Zombie-A-GoGo

Hello,
A lot of times some subjects get reposted, causing a number of threads to be lying around about one thing. They may have been posted a day ago, or months ago. The best thing to do is do a search of the topic you'd like to start. Just click the search arrow at the top right and type in the basic words, or movie title, etc. If you find a thread that fits your needs, by all means, use that one please. It keeps older members from having to sort through things and also helps cut down on DeadKev's clean up when pruning time comes around.
Also, when starting a thread, and this goes for everyone, having the subject somewhere in the title helps people do a search.
Thanks, and happy posting!
Just to see if this sort of thing is helpful to members here, please use the poll above to let me know.
Is this a good suggestion, bad, or don't you care? :)

I have found that sometimes searches don't report a specific thread. For instance on another board I ran into the same problem. I agree though it is frustrating to see multiple threads on the same topic. Although I have to admit that some threads become soooo monstrous that they themselves go off topic.... so there is something to be said about a new post on the same subject.... But that is another discussion..

Yeah, the search function isn't perfect, but it might catch some stuff. Whatever gets through and is double posted, older posters here might remember the other one, threads can be merged, etc. It's just nice to keep the place tidy.
I for one am all for old topics being brought up, that way new members can discuss everything as well. There's certainly nothing wrong with that. Having to keep track of three conversations about the same thing, though, is a little silly.
If we all work together and do what we can, it should be no problem. :)
Of course it is! I do try and have a good look around before i post a new thread. It does get a bit annoying when there are about half a dozen threads on the same subject :x
I voted that it is a good idea.
wasn't there already a thread about this........just foolin'

Some may think this as a bad idea because it sometimes gets irritating when there are a persquillion posts on the topic, and eventually it goes off-topic, and I doubt that anyone likes sifting through all the pages, and it is a lot easier to start the topic.
Would I be right in saying this? Or even close?

Nah I think that it depends, if it's really old or has gone off topic, i think a fresh start is a good thing. I'd sure hate to be the one to do a search and reanimate a 2 year old thread. :)
But if it's a brand new movie or whatever your posting on then definately read/search first.

While I do agree, it does get tedious to read a hundred posts, it is perhaps the best thing to try and keep the number of threads down. If a thread goes off topic, steer it back. There's no reason why there can't be a couple of different little side topics, after all, it's message board and not chat. One thing though, on other boards I have posted on, ppl always got annoyed if you reiterated another's response, I have yet to see that here, but I think that everyone is entitled to respond to a thread, even if they are just saying the same thing, because we all say things differently.
All in all, I like these boards, and they seem to be very well organized.

What's wrong with reanimation? Jeffrey Combs would be very angry with you. Besides, just because a thread is two years old does not mean that a new poster would not have a relevant response. Most of us still talk about Both Holy Trilogies today. (I.E. The Romeros and Star Wars)
BTW since we are on this topic, I was interested in polling everyone about their thoughts on Day of the Dead. I'm sure it's been done, so I was wondering if somebody could point me in the direction of the thread. I did a search and it was mostly Dawn and Land stuff, with a little Night.

Yes. Listen to this guy. It is a very good idea to search before you post or at least ask others if they've ever seen a thread on a movie or topic before. I myself should have done this before one of my first threads...but did not. I am still reveling in dishonor. (Though I have not had as many locked out as Zombie Ninja.)

i think it's generally a good idea to use the search feature, but as was stated above, it doesn't always work. also, as someone posted on the lotd thread today, they "didn't want to read through nearly 200 posts to see if an article about the movie had been previously mentioned" so i don't see the harm in posting within a thread something that may have been stated already. i also don't see the harm if, say, someone wants to start a thread called "cholo and kaufman" for example. i can see a thread on a specific topic related to a larger one existing on it's own, and i would hope that thread wouldn't get locked and redirected to the official one. i was a little nervous joining such a large forum, with people who've posted thousands of times. i figured it would be very clickish, but i'm happy to see there's a nice group of regulars here who seem to just want to keep things as orderly, simple, and friendly as possible. i like that. so here's to a great zombie forum :)

Thanks buz...we try to keep it friendly here. We don't mind specific threads, so long as they stay specific threads. Such as "Cholo and Kaufman"...once it's starts wandering around and people can't stay on the topic, it'll probably get closed or merged with the Land thread. Just keeping the place neat and tidy. :)

No matter what forum you go to you get scolded for not using the search function so it's always good to check. Then again for people who just post anyway are letting other people scold them then do the search for them anyway.

I'm gulity of this as a 'newbie' but have to say, I try scanning a few pages first to see when anything was last posted and to avoid repeating a thread.
I generally find the search thing does come up with far too many matches (this applies to other forums too).
But I'll give it a go before I jump straight in in future!

True and I wholeheartedly agree. You have to use a bit of judgement though. just because a thread sounds like a repeat doesn't exactly mean that it is. Since I've logged on I have seen a few repeat threads, but some of them differed in thier angles. Example. Will there be a Zombie outbreak? Author one in thier description may be saying "does anyone actually believe there will be one, (loonies)." while author 2 may mean "will there actually be one and how will it happen, (I believe)!" So you have to give the post a bit of time to see how the members will respond and judge whether or not they understand the authors point.
I posted one that falls along these lines(not trying to defend my post, just pointing out my reasons for posting it). I started the Thread Zombie proofing your home. This can be viewed as a re-posting of Your ideal safehouse. In fact it isn't and I was aware of the thread when writing mine.
In the safehouse thread I understood it to ask what your IDEAL safehouse would be i.e. if you think the Tower of London is perfect for you list it. My point is to get the members to think realistically. Barring doors and installing rolling shutters on your house is along these lines.
So you see you have to look at what the author of the thread is asking before taking action.
I agree though that if they repost one yank it!

I see what you mean... I've noticed as well in some threads that people say "Hey... this is taken from 'Such-a-book'" or "This has been done before in Such-a-film"...
I mean, surely any type of zombie-related thing might be seen to have 'borrowed' material from a predecessor.
I look at things like this... I'm VERY much into Laughter Therapy and humour in general (I set up a website on the former, with proper research etc. etc.) but, where humour is concerned, a lot of it is recycled... no one really 'owns' the majority of jokes out there... they're found, borrowed, tweaked etc. etc.
SO I reckon the same would go for a lot of threads.
I'm ranting now... I think I'd best stop typing before my head explodes... hope any of that made sense!

Hmmm......I know I've been here too long, when....
* I see newbies repeat threads that I have already done? (its all good, buts its starting to get cluttered?)
* I don't think any one bothers with the search option?....would get more use if you renamed that button "FREE PORN?"
* There coming out of the wood work right now?....just see how many Undead Survival thread posts there are?....I'm also guilty of being a 'gun nutter!'
* And the number 1 sign that I have been here too long....
Spooky old cemetary I found today, thread keeps coming back from the dead?......was one of the first threads I posted in. :)

I would suggest that the very best thing to do is for the board administrator to enable message pruning. Let's face it: topics go stale, and certain subjects are likely to come up repeatedly. It's one thing if four people within days of each other decide to post on X, but if there's something languishing in the depths of Posting Limbo... well, I don't blame anyone for wanting a fresh start. Automatic pruning of stuff that's three, six or twelve months old would render this a non-issue.

Of course it's a good idea. I like to have all my ducks in a row an all that. Now if a post goes off and the good ones do. People can fix it right back on topic again, its not that hard to do. Simply state, "and now back to the topic," at hand or what have you. Now sometimes this doesn't work but sometimes it does.

I noticed recently that there appear to be a lot of new people with no idea how forums work, so here's a few tips:
1. It's not a chat site, there's no need to type as fast as possible so you can get the first post or reply to someone.
2. With number one in mind, there is no harm in opening up a word processing program and copying your post in to it to check for spelling and grammar mistakes. It will make people like you more as your posts will be easier to read and make you look less like a 6 year old.
3. I'm sure we all know by now that personal attacks on others' are absolutely pointless. There's a joke about arguing on the internet and the special Olympics and no matter how offensive it is, it's half right.
4. Learn to respect people's opinions, they might not be to your liking but everyone is different. If two people have conflicting opinions they might both be right but in different ways. Read and think before you revert to personal attacks and go getting yourself banned.
5. Most of all respect the moderators. They are here for the same reason as everyone else, to have a laugh and talk about the things they like with people of similar interests. They hold the proverbial stick of banishment so I'd be nice to them. Although if you have any complaints be sensible and talk to them reasonably, don't go in all gun's blazing hurling insults at any chance possible as it will get you nowhere and any favor that you had with them before will be lost instantly.
I think five should be enough tips for now. Just use common sense and have fun, there is no point in finding this wondrous place just to go and trash it for yourself just because someone said something that you don't agree with, the Ignore button is there for a reason.
*Spellchecked with OpenOffice.
Edit: Don't forget about the http://www.allthingszombie.com/forums/images/buttons/edit.gif button. If you have posted something but then wish to add/change/delete it then PLEASE don't just post another comment about the one you just posted. It is really annoying trying to trawl through three or four posts just to find out what you meant to say in the first place. Just click on that http://www.allthingszombie.com/forums/images/buttons/edit.gif button and change your original post.
