie film, and there have been some bad ones (Zombie Bikers, The dead hate the living, etc...) is "Hell of the Living Dead". God, it was terrible.

For worst ever I'd say City of the Living Dead. I usually like Fulci's work but this movie sucked big time aside from 2 scenes 1) the part where the dude digs up the girl with the pick axe made me laugh hysterically. 2) the part where that chick is in the car and she :puke: (if you've seen it you know which scene...don't want to give it away) but those two moments are the only two scenes I liked. Actually the drill scene was kinda wicked too. Anyways I expect more from Fulci and this move came across as a real bushleague effort from and otherwise outstanding(most of the time) director.
